M1 passes 26%, 8 core CPUs reach 30% of Macs using Steam in 10 months, and a rough estimate of numbers.

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 03:31 AM PDT

Valve posts monthly Steam hardware and software surveys, which serve to give an overview of computer specs.

While mostly accurate, it hasn't been updated to pick up the M1, reading it as an Intel 2.5 GHz 8 core processor with an unknown GPU, which gets reported as an AMD Radeon HD 8800 Series (which was never offered by Apple in any Mac).

Beginning in November, these specs began to rise at an impressive rate, and as a result, in the latest survey, September, the M1/AMD Radeon HD 8800 Series is now at 26.29% of Mac GPUs, and 8 core CPUs are now at 30.63%. While not as dramatic, 2.3 to 2.69 GHz CPUs have reached 49.06%.

For context, in October last year, the 8800 Series was at 0.36%, 8 core CPUs made up 4.61%, and 2.3 to 2.69 GHz CPUs were at 30.35%.

While Macs are still a minority of Steam users, these increases are, to put it mildly, impressive, and certainly point at hundreds of thousands of M1's on Steam, with an estimated total userbase of 0.649%.

For context, the Mac's share is 2.47%, and the combined M1/8800 has 0.77%.

So, my guess is that the M1 has between 519,200 and 649,000 users out of the 1,976,000 to 2,470,000 Mac users on Steam, going off a total of 80 to 100 million monthly users.

Cellular Apple Watch Support on Google Fi Incoming?

    Posted: 06 Oct 2021 06:01 PM PDT

Take this with a grain of salt, but I connected with Google Fi support today, and asked if there are plans to expand service to support cellular Apple Watches, and received the following reply:

Yes, Google Fi's team is planning to do it very soon, but the exact date for watch activation has not been released.

I'm personally excited for this feature to come to Fi.

The team is planning for it!

    🤞🏽
