Leaving windows and moving to M1 Macbook

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:28 AM PDT

Finally ditched my windows laptop and moving to M1 MBA. First time macos user here. I have used linux ubuntu and love it more than windows other than the fact that it doesn't have some apps like adobe suit etc.

Please suggest me some of the cool apps/utilities that I should try. I have been seeing Alfred for a very long time and that I first thing I am going to install.

Please suggest me some macos alternative to these.

    1. On windows I used to use POT player. It is a robust media player with nice UI (unlike VLC). Don't know if its available for mac or not. Please suggest me the some good media players other than VLC. +1 if it has a nice UI. I just use speed control shortcuts and captions. Thats it!

    2. I used to use Lightshot on windows. It takes screenshot and copy to clipboard later can paste in any app like skype, messenger etc. Can also save screenshot to custom local directory or on web and get a direct share link. Please suggest me some similar app for macos.

    3. 7zip - archive manager that support .zip, .rar and .7zip files.

    4. Is there any app to remove background from images like clippingmagic.com/ I am looking for an offline app. I know I can also do it on adobe PS but don't want to install big PS for just removing background. I heard pixelmator is a good PS alternative and its light weight. Idk if background removal is possible in pixelmator.

    5. CCleaner/Galary utilities to remove junk and clean up system

Some of the other apps that I am excited about.

    • Bartender - Cleans cluttered macos topbar

    • Rectangle - Hearing about this a lot

    • Dropover

    • Amphetamine

    Thanks! Excited about Mac.

Anyone have a good workflow for syncing photos between all Apple devices *without* iCloud?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:46 AM PDT

I have three Apple devices. An iPhone, a Macbook Pro and an iPad Pro. I'm trying to find a way to use the MacOS Photos app to sync photos between all three devices.

Few reasons why I want to do this:

    1. My home internet connection is very shitty
    2. I have a large NAS (network attached storage) and have found a way to store all MacOS Photos images on it, thus saving valuable MacOS disk space
    3. I don't like iCloud as a service very much and don't want to pay for it (not because of recent privacy debate but for many other reasons)
    4. Cloud storage is not a backup, and keeping all photos on the NAS instead makes them easier to archive

I've been experimenting with this and it seems to me like the best way to do it is to sync all photos into MacOS, then use Smart Albums to help me categorize photos into regular albums, then sync those albums back to my other devices.

The issue is that when syncing photos from Mac to iOS, the albums aren't saved. They all go into an "imported" album on iOS. So: Do any of you have a workflow for syncing all images and albums between Apple devices without iCloud, and if so, how do you do it?

Is the keyboard navigation within prompt boxes gone from Big Sur?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 01:18 AM PDT

I currently have two laptops, one is still on Catalina, while the other is updated to Big Sur.

On Catalina, when a prompt pops up that has a confirmation and cancelation button (in my case that's VS Code when closing an unsaved document), the Enter is focused on confirmation, and Space on cancelation, so I can do either option without resorting to the mouse.

But on Big Sur it seems that Enter is for confirmation, while the Space doesn't perform any action (unless in cases where the dialog also had a text box, in which case the text box is focused and it acts as a space for text input..).

Navigating with arrows also doesn't seem to exist, so there is no switching focus from the confirmation to the cancel button.

    Are there alternative keyboard shortcuts?

I'll be switching to Mac today - my laptop is old and buying a Macbook is cheaper than buying a premium Windows laptop in Brazil. I'm freaking out a little bit and need to help regarding some features that I use daily and I'm not sure if they are available on MacOs. Can anyone help me?

I'll be switching to Mac today - my laptop is old and buying a Macbook is cheaper than buying a premium Windows laptop in Brazil. I'm freaking out a little bit and need to help regarding some features that I use daily and I'm not sure if they are available on MacOs. Can anyone help me?

Question 1: So, first, do we have the option to have the view of the open windows of an app if we hover over it on the dock? (image)

Question 2: How can I organize my apps on the screen automatically without ever needing to go full screen. I once used a mac and when I clicked the button that should make the app full screen, it made it 100% full screen and it took me a while to find out how to get out of it. (image)

Question 3: Can I install PWA apps as easily as on Windows? Basically, I just need to click Install this page as an App on Edge and then it opens the website as an application. (Most of my apps are PWA currently, so it's essential that it works well).

Question 4: Is OneNote for Mac as reliable as OneNote for Windows?

Question 5: How can I make Alt+Tab be as reliable/precise as it is on Windows? I've never used it on any mac, but I've seen people saying it just shows the app's icons and you're not able to navigate through your browser's tabs or if you have multiple instances of the same app opened, it only shows one of them.

Question 6: How can I organize my most important apps but not have them on the dock? Like a start menu? Is there something like this available for mac? Can I have maybe a folder on the dock where I can put my most important apps? Will they appear on the dock if I open them? I like my bar/dock to not have all the apps I use. Using search all the time is also not optimal.

Question 7: Is there an alternative for Notepads + +?

Question 8: Is there a "Your Phone" type of service where I can see all of my SMS, pictures, open my phone apps on the computer, share my phone screen to the computer, get all of my phone notifications on the laptop, answer my phone calls, etc? I use a Galaxy Note 20.

Question 9: Is the calculator app as powerful as it is on Windows meaning I can use multiple types of calculators-mode such as scientific, programming, days and months count, area calculator, coin conversion, graph creation, Energy (joules to calories, etc), Eua metrics to international metrics, etc? If not, then is there one single app that is as complete? (image)

Question 10: Is there anything similar to Quick Access on Finder? This shows my most recent interacted files when you first open File Explorer.

Question 11: Can anyone explain to me about the minimize issue that I've seen around while researching? Something about when an app is minimized, it doesn't appear on alt+tab or something like this. How can an app be minimized then?

I think those are my initial questions. Please, let me know what you guys think! Can't wait to read all the answers.

Does a TEXT ONLY editor exist for MacOS?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 07:37 AM PDT

Text edit has a nasty habit of using "rich text" when copy/pasting from other sources. I have no use for such stuff so, my question is, does a text only editor even exist for MacOS?

Everything is so wrapped up in font this and embedded pictures that... I go to vi for now but wondering does a proper notepad.exe equivalent exists for Macs.

How is Big Sur on a 2015 MBP Retina display?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 01:28 PM PDT

Hey guys! Just wondering how smooth the Big sur update works for older macs. I heard about a lot of issues when it first came out, but is that still the case right now? Would it make the laptop slower? Would really appreciate some input :)

    Thanks so much!

Can new iMac shipped with Big Sur/APFS dual boot with legacy OS?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 03:52 AM PDT

My 2011 iMac running 10.13 finally died of stripy graphics card and I bought a new machine. If it came installed with Big Sur/APFS, will it accept an older OS on a volume or partition? Want to install Adobe CS5 for Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign (was still running OK on 10.13) and thought 10.9 Mavericks as a compromise? HELP, haven't made a dual boot since Classic 9/OSX and really need to get this software working…

Safari - searching for an exact phrase or word

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:57 AM PDT

    Hi!

Is there a way to search for the exact phrase or word in safari on Mac? I know that you can choose whether it contains or starts with the word or phrase, but since it can still find tons of other non-relevant words it doesn't help.

I tried putting it inside question marks as when you search within the application preview, " ", but doesn't help. Any ideas? :-)

    Anyone have a Mavericks image?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:21 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

Me and some of the other IT guys are playing around with our Mac Pro 6,1 (trashcan) but we can't seem to roll them back to mavericks, only goes as far as High Sierra. Does anyone have a mavericks image that we can use? We tried to download one from archive.org but the speeds are so slow that we gave up.

Does the dock just appear really late now after boot in Big Sur?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 10:14 AM PDT

So I finally upgraded to Big Sur yesterday and am really enjoying it. One thing I noticed that's different from Mojave (where I'm coming from) is that after (re)booting my Mac my dock appears very last, after all my apps have reopened, and about thirty seconds or so after macOS has otherwise completely finished booting.

Has this been a typical experience for anyone else? Did something change in Big Sur and this is normal now? It doesn't really bother me that much but I found it odd since I would expect my dock to load as part of the core OS/Finder experience before my apps reappear. I don't think it would be a memory issue as I'm running a 2018 MBP 15" with an i9 and 32GB of RAM.

Can files from a Time Machine backup be accessed via another Macbook?

    Posted: 15 Aug 2021 08:19 AM PDT

My wife is upgrading her 2015 MBP to the new Air and she said she moved all her docs over via flash drive. I made sure she did a Time Machine backup to an external drive. I'll be taking her old Macbook for myself, but before I restore it I just want to make sure if she forgot to copy something over it would be accessible through the Time Machine backup via her new Macbook. Is that possible? I don't have it all in front of me to try. I'm used to Windows so I'm not sure how this all works.
