macOS Black stripe on screen

Tomorrow my new MacBook Air M1 512gb will get shipped with Amazon 🎉 It's my first macOS computer, after 22 years and counting of windows (and some unix for working and my own stuff). I still have my desktop PC and work notebook, but I wanted to get a Mac because I use the iPhone since 3GS (now 12Pro), I have the last iPad mini, and Watch5.

I will use the MacBook at night for browsing, some office stuff, YouTube videos… pretty simple stuff for now.

So I'm asking for some YouTube videos which explain the macOS, the difference with Windows, some simple shortcuts (eg the WIN+D go to desktop), I will use a mouse (Mx3), I'm not a touchpad guy :D the best apps to install… and whatever I need to start with Mac :D

Any native Softphone app for Big Sur M1?

Do you happen to know of any SIP softphone app that runs natively on m1 (and it's not Zoiper for iPhone/iPad) ? There's the likes of Bria and Linphone but they are x86, Intel. I've searched the web but no luck yet and I need it for my work.

A few years ago I used a trial of one cool application, unfortunately it's hard for me to get its name in the depths of my notes or other wonders where everything is written.

The assumptions were that we gave her permission to integrate with Safari, Brave whatever you like and she was able to search all the pages we looked at for specific keywords. If someone knew the name of this miracle, I would be grateful : )

Hide Application from Dock Whilst Active

I would like to remove Minecraft from my dock whilst it is active or at least remove the dot that states that it is active. I understand I might need to change something in the Info.plist file in the game's folder but when I run the following command or change it manually in the file with TextEdit, the icon still appears every time I run the application.

The command I used was: /usr/libexec/PlistBuddy -c 'Add :LSUIElement bool true'/Users/bencawson/Library/Application\ Support/minecraft/runtime/java-runtime-alpha/mac-os/java-runtime-alpha/jre.bundle/Contents/Info.plist

Why doesn't my system update? I'm running 10.15 beta and it won't update to the latest verison of 10.15.

I'm on the Beta version of Catalina 10.15 and when I do the "about this mac" software update, it says it's updated, but yet it's still the beta version of Catalina. 10.15 Beta (19A582a)

Looks like the latest Catalina is 10.15.7 or something like that. It's been out of beta for a while now.

Migrating from 2015 MacBook Pro to VM

Status

Hi folks. I own a high-end 2015 MBP and I'd like to migrate to a Windows+Ubuntu-based Laptop in the future. The machines are just getting to niche for me and I don't want to be locked in. I'm running Mojave.

Goal

However, I'd like to ...

keep using MoneyMoney.
have Pages and Keynote at hand, as many of my old Presentations and CVs are in that format.

Also, ...

Up to now, i use iTunes for underwater audio's water-proof ipod shuffle.
I use Photos to house my private photos.

My plan was to repair & sell the macbook pro after setting up a replacement system. Ideally, this would be a VM on Windows or Linux which can run these MoneyMoney, Pages and Keynote indefinitely and can itself be easily migrated.

For iTunes and Photos I am undecided whether I want to keep them in the VM or whether I migrate to an alternative software.

I have no hard requirements concerning runtime performance, smoothness, etc.

Question

My questions to you guys are pretty open-ended:

What pitfalls do you see ahead? Hardware or software limitations?
Do you have alternative suggestions?

How To Disable Browser Caches On M1 Mac? Chrome writes a lot of data on to my SSD when watching Youtube 4K videos.

I watch a lot of 4k video on youtube via google chrome, and just noticed that chrome writes A LOT of data to my M1 SSD disc. I previously disabled the chrome cache to disc by turning off the "Turn off caching of streaming media to disk" via by entering the setting via this command: chrome://flags/#turn-off-streaming-media-caching-always and that worked fine for a few months.

The only problem now is that the latest version of chrome doesnt have this feature anymore, so im not able to disable it again. And tyhats probably why chrome helper have been writing a lof of data on my SSD again (500-900gb / day).

Does anyone know any other way to disable the chrome browser caching on m1?

Slow Touch Bar Response and stuttering/popping audio when using Touch Bar Controls on M1 MacBook Pro

Hi all,

I've noticed that when using the Touch Bar controls on my M1 MacBook Pro (16 GB, 512 GB SSD), there is considerable delay between me pressing the control and the action being executed. Also, if I am playing audio or video when using the Touch Bar, the audio stutters and pops too. (See video to hear crackling/lag--you can also see the delay between me pressing the Touch Bar and the brightness changing)

The audio crackling/delay also happens when I use any headphones inline volume controls, but it doesn't happen when I adjust the volume/brightness from the Menu Bar or Control Center. I don't have any anti-virus/"Clean My Mac"-type applications installed, either. I'm wondering if it's a power management issue?

I've only had the laptop for about 3 weeks, and it's happened at least once a week since updating to Big Sur 11.5. Force Quitting Touch Bar in Activity Monitor or Terminal doesn't do anything, but restarting the computer makes the problem go away. Eventually it does come back and the issue persists again.

It seems like others have the same issue, too.

Has anyone run into this issue before? Or at least have some insight as to what's making this happen?

What is the point of Quick Notes when Stickies already existed?

Also it's really annoying trying to click things in the bottom right corner of the screen and accidentally opening a new note. This is the same kind of conversation as saying "What's the point of Siri Shortcuts for macOS when Automator already existed" but I'm not complaining about that because Siri Shortcuts is SO MUCH easier to use than Automator. Did they just add Quick Notes to macOS because it was a new feature on iPad and they wanted Mac users to also have it?

I'm trying to use my Nintendo Switch online but this beach house wifi has a internet password page and won't allow it to connect, so I need to make an Ad Hoc on my Macbook and connect it to that network to use the internet. How do I do this?

Two taps to wake — good

Just to confirm:

Waking a Mac (Mini M1 in my case) from 11.5.1 by touching keyboard, now takes two taps. Which, I like as, one tap meant an awful lot of accidental wake ups.

I don't use screen saver (waste of money and energy) but from sleep to log on entry for locked screen.

My keyboard is full Mac USB A1234 from a few years ago but, I think I noticed this with latest small BT Mac keyboard initially too (now on other computer).

Disk space analyzer says 40GB inaccessible on my drive, How can I get rid of it?

I have an old 240G SSD that was used for a very old version of macOS. I want to use it for a backup drive, but it has 40G of space I can't get access to and it had a 10G library in addition to that. I have 60G used for files right now and I want to keep them there.

Q. How can I reclaim this space without formatting the SSD?

I've been able to reclaim the space on other drives by formatting them, but I don't have 70G free space to move these other files to, so I'm stuck unless I can just find a way to recover that space. It's 50G total space that macOS put on there that I can't get to.

I would love to run Pixelmator Pro but it needs Metal-support. Is there anyway to bypass that support requirement – or does it actually need that.

I don't know if this is the correct group but I have mid-2011 iMac 21.5 running High Sierra along with original GPU. I am not familiar with the term Metal support. Can someone explain? Thanks!
