Daily Megathread - On-Device CSAM Scanning

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Hi r/Apple, welcome to today's megathread to discuss Apple's new CSAM on-device scanning.

As a reminder, here are the current ground rules:

We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being (at 9 AM ET) to centralize some of the discussion on this issue. This was decided by a sub-wide poll, results here.

We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis. Old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread.

The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-quality discussion posts in the main feed, but we will try to keep this to a minimum.

Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Thank you!

For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here.

Apple store staff gave my repaired MacBook Pro to complete stranger and didn’t check ID. Has anyone had this happen to them before?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 12:16 PM PDT

Received an email my repaired MacBook Pro was ready to be picked up within 7 days, so planned to go in and pick up the next day. But that evening 15 minutes before the store closed I received an email and notification that my Mac had been picked up by. Turns out after me questioning constantly they gave it out to a complete stranger, didn't do any ID checks. Is this a common thing for Apple? I am very disappointed and quite frankly not sure I ever want to get anything repaired in this store again.

UPDATE: I'll give a bigger update soon but I just wanted to say thank you for all your advice and comments, I am reading all your thoughts and taking onboard everything you are saying, I'm finding it really helpful as I've been honestly so upset and stressed with whats happened. Thank you!

Working pre-image collission attack for iPhone hash algorithm. Which means: Anyone malicious can send you a bunch of legal images, and apple thinks it's childporn and will report you.

Why is the iOS Home Screen still locked down so much?

    Posted: 17 Aug 2021 09:10 PM PDT

I downloaded the iPadOS 15 beta today after daily driving the iOS 15 beta on my phone since the release of the public beta. Excited to set out the new widgets, I came to a realisation - it would be impossible to get it looking exactly as I wanted, because of the inability to freely place apps and widgets. You know, how there can't be any gaps between them. I ended up having to use more widgets than I would've liked just to stop everything from being bunched up in the corner, and even then things don't look perfect because whenever you move one thing, everything else jumps about.

This just feels like an incredibly arbitrary and annoying limitation. With everything Apple's done for the Home Screen in the past two versions, you'd think you'd be allowed the freedom to personalise your device how you like. People who prefer having their icons the classic way can still do that easily.
