Daily Megathread - On-Device CSAM Scanning

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Hi r/Apple, welcome to today's megathread to discuss Apple's new CSAM on-device scanning.

As a reminder, here are the current ground rules:

We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being (at 9 AM ET) to centralize some of the discussion on this issue. This was decided by a sub-wide poll, results here.

We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis. Old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread.

The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-quality discussion posts in the main feed, but we will try to keep this to a minimum.

Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Thank you!

For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here.

Great video explaining how Apple’s NeuralHash CSAM Detection works, how to evade it and how a potential flaw can let Apple and others misuse it.

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 12:37 PM PDT

This is a great video that explains how the NeuralHash CSAM Detection works:

This time-mark explains a potential flaw on how Apple can access all encrypted photos (even non-CSAM):

It's interesting since Apple's CSAM security outline says: "..In summary, for non-matches, the image information in the vouchers remains doubly encrypted because the outer layer cannot be decrypted.."

It's also interesting since several (including Apple?) have claimed that on-device scanning is safer and more private since Apple can't see the encrypted pictures unless they are CSAM. This "flaw" puts this claim into question.

Keep in mind, today's iCloud photos are not E2EE. This is only interesting due to the claims and the CSAM Security outline!

What do you think about this "flaw"?

It looks like Apple over-engineered something that looks like the data is secured, but in the end this flaw(?) make it accessible.

It's also quite interesting on his take about how easy it could be to evade or create false positives.

    Mobile Apps on M1 Macbooks

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 08:57 AM PDT

After having one for so long and looking into these issues that apps have had. Does anyone else think this has become a wasted feature since it seems like developers have not done much to support it or if I remember correctly they had it removed it from the mac app store. Ive had graphical glitches on a few that are available but make it unusable.

So basically has anyone found it useful or not?

In defense of old Ipads (9.3.5/9.3.6)

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 10:24 AM PDT

I received an old iPad 2 from my aunt, she said that it was useless, since it comes with IOS 9.3.5, from 2016, and basically you can not download any application from the Appstore anymore. It was harder for me because I dont have previously purchased applications (I just created this ID and it is my only Apple product) so I had a beautiful paperweight without support for anything and without the ability to download applications, not even old versions.

Later I discovered that you can install an old version of Itunes compatible with PC that allows you to download the applications with your Apple ID, and when they are already purchased, you can download them directly to your ipad, and even if it is the last compatible version (old) it is already a huge progress.

After that, I decided to find the best possible use for this new device, testing with every application I could think of. Do not forget that it is an ipad 2 (over 10 years old) and it runs ios 9.3.5 (2016).

Within the applications that work, I could have calls with Meet, Zoom, install Gmail, Facebook, Spotify, Netflix, Google Maps, Google Documents and Telegram. I was really surprised that even though they are old and outdated versions, they still all work perfectly, being able to enter the servers and use them without any inconvenience.

After downloading applications that serve me for productivity, because I am a math teacher, I downloaded a scientific calculator and Geogebra, also download google chrome to have YouTube support (the native app does not work), download Garageband to test instruments, VLC to see movies and Duolingo to learn languages.

And finally, some games for the free time, I give the entire list in case any of them interested you and for the record:

Brain dots, Jetpack joyride, Doodle jump, Plants vs zombies 1 and 2, Dead Trigger, Piano Tiles 1 y 2, Roblox, Geometry dash, Fruit ninja, Flow Free, Candy crush Saga and Soda, Cut the rope, Fallout Shelter, Time locker, Little alchemy 1 and 2, Miniom Rush, Shantae, Infinite loop, Minesweeper, PewPew, Akinator, Crossy road, Aca Attorney, Godus, Trials Xtreme 4, Shooty Skies, Commute, Slither.io, Just Dance Now and Polytopia.

All of these games have been tried on my ipad 2 and work perfectly.

I was surprised by the use that I was able to give to this apparently obsolete device, which according to the internet its best use was as a cookbook and they say it felt so slow that it was unusable. it still has a lot of life left in 2021, and with all these applications I use it in my spare time to watch movies and games, I use it to practice drums and learn languages, I use it for university video calls, to read pdfs, to enter the social media. And in short, it still has a lot of life left, and never let someone tell you how useful/useless a device can be, because you would be surprised at the use that something so apparently old can have.

And with this I do not mean to say that the new alternatives do not do all this faster and better, but if it is what you have at your fingertips, do not give up. You can always do more, and Jailbreak opens up more possibilities that I have not yet had the time or the courage to explore.

Greetings to all lovers of your ipads!

PSA: iCloud family sharing works with accounts abroad

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 04:31 AM PDT

Just tried this last week and was able to share my Apple One storage and TV+, Music subscriptions to family in a different country and continent.

Unsure if culprit is iOS 15 beta or Apple One, but before I had 2TB and was only able to share with family whose accounts were in same country as mine.

Apple Pencil + iPad Pro + Sidecar = Wacom for Macbook Pro?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 03:12 PM PDT

Has pressure-sensitivty/latency of apple pencil input to a macbook pro via a sidecar-red ipad improved a lot since launch? I haven't seen a recent review of the raw performance, pressure sensitivity, latency, points-per-second kind thing of using Sidecar to turn an iPad Pro into a wacom-style drawing tablet.

I've seen small indications that perhaps it was poor at launch but has improved dramatically by 2021?

    Apple Website Language Change

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 08:59 AM PDT

What is the reason for Apple not providing alternate language options on their website?

I live in a non-English speaking country, and have to rely on Google Translate to automatically convert the text on the Apple Website to English, which can often be buggy and inaccurate.

I'm surprised a company the size of Apple's, and with their diverse consumer base, do not have a language option.

    Thoughts?

Edit: I'm talking about the language of the site, not the region. I'm not able to buy from the US region site if I live overseas.

Would you be willing to upgrade your M1 MBA or MBP for a M1X 14" version?

    Posted: 16 Aug 2021 04:58 PM PDT

Just curious as to how many, if any, that bought a M1 MBP or MBA would be willing to get "upgrade" if Apple releases a 14" M1X version and what features would convince you to take the leap.
