Daily Megathread - On-Device CSAM Scanning

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 06:00 AM PDT

Hi r/Apple, welcome to today's megathread to discuss Apple's new CSAM on-device scanning.

As a reminder, here are the current ground rules:

We will be posting daily megathreads for the time being (at 9 AM EST) to centralize some of the discussion on this issue. This was decided by a sub-wide poll, results here.

We will still be allowing news links in the main feed that provide new information or analysis. Old news links, or those that re-hash known information, will be directed to the megathread.

The mod team will also, on a case by case basis, approve high-quality discussion posts in the main feed, but we will try to keep this to a minimum.

Please continue to be respectful to each other in your discussions. Thank you!

For more information about this issue, please see Apple's FAQ as well as an analysis by the EFF. A detailed technical analysis can be found here.

“Privacy Preserving Ad Measurement” rolled out in iOS 14.5 actually ops you IN to ad tracking.

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:10 AM PDT

iOS 14.5 update quietly enabled a new feature with the very specific wording "Privacy Protecting Ad Measurement" and opted all users into it. Sounds like something you'd want, right? You want your privacy protected!

The only thing is….it does the opposite. It ops you in to add tracking you didn't used to have.

If you turn it to OFF it opts you out of ALL tracking. Like it used to be.

    Sneaky.

And I don't think the wording of this feature was designed to really enlighten the user and help us make a choice to protect our privacy. Not to mention making the default be an opt IN to new ad tracking?

    Shame.

Update: it is now in Safari in MacOS Monteray Beta as well. For iOS users it is under Settings > Safari > Privacy if you click on "learn more", Apple actually describes every option EXCEPT this one. Intentional radio silence is pretty telling.

Wireless charging is absolutely destroying my battery health

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 05:19 AM PDT

I've had my iPhone 12 pro max for under a year now and my battery health is already at 94%. I noticed that I've been doing wireless charging pretty much exclusively and it's been absolutely killing my battery health. Has anyone else experienced this?

I'm using official apple products too.

Edit: just got off Apple support, they say MagSafe charging will use battery health faster and it's a known issue….

If you want my advice, stay away from wireless charging. It will kill your battery in half the time.

Anyone reconsidering HKSV in light of Apple's recent U-Turn on privacy?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 07:20 PM PDT

I've always been absolutely against the idea of having web connected cameras inside the house but got a couple after Apple introduced HKSV because I trusted Apple's security. (Their Privacy™ marketing worked. More fool me)

After the recent debacle with Eufy cameras, I felt very smug about not letting my cameras touch any service/servers besides Apple's.

After Apple's recent announcement of client side scanning of private data for CP and the way they quietly turned ON ad tracking by default in Safari in iOS and MacOS updates, I don't trust them to do something similar with HKSV feeds.

I'll keep the camera that monitors my front door but the ones inside my house are going cheap.

    Thoughts?

How to force Apple TV 4K to work in 4K mode with 1080p TV (result: better image quality)

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 03:47 AM PDT

By default, Apple TV 4K works in 1080p mode, when connected to 1080p TV.

There is a way to force Apple TV 4K to work in 4K mode:

Go to Settings app > Video and Audio > Format > Other Formats > select 1600x1200 SDR.

Using 1200p vertical resolution (or any other which is larger than 1920x1080 on any side), forces Apple TV to work in 4K mode, which means:

    - it fully operates in 4K

    - uses 4K assets, icons, images, etc

    - downloads 4K videos

    - color profile seems to be different

Only at the end the image is scaled back to 1080p, everything looks smoother and sharper.

I've tested it on Apple TV 4K (tvOS 14.4) and Apple TV 4K HDR (tvOS 15b5), connected to Samsung UE22.

Post your results, whether it worked or not, if your 1080p TV has 1200p option.

Price Predictions for Supposedly Upcoming 14" and 16" Macbook Pros

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:25 PM PDT

Hi everyone. Like some (maybe most?) of you, I'm also waiting for [supposedly] upcoming 14" and 16" M1X MacBook Pros. According to rumors and leaks, they will be very powerful laptops. Hence, the supposed performance gains compared to current M1 MacBooks easily convince me to wait for M1X.

Apart from the performance of course price is in the equation. I've used 2015 MacBook Pro and some hackintosh builds lately so I'm not an expert on Apple's pricing policy.

So, considering current prices and Apple pricing, what do you think expected prices would be for base models?

How’s the Patina on your iPhone 12 leather case? (Mine’s nonexistent, used it since launch)

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 02:48 AM PDT

It seems like Apple did something different with their leather cases this year, because I'm getting virtually no patina after daily usage for over a year. Only on the edges, but it doesn't look like a patina - it just looks like the color rubbed off.

Here's a pic showing my saddle brown 12 pro case vs my iPhone 7 saddle brown case (comparable usage times): https://imgur.com/a/kVyfMNX

Anyone else having a similar experience?

Who do people continue to hate on the Touch Bar?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2021 12:46 PM PDT

All I've heard of all these tech related YouTubers, from the tolerable and well liked to the annoying and unbearably cringy, is that they hate the thing and never once take any time to properly elaborate on that. I think the only one that really did that was Brian Tong and even then i would argue that the reasonings is not good enough to warrant such dislikes towards it. Heck, at least with the Butterfly Keyboard they actually give some reasons as to why a lot of them weren't fans of it.

So whoever comes across this post, I really gotta ask you, as someone who's never owned a Mac, yet thought that the Touch Bar is an intriguing part of the current MacBook Pros… What do you guys think of it? Especially those of you that have a MacBook Pro.
