PSA: iPhone batteries are only rated by Apple to stay above 80% health in the first 500 cycles

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:55 AM PDT

Hi everyone, I've seen a lot of questions online lately from people about their iPhone's battery health and whether their batteries are wearing unusually fast. iPhone 12 owners are asking things like "I've only had my phone for 10 months and battery health is already down to 90%, is that normal or do I have a defective battery?"

Apple has two main support pages about this listed here:

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208387

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT208387

Specifically, unlike Mac, iPad, and Apple Watch batteries that are rated to 1000 cycles, the iPhone's battery is "designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions."

That means that if wear happens relatively linearly, you should expect to be down to 90% health after 250 cycles. Assuming you cycle your battery about once a day, then a brand new iPhone 12 bought at launch should, according to Apple's typical expectations, be worn down ~10% already, as it has been 277 days since iPhone 12's launch day.

Of course, it is frustrating that because of this, your phone has an expected 1.5 year lifespan before possibly needing a battery service on a battery that is not easily replaced.

The batteries can wear more quickly due to more frequent charge cycles, and especially due to heat. They also wear more rapidly when they're more frequently pushed to 100% charge. So some suggestions for prolonging battery life include:

    - Avoid wireless charging as it does generate additional heat (this does go against using MagSafe, but it could over time save you a few health percentage points).

    - Try to avoid getting your phone too hot with regular use.

    - Use the features that prevent charging past 80% until the morning, and also always try to keep your battery level above 20%.

But ultimately the point is, I think we're used to built in batteries having a longer cycle rating than modern iPhones seem to have. It's unfortunate, and I don't know why the iPhone batteries rate worse than other products, but the answer to the question of "is 90% expected at this time" appears, from Apple's perspective, to be yes.

Texting needs a “Mark as unread” function.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 11:37 AM PDT

I apologize if this has been covered adequately, although I don't remember seeing it. I frequently use the "Mark as unread" function in email to help me to remember to address issues raised in an email.

I would love the ability to do the same in a text. I frequently get texts I can't immediately address, but which are important. Once read, I would love to "Mark as unread" so I make sure I don't miss responding properly, etc.

    Maps needs a pause function.

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 09:34 AM PDT

If you're going on a long trip, you will probably want to stop along the way for food, bathroom, etc. as it is though, Maps will keep trying to prompt you back onto the route unless you end it and then re-search when you're done. This could be fixed by adding a "pause guidance" button to Maps.

I made a spreadsheet of free Mac Apps I use — check it out and recommend more!

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 06:12 AM PDT

So I realised I was telling lots of people to download different apps, and hadn't seen that anyone had come up with a good list of free apps people should download

I have linked it as a Google Sheet here:

Anyone actually seen a “speed trap” reported in Apple Maps for police sitting in a car alongside the road?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 02:45 PM PDT

Just curious. I tested this on an almost 600 mile road trip from Detroit to Cleveland and back this past weekend. I had Apple Maps iOS 14.5+ going in the foreground, and Waze in the background. Over the course of the trip, Waze warned of about 10-12 different police cars coming up within the next 1/2 mile on the side of the road, checking speeds. Not a single one showed as a warning in that area on Apple Maps. I know people have to submit the reports in order for Apple Maps to know they are there ahead of time.

But, my question is, are people not reporting police cars parked and checking speeds on Apple Maps, or are they reporting them and Apple is not displaying the markings for some reason? Even when I submit them myself, it say REPORT SUBMITTED by nothing shows on the map, like it does instantly with Waze.

Some reports have implied that there needs to be "a number of submissions" for Apple to display a hazard or speed trap, but I've never seen that officially listed anywhere, and what is "a number"? What the point of allowing submissions if by the time Apple gets enough "confirmed submissions" the police car has already nailed someone and moved to a different spot?

I can honestly say I've never seen a "speed trap" submission in Apple Maps since iOS 14.5 was released. Has anyone else honestly seen one? Is this feature even working?

Is there a reason the volume change 'popup' is still the way it has been for this long?

    Posted: 27 Jul 2021 11:56 AM PDT

The 'popup' I'm referring to is the box on Mac's that appear when changing the volume. When listening to music using an app such as Spotify and I press the 'next song' button on my keyboard, Windows machines will show the next song being played (bside the volume indicator). This is one of the few features I wish MacOS had aswell. In addition I feel like, in my opinion, this volume indicator in MacOS could use an update aswell.

Is there a reason Apple does not want to include the media title beside their volume indicator when switching media?
