For years I've swiped two fingers from the left to bring in the notification area to use the calculator. Now it's gone. For no reason. Please, Apple, just add it back in.

No more Mac App Store update count badge?

No more Mac App Store update count badge?

    Hey guys!

It seems that since 11.3(.1?) the Mac App Store icon on dock and LaunchPad does not show the update count badge (white number on red circle) anymore. It remember it did show it on previous 11.* versions.

I've tested on two Macs, one with Intel, one with M1, and I haven't changed anything in ~/Library/Preferences, etc. files myself.

Does it happen for you too?

Also, if anyone knows: is this (supposed to be) a feature? :-)

How to make a picture-in-picture video player half-transparent?

    Posted: 13 May 2021 02:17 AM PDT

I tried to find a few times some soft / tweaks for Mac OS to make picture-in-picture mode half-transparent for example when playing youtube videos in the background.

What's the sense to have this feature if it still takes some screen space?

Parallels x86 emulation on m1 macs

Will Parallels support x86 emulation on arm macs ? I know it supports arm virtualization but I couldn't find anything about x86. I thought it would be released after the technical preview but now the question are they even working on it ? VMware already confirmed they will not support it

Which screen for Big Sur working AND gaming - the scaling dilemma

    Posted: 13 May 2021 01:01 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

gonna post this everywhere I assume as it includes so many interconnected issues and questions.

So, I'm a student and gamer on the side. I use a MacBook Pro 2018 to work from home and study and I wanted a screen for that, however, I ALSO want to start gaming on PC now (been playing PS4 mainly in the past and only wow on PC). Specifically, I want to play apex legends and some wow. Now, here comes the issue: scaling on Mac (specifically, on Big Sur) is a b****. I went through a few screens already and am now using a Samsung G7 odyssey - love the screen very much, however, here comes the scaling issue on Mac: if set to 1440p, everything is sooo small. I often end up leaning towards to the screen which kinda defeats the purpose of a big screen (One reason for buying a screen in the first place was improving my posture). However, if set to 1080p scale it actually looks WORSE than it does on a 1080p screen (checked this on my housemate's screen).

Following this post, a 27" (this is the size I want - tried 32" and nah), 4K screen would be the best option. Now, for gaming I could get the LG27GN950. This would be pretty dope as it also has 144Hz, so arguably great for games like apex as well. I tested scaling on my dad's 4K TV and, indeed, scaling to different sizes seems to work much better there compared to my G7 at 1440p.

Now, there are two options with this:
    1) the money. I don't even have a PC yet and I plan to buy one in the summer. Running the G7 and 240hz is one thing, but running 4K at 144hz is yet another story. Let alone, the screen is sold out everywhere and goes up to 1000€. So, we're talking close to 4000€ in total spendings. I'm working a lot and can do so in the summer, too, but damn, this hurts.

    2) It's ONLY 144hz. Now, I know what people are going to say, and they're probably right: 144hz is already super fast and used by most and you don't need 240hz+ if you're not professional yadeeyadeeya - but now I already have a G7 and 240hz and while I can't currently run anything at that speed (lol), going to 144hz does feel like a downgrade and a compromise.

Therefore, the other option would be to go down to 1080p but get a screen that has 240hz or more. That would cost me a lot of money as even a PC that runs shooters at high FPS on 1080p will be much cheaper than a 4K @ 144hz setup + according screen.

Another thing that complicates things is I really love the curve of the G7 - and I can't really get that in any other screen. Both, high HZ 1080p screens and the LG950 aren't curved.

It's a shame that scaling is such a b*****, I wish I could use the G7 easily on my Mac but it's just such an annoyance. And while I consider all these gaming things, using my Mac effectively is most important. I read a lot of text, articles, and I work from home and read a lot of emails. In that regard, a crisp 4K screen would sure be amazing.

Btw, I've really tried EVERYTHING to resolve this scaling issue (SwitchresX, all other programs in that direction, changing even the ROOT directory..). If anyone had success with this, though, on Big Sur, hit me up!

Pls help me find a solution/make a decision :) Maybe someone has the same dilemma or can relate with Mac OS at least.

    2018 Macbook Pro Question

    Posted: 12 May 2021 10:11 PM PDT

    Hey all,

Not sure if this is the correct sub for this question so maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I have a 2018 MacBook Pro that is iCloud locked. From what I've read the T2 chip makes bypassing this very hard. No I didn't steal it. My mom had a contract job and after the contract ended the company simply never asked for the computer back. It's been 3 years now and I thought eh if they haven't asked by now they're not worried about it. It's a full spec 15 in. model that has turned into a very very expensive paper weight. Is there any chance I can turn this into a working computer again or am I screwed? Maybe I'm better off selling it for parts?

    Thanks!

Cannot use the sidecar option in Macbook Pro 2015 15" Big Sur 11.2.1

    Posted: 12 May 2021 09:07 PM PDT

I have a macbook pro 2015 15" with Big Sur 11.2.1 and recently I bought an iPad 8th 2020. I knew that iPads can be used as second screen to macbooks. But when I tried with my MacBook pro, I cannot turn on the Airplay Display option to use iPad with sidecar. The AirPlay Display option has only one option in the dropdown menu and it is OFF.
