Posted: 16 May 2021 01:01 AM PDT Hello guys, I recently switched from Windows to MacOS. Back then I used to use the tool "Everything" which basically indexed all my files and let me query them through wildcards, etc in a highly performant manner (unlike Windows built in indexing). I wondered If I can turn on wildcard support for Spotlight search in MacOS somewhere? If that's not possible, then how would I query a search for files of a specific file extension / containing specific letters in their name? Is there a way to split the MacOS for different purposes? Posted: 15 May 2021 10:39 PM PDT I want to have a work space and personal space with corresponding desktops and files? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Who is still using the older versions of macOS? Posted: 15 May 2021 04:11 PM PDT I've tried installing Catalina and Big Sur for many times. And every time I return to Mojave or High Sierra (it's cool, that I can downgrade, not like with an iPhone). I do it because there are so much things that nag me, some programms don't work correctly, some are very different. And It feels like a heavier system in general (however, my mac isn't that old - macbook '17). Now I'll reinstall Nigh Sierra on my mac, because that's my favourite one. What can you say about updates? Do you use them? And if not - why? [link] [comments]

Posted: 16 May 2021 12:48 AM PDT Hi guys. Why the mail app only updates and gets mail when I open it? I never get notifications about new mail until I check by myself launching the app. Is it supposed to work like this? If it isn't, what should I do to get notifications without opening the app? I want to try MacOS is the standard configuration good enough? Posted: 15 May 2021 08:55 PM PDT I've never used a Mac Computer before, but it always has been on my bucketlist(don't know what else to call it) to own a Mac Device and to give it a try. Because the Macbook Air M1 costs only about 200€ more than the Mac Mini M1, i've decided to buy a Macbook Air M1. My Plan was to buy the standard config and use an external ssd as a storage expansion The Problem i'm facing is that i really don't know if the 999€ 8gb/256gb configuration would be good enough as i've read a lot of bad stuff about the 8gb / 256gb ssd swap memory issue and 8gb generally being a pretty lacking amount of ram in today's age. If i like MacOS i would sell the Macbook 13 as soon as the bigger 16 inch models release, so that was my thinking behind just buying the standard config, but at the same time i don't want my first impression of using MacOS skewed due to me cheaping out Then there's the option of buying the 512/16 version for 1520€ or the 256/16 one for 1300€ The Macbook Air wouldn't replace my main PC for now and the usecase would mostly be trading , chatting(discord, telegram) listening to music through spotify and trying out mac only software like final cut and logic, watching youtube videos just pretty basic stuff but mostly trading and chatting/surfing the web. my desktop pc has 32gb of ram and a 2tb nvme as the os drive and a 6 core i7 for reference. how long does it take to get acclimated from windows to mac btw? i just can't decide on my own and you guys know a lot more about macs than me Please help me, should i just pull the plug on the 999 conf or does my usecase require more ram (please keep in mind that i kinda only want to try it out for now)? Or don't FOMO at all and maybe just wait for the bigger macbooks to release? [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 May 2021 11:55 PM PDT Hey! How can I use my mac pro as a monitor for my iPad pro? The mirroring only lets me do it the other way around. When I tap on mirroring on my iPad, it can't find my MacBook. I tried turning off "hands-off," restarting devices, logging out. Both my devices are updated. Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 May 2021 11:11 PM PDT so I bought a new monitor (lg ultragear 24gn600-b 24) and am using it mostly with Logic Pro x (Apples Music production software). before I got my monitor, the default audio output would be through the laptop speakers of course--or through my monitor speakers that plugged into an external device. now, whenever I plug in my monitor, it automatically defaults to the monitor screen (which doesn't even have any speakers btw). its just super annoying and in Logic Pro x you have to go deeper in the presences to change audio outputs.. any insight would be super helpful in deleting it or setting a different default. 'lldb command requires developer tools' prompt from terminal Posted: 15 May 2021 10:57 PM PDT Earlier today I was trying a line of code I found on reddit for preventing Face Time from lowering the volume of my other applications during calls. I entered the code and got a window 'lldb command requires developer tools'. I hit downloaded and it took a few minutes to download but I don't see it anywhere on my Macbook. What exactly did i just download? Is there any chance this was malicious? [link] [comments]
How can I change the default folder that AirDropped files go to? / Posted: 15 May 2021 04:46 PM PDT This is essentially a three-part question, as I've tried a few ways to do this and followed tutorials but I keep running into errors. I'm running MacOS Big Sur 11.2.3 Skip to bottom for TL;DR I was wondering if there is an easy way to change the folder AirDrop deposits in, from Downloads to a Temp folder on my Desktop, because the Downloads folder gets so messy. I tried 2 ways, but neither worked. Here are the errors stopping me from continuing these tutorials: Ok, so first I tried the Automator method by downloading a third-party action. I downloaded the Zip from the video, and extracted and ran the .action file. I allowed Third Party Action installs through Automator, but when I try to continue the install, Automator won't let me load the action because it is from an unidentified developer. I tried allowing this in System Preferences, but do not get a prompt to allow the install in Security & Privacy, even after unlocking with admin password. I also tried turning off firewall, but got the same result. I believe this is an issue within Automator, but I can't figure it out and the tutorial doesn't mention it. Second, I tried to use a script built specifically for this, following [idownloadblog's tutorial](https://www.idownloadblog.com/2017/03/03/change-airdrop-destination-folder-mac/) which seems like the easiest way, It's a short script that when launched changes the AirDrop folder to the file path of your choosing. However, when I edit the text within quotes as instructed, with no typos or spelling errors, I am unable to save the script and am given this error from the Script Editor app, making me unable to follow the rest of the walkthrough. *"*The document "airdropSorter.scpt" could not be saved. (Error -1,752)" On the github I sourced this from, similar issues have been raised, saying it might be the incorrect file/script type for newer devices. TL:DRHow do I redirect where AirDrop saves incoming Pictures and Videos specifically?
Thank you for your time and any and all assistance! [link] [comments]
Keystroke command for switching between display mirroring and separate display for Mac Notebooks Posted: 15 May 2021 06:52 PM PDT Awhile ago there was a post here demonstrating how to switch between display mirroring and separate displays on a MacBook, and not using a monitor at the time, I foolishly passed it by without learning it. Oh, curse the shortsightedness of man! For I could not know then that I would soon have great use for this very frequently, and that I would not be able to find the keystroke, that I once so carelessly held, even with the help of the great Google. So now I humbly turn to you, fellow Redditor, and ask that if you possess the forgotten knowledge, you would share it with so foolish a mortal, that they might more easily switch modes of use when using an external monitor with their 2018 MacBook Air (intel) running the latest version of Big Sur. Choose which desktop a link opens in Posted: 15 May 2021 11:58 AM PDT Whenever I open a link in an app outside Safari like Messages or Zoom, the link always opens in a certain desktop. Is it possible for me to choose which desktop the link opens in? [link] [comments]
USB-C hubs: is there a limitation on power and/or connecting DVD player/recorders? Posted: 15 May 2021 12:49 PM PDT Does anyone know the limitations are of these USB-C hubs? I had two issues in the last weeks. I usually have connected a USB Ethernet to the hub. Then connected an external hard drive (spinning discs). It connects and goes on, but then goes off and then on. It seems that the power is not enough. So I can't connect both at the same time. The second issue was connecting a USB DVD player/recorder. That didn't get recognised at all. Without anything else connected. Are these common limitations? If I want it to work, is there particular specifications I need to pay attention to? They all happily advertise that it has X number of ports, but didn't know there were limitations on these ports (so not equal to an onboard USB-A port) Thanks Mine is: https://www.ugreen.com/products/5-in-1-usb-c-hub-with-4k-hdmi [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 May 2021 04:52 AM PDT For a while now I am on and off reading about different shells, working mostly with zsh and bash. Since macOS comes with a fairly recent version of tcsh I got interested in it for historic reason, of course tcsh being the native shell for BSD-based operating systems. I was wondering if someone using tcsh on macOS exclusively and how it changes the work flow (regarding, for example, scripts) and what are the pros and cons. [link] [comments]
Is there a way to disable AV1? Posted: 15 May 2021 11:00 AM PDT Hello! I've updated my old Macbook Air 2017 a couple of months ago and recently I noticed that YouTube videos were stuttering a lot. I've seen this before when trying to watch 4K videos on it: they would stutter mostly because of AV1. However, now even 720p videos stutter due to Safari supporting AV1. Not only that, but also Photo Booth seems to be using AV1 for my videos? So all of the videos that I previously recorded on my Mac now stutter a lot. Does anyone know if it is possible to disable AV1? I'm not sure if this is related to the Big Sur update or to the latest patch. [link] [comments]
Posted: 15 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT Hi, I've had my Macbook Pro from 2012 and it served me very well until I decided today to get a new one. TBH I got another Macbook because I didn't want to bother with restoring all my settings. Now I read all of the recommendations to "go with a clean install, it's worth it". My old OS was 10.10. The new one is... the newest, I guess. Bummer. Another important information is: I have a time capsule on which the old Macbook is saving backups at. (Edit: Grammar) Here are my questions: - Obviously I googled: is cp -R 'ing the appropriate path from my time machine backup to my local drive suffice to restore all the notes? https://www.macworld.com/article/223781/bugs-and-fixes-saving-your-notes-from-disaster.html#:~:text=You'll%20find%20it%20in,is%20invisible%20on%20your%20Mac. I hope these are the right paths. - What about all the other preferences? I Couldn't even try to restore because the new Macbook told me: "Backup is currently being used. Please try again later". What is the software trying to tell me? I have no idea. Is there a file lock on the old backup? The Old Macbook was asleep, so it wasn't backupping right now: There shouldn't be a file lock. I was expecting to select portions of my profile to be seamlessly restored. That's why I bought a Mac after all :-) I'm kind of stuck in the restore procedure and I'm hoping for your support. Thanks for your help and kind regards, [link] [comments]

Do dynamic wallpapers change depending on the time of the year? Posted: 15 May 2021 10:41 AM PDT They change depending on the time you are, but sunlight time is not the same all year. For example, in winter 7 pm is almost night time, but in summer it's still daytime. Does this affect dynamic wallpapers? [link] [comments]
