This came up in System Preferences. I did not install anything with a virus (checked on virustotal). What is this? How did it come? I'm on Catalina 10.15.7

Cleared hard-drive and now I can't boot into the OS

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:24 AM PDT

I got a second hand iMac and it needed a security code that I didn't have, so I removed the hard-drive and cleared out everything.

I think it also deleted the os, tried to boot with a USB but it just showed a flashing folder with a question mark.

I tried to open recovery but nothing is working, please help 😭😭

    Airdrop not notifying or sending

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:11 AM PDT

    I have a 12" Macbook 2017 and a 27" iMac 2017, both Big Sur 11.3.1.

If I drag-and-drop a file on my Macbook onto the icon for my iMac in AirDrop, nothing happens. No copying begins, no notification/request pops up on the iMac.

They're on the same Wifi, both have Bluetooth on, both have Firewall off. I can connect with screen sharing. I can mount a shared volume and copy that way (albeit really, really, slowly) but AirDrop just does nothing.

    What gives?

Dock autohide bug after mission control

    Posted: 10 May 2021 01:02 AM PDT

Hi! I am having a hard time with the autohide dock. Since at least mojave, the dock tend to randomly show up (not autohide) after mission control trigger (I am using top left hot corner, but I tried without, and it happens too). To have it to autohide again, I have to hover the dock. It may not sound a big deal, but I have to do that many many times a day (this is a very random behaviour), and it getting sometimes quite frustrating.

    I tried:

    - to remove the com.apple.dock.plist from the Preference folder + killall Dock

    - started in safe mode

    - on a new user session

    - on a fresh install on external drive

Nothing worked so far. Am I the only one getting annoyed with that?

Is it possible to display keyboard shortcuts in the context menu (similar to the menus that drop down from the menu bar)?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 07:22 PM PDT

I am wondering if anyone knows of a way to make the right-click context menu display the keyboard shortcuts corresponding to each action in the menu in the same way that the menu bar works. Thanks

If I turn or ‘safari suggestions’ on my MacBook Air, it doesn’t show results for my history on my iPhone. Both are not using iCloud for safari preferences. Why?

MacOS thinks I have two harddrives, both the size of my entire disk, but with different content

MacOS thinks I have two harddrives, both the size of my entire disk, but with different content

I did a rebuild on my Apple Air.
I have ended up with the OS thinking I have two partitions.

I thought it was an alias, but the content is different in some places at least.

they both report using my entire drive
Any idea what has happened and what I can do?

I want someone to test a crack old adobe software, dont worry its not a virus or anything, i just trying to switch to M1 and im quite worried that this old programme wont even open

    Posted: 09 May 2021 10:41 PM PDT

The software is Macromedia Freehand 11, Before Adobe Illustrator, freehand dominated the vector based world, now the Illustrator is the kind,

Freehand support had fallen back at 2010 or something, so the software is wayyyyyy outdated.

Most of the work i do is done in freehand, so im quite worried,

Once again its not a virus or anything,

Of you're willing to help please comment, ill share the drive link to it.

You can run it on a mac sandbox, Windows sandbox on mac or on direct mac, but please help. Thanks!

People should stop making crap benchmark videos to mislead about M1. M1 is just overrated.

    Posted: 09 May 2021 11:45 PM PDT

Look at the video below. What kind of benchmark is this? Both Macs are running different OS. The Youtuber should have Big Sur running on the 16" to make this a fairer test. Xcode is a native Apple application, and M1 is said to have been optimised for all native Apple applications. So versus a Macbook that is running a non-optimised CPU, how is this a fair test? The new 16" is definitely a beast and despite being a 9th gen intel processor, it is still a relevant CPU. If M1 is that good, why did apple not release a M1 16" last year like they do every year? So in all fairness, other than being part of a marketting attempt to mislead the consumers, this benchmark comparison is bull shit.

Safari memory leak on M1 MacBook Air?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 02:26 PM PDT

Is anyone aware of any memory issues with Safari on an M1 Mac? Mine was using 4GB of RAM with just 4 tabs open, and the computer was very hot as a result. This has happened a few times now. I like Safari, and want to use it as my main browser, but if it'll keep acting up like this? Well, I'm concerned, I guess. So yeah, anyone else with this problem? I have AdGuard and BitWarden installed as extensions. It's not AdGuard, since that was installed relatively recently and this issue happened before. Could it be BitWarden?

Is there inbuilt sandbox environment for software testing on M1? Same as Windows sandbox?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 09:29 AM PDT

Title is self explanatory, as a Windows power user thinking to switch to M1 or the M1x,

Windows saved me a lot of time with the inbuilt Windows sandbox environment, i was curious is there is a similar inbuilt app like that on macos big sur?,

Or is there some really good alternative software you know about?, Paid or free doesn't matter.

If you know please also say if it is for windows sandbox or mac sandbox.

    Thanks!

2010 Mac Mini can’t install OS

Homebrew vs MacPorts for Apple Silicon. Which should I go with? What's the difference and which is better?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:42 PM PDT

I just got a M1 Macbook Air, which is my first Macintosh ever. I come from a Linux background and miss some of the applications. I learned that there are ports available to macOS via Homebrew and MacPorts; so, I'm wondering what's the difference and which is better? Will both continue to be usable as Apple updates and changes MacOS? Which is cleanable if I uninstall a package or the package manager itself? What's Apple's view on third party package managers and why don't they build it in at this point?

I'm mostly a normal consumer who will do a variety of task and may even do multimedia editing if all of my editing software get ported over.

    Xerox Phazer 3117 on MacOS

    Posted: 09 May 2021 12:35 PM PDT

Hi folks. I have macOS Big Sur ver. 11.2.1 and want to make my ancient dinosaur printer Xerox Phazer 3117 work on it. Unfortunately, my Mac doesn't recognise it. I also can't find appropriate drivers online. Any ideas on how to fix it? Many thanks)

Is there an easy way to make a process work only when the screen is locked (M1 machines)?

    Posted: 09 May 2021 08:40 AM PDT

    Hi,

I'm currently toying with xmrig, mining dogecoins. I know it's not useful at all, that won't make me rich, I'm just doing it for fun and to understand cryptocurrencies a bit more.

Now, it works wonders on M1 machines, but of course it takes almost 800% of the CPU and makes the other apps slower (not slow by any means, but slower). The temperature of my MacBook Air M1 is a problem though.

I was wondering if there's an easy way to only allow the xmrig process when the screen is locked (so that as soon as the screen locks – 1 minute in my case – it mines at full capacity, as soon as I unlock the screen, the process if frozen.

I guess some clever scripting could fix that, or maybe there are build in functions that I'm not aware of.

    Thanks for your help!
