About the gold MacBook Air (M1) Posted: 11 May 2021 01:37 AM PDT I've been holding this in for many months now, working up the courage to finally for the most part say it in public. I for the most part know not everyone will particularly agree with my way of thinking, or that sort of such a statement should even be thought. But it is time to open up. Time to admit to myself and deal with it. And so reddit folks, today is the day. Today is the day I tell you that the M1 MacBook Air of Gold Colour is a lie. It is not gold, no! For it is indeed pink. There we go, I said it. After using the laptop since November 2020 I have been trying to ignore the luminance of the machine. I ordered the Gold version as I had previously used a Silver and Space Grey MacBook Pro(s), I thought I would shake it up a little and get a Golden MacBook, Especially seeing as the Pros don't come in the Golden colour. But here we are, 6 months later and I simply cannot stand lying to myself anymore, it is not gold, it is pink. In a way, this is a PSA for anyone thinking of buying an M1 air or future models, thinking it would be gold. It is not. [link] [comments]
Read NTFS drives on Apple Silicon? Posted: 10 May 2021 04:45 AM PDT Hey all - I'm an IT admin that's in a situation where person A has an Apple Silicon mac and wants to access data from a Windows laptop. The Windows machine did belong to person B, but they have now left the company. I was going to take out the hard drive from person B's Windows machine, put it into an external caddy which person A can then plug into their Mac to gain access to the data. However I'm reading in this article that Apple Silicon devices can't natively read NTFS drives, but there is a 3rd party app that can. My question is, has anyone tried this app and does it work? Or are there alternative methods out there to do this? Failing this I was just going to connect the drive to a Windows laptop, upload the data to cloud storage and give person A access to it. Any free webcam settings/zooming app? Posted: 11 May 2021 01:21 AM PDT Hi guys, I bought a new Rapoo webcam which has a very wide angle. Now, this is a problem for me, I tried to find any free app to zoom or crop it but I can't. I tried OBS, it's great but for some reason after starting the virtual camera feature, the MacBook fans go so high and start to be lagging. So, is there any free solution for this? Thanks! Can anyone suggest a USB Bluetooth adapter that works as expected with Big Sur? Posted: 10 May 2021 05:12 PM PDT Sorry, I had a good search - I can't find any (recent) information that answers my question. Got a 2017 MBP, running latest Big Sur (11.3.1) - with three bluetooth devices (mouse/keyboard and speaker system - BT 3.0). The quality of the BT module in the laptop is average at best with all three running, often the audio will tear/shudder - often I'll reach for the "reset bluetooth module" option to try again. I purchased a BT USB adapter on the weekend in an attempt to give better BT when using all three together - the TP-link UB400, which those in the Hackintosh circles seem to suggest will work. Plugging in the adapter - System Information detects it correctly as a "Cambridge Silicon Radio" bluetooth module. Running the The USB module detects my devices, but attempts to "pair" any device just waits and waits... never completes. Have confirmed that Big Sur is considering this module the system Bluetooth module. Can unplug the module and Big Sur flips back to the internal module and all is good / devices will pair. Plug module back in, flips back - but unable to pair. Anyone got more ideas? Or a BT USB module that will work with Big Sur? The Internet isn't really giving me good/convincing answers of hardware that will work. Annoying. [link] [comments]

Posted: 10 May 2021 04:04 PM PDT I recently had a scare with a virus and was wondering what the best Adblocker on Safari is. I've read some reviews for most and they aren't great, so I'm hoping for some insight. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Posted: 10 May 2021 11:22 PM PDT So I logged onto my Mid 2012 this morning, and it came up with a message asking for the Keychain password. I tried my Apple ID, anything else and it didnt work. And none of the other apps work. So i restarted my mac and it had a circle with a line through. Anyone know the cause? Edit: Its all good now, restored from a backup, but still want to know how it happened. [link] [comments]
Ethernet adapters continue to crap out in Big Sur Posted: 10 May 2021 02:33 PM PDT I've never had issues with ethernet in Catalina, but it's been constant ethernet-related issues with Big Sur and they haven't gone away in 11.3.1. This is on a 2017 MacBook Pro Escape. I have three adapters at my disposal: a CableMatters hub, a HP USB-C gigabit dongle, and an AmazonBasics USB-A gigabit dongle. The former two use the RTL8153 chip while the latter has a AX88179 chip. With the default Apple-provided driver for the RTL8153 adapters, the ethernet connection craps out pretty quickly under any significant load. An easy example is to run Speedtest over and over on my gigabit connection. If I install the latest driver provided by Realtek from December, the connection's more stable, but tools such as MenuMeters show no downlink activity. After a few days the connection drops to wifi and requires a reboot to fix. I thought the AX88179 would fare better, as ASIX has provided a beta DriverKit package. With whatever Apple provides as the default, speeds are capped to about 450 Mbits. This driver looked to be more stable (and the AmazonBasics dongle emits much less heat than the other two), with the DriverKit driver working mostly fine with no significant CPU load and downlink speeds showing fine, but now I noticed after a while it too would drop and reset after doing a Speedtest and would need a restart to fix. Anyone found a dongle and driver combo that has worked in Big Sur without fail and without the need to reboot after a few days? My last attempt is to pair the AmazonBasics dongle with the CableMatters hub to see if it's the no-name hub that is the issue, but beyond that I'm out of ideas. [link] [comments]

Time Machine does a full backup once a week or more. Posted: 10 May 2021 09:34 PM PDT Time Machine keeps doing a full backup about once a week or more since my upgrade. I'm backing up to a NAS share over a wired line. The backups complete successfuly. I'm on a Mac Book Pro 2017. It's eating up all my bandwidth. Anyone else have this issue? [link] [comments]

Moving from iTunes to the new Music App... Posted: 10 May 2021 08:18 PM PDT Recently got a 2020 MBPro (16"). Love the machine, and now I need to figure out how to get my music library to play through it. I used to keep all my music on an external drive, but just notice that somehow the directory there kept nesting: https://i.imgur.com/3PFZS1A.png In any case, does anyone know of a how-to to get the new machine to look to this directory to get me back to my music? I've also been thinking that I should copy this music onto a newer, faster HD attached to the machine. Would it be better to simply copy everything over to a new drive and tell the new Mac to find it all there? [link] [comments]
How do I disable Top Hits in Mail? Posted: 10 May 2021 12:42 PM PDT This is driving me crazy, every time I search for mail it will show up all results and then jumps up and down to include the Top Hits (always pinned to the top). How can I get rid of this completely? Is this part of Siri suggestions? [link] [comments]
link URLs in macOS Mail getting mangled Posted: 10 May 2021 06:22 PM PDT I'm reading an email in macOS Mail and click on a link in the message. The URL sent to Safari (and it's the same URL that I see when I hover over the link) has some text deleted, so Safari justifiably tells me "nope". If I use Mail's "raw source" option I can see that the URL is correct in the raw message. If I view this same troublesome message in iOS Mail the link works fine. This doesn't happen too often, maybe once a day, but it's a real annoyance. Has anyone else had this problem? And if so, did you find a solution? [link] [comments]
Safe to update to Big Sur 11.3 in MacBook Pro 2016 ? Posted: 10 May 2021 03:59 PM PDT So I had a bad experience with Big Sur since it was released, safari lags and choppy animations with YouTube videos and all sorts of videos. App Store animations where laggy too; widgets where buggy and control center too. After that I decided to roll back to Catalina and I'm there since 11.2. Also I found that safe mode was really slow, like very slow, something that didn't happen with Catalina ( it was slow ofc, because it doesn't use the graphics, but didn't crash like Big Sur). Do you guys recommend going to Big Sur now? How was your experience with 2016 models? My model is a MacBook Pro 2016 13 without Touchbar. [link] [comments]

Migrating Intel to M1 and back (Intel needs repair) Posted: 10 May 2021 11:46 AM PDT Hey everyone I have a weird question - I upgraded to an Air M1 and I'm letting my wife use it while her Intel MBP is getting repaired (condensation damage which pisses me off but story for another post). We did a backup on Time Machine of the Intel MBP and it was loaded to the M1. No real issues, just Adobe needed a complete reinstall to remove a bug on the Creative App. Now, when her Intel MBP comes back from the shop wiped clean and factory reset, can we Migrate back via Time Machine from the M1 to Intel? No one really is "downgrading" from M1 to Intel, so I'm really curious if anyone has done it. [link] [comments] |
