I was trying to load some stuff for taxes and it was being insanely slow. Then even loading finder is slow. I closed out of everything and it didn't help. Not sure what's wrong, a bit worried. It just concerns me that it says it's been in use for 24 hours constantly over the past week that it hasn't been used.

Edit: played a light game(roblox) and it crashed and said something about ad block it flashed one second on my screen and then went away... that's never happened at all. I have ad block but it seemed weird.. possible virus?

You MacBook is a tool....use it

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:13 AM PDT

This isn't a rant. Far from it. But in recent weeks, there's been lots of posts about people worried about using their new shiny MacBooks and I wanted to share my thoughts.

I've had my MBA now for a month and I love it.

Like many people on this subreddit, I love my tech and I look after all my tech to ensure it keeps that new look for as long as possible. My new MacBook was no different. I quickly bought a nice case to keep it in and I've even ordered an iPhone (moving from android) but at the end of the day, my MBA is a tool. For me, It's a tool for web browsing, for writing code, making videos, photo editing and checking emails. I'm certainly not a power user but I'm far from a light user either. In any case, I'm learning to use my MacBook as it was intended and to stop worrying about keeping it like new. I suggest others do the same.

Yes, you will read and write to your SSD and one day, it will fail. Until then, use it, keep an eye on it and if it looks like there is something abnormal happening, jump onto Google and see if anyone else has had the same problem.

Yes, the battery will become less efficient as it ages. That is an issue with battery technology. If it needs charging, charge it up. If it's left charging over night/for 24 hours/ for a week or for a month, it won't explode but if you don't plug it in, it'll go flat and you won't be able to use it. The same happens with my electric car. In 2021, consumer batteries won't last for ever (they are consumables) but the technology is improving all the time.

Windows if different to Mac. Yes, there are things you need to learn and there are pros and cons between the two systems but you will learn those differences and you will cope. Google is your friend. You aren't the first person to make the transition and you won't be the last. If I can do it, you certainly can do it.

Should you buy the 256/512 or other Hard drive? Only you know. If you want to fill it with apps, store large amounts of photos or videos locally then you'll need more storage. If you can afford a higher spec model then go for it. If you have a budget, stick with it.

In any case, this new generation of MacBooks are fantastic pieces of technology. They are lovely to use, the are fast, they are light and portable and the list of positives goes on an on. At the end of the day though, it is a tool. It's a tool for your day job, for school or a tool to do all the stuff you like doing where you need a computer of some sort. If you're worried about using it then consider spending half the amount on a cheaper option and putting the rest towards a holiday.

    Screen Delamination

    Posted: 03 May 2021 03:43 PM PDT

    Hi!

I've had a 2017 13" MBP since August 2018 and will upgrade to an M1 MBA in a few months. My only problem with this Mac is that the screen has a large number of marks on it caused probably by the keyboard. My question is you've experienced the same thing on the older, or more importantly on the M1 Macs.

Survey for opinions on trackpad sizes on Macbooks

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:45 PM PDT

I just purchased the M1 MBA and it is the first Mac computer I ever used.

I found the trackpad to be way too big, but many of my friends said they love the trackpad. I noticed the trackpad on the MBP 13 is even bigger than the MBA.

This got my curious to find out how people feel about the trackpads on their macbooks. I made a survey.

Suggestions for how to fix my Macbook's Busted Screen?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 04:33 PM PDT

Back in January, my Macbook had a massive crack in it that kinda looked like someone took a knife to it. As of today, it looks like this.

Right now, I currently just have it hooked up to a Monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc. and it works fine as a desktop setup. However, I obviously can't carry it around and use it as a laptop, since the screen is pretty screwed up, which will be an issue as I have some classes next semester that will be in person and I need my Macbook, especially for coding.

My Macbook is a 2013 15" model that I got in 2014. I've had it serviced once before by Apple in 2019, where they told me it was about to go vintage, i.e. they cannot repair it anymore.

What should I do? Should I invest in a new computer or try and fix this one's screen? A local repair shop (non-Apple) said that the screen alone would be 400 to replace, and another 100 in labor and taxes.

How do you set two applications to be "active" on two monitors?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 07:36 PM PDT

I want to go from Chrome (monitor 1) to an Excel document (monitor 2), using as few clicks as possible to extract information from the Excel document to copy/paste into Chrome. How do I keep both of these applications active so that I don't have to keep "activating" Excel?

Is it possible to get Mail desktop notifications when the app is fully closed?

Hey guys, I'm kind of new to Apple laptops and I was wondering if there is any way to receive email notifications while the app is fully closed. I'm not getting any notifications from the Apple Mail app or Microsoft Outlook. On my Windows laptop, I would receive email notifications.

Macbook Pro 16inch 2019 Bootcamp Sleep/Hibernate Reboot Issue

    Posted: 03 May 2021 01:04 PM PDT

Does anybody have a working windows build on a MacBook which can successfully sleep/hibernate? As soon as mine enters sleep or screen timeout it will sit on a blank screen for about a minute and then all the fans spin at 100% for a brief moment before restarting and entering back into MacOS.

This has been the case on multiple versions of Windows/MacOS and graphics card drivers. Curious if it's just me who has this issue as its pretty annoying.

Increase of battery cycles due to use of external monitor?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 11:31 AM PDT

    Hi

I recently got the MacBook Air M1 (I love it), and I'm thinking about buying an external monitor for when I use it at my desk. I've read quite a few posts that said that the use of an external monitor makes the battery drain way faster. If this is true, wouldn't the amount of battery cycles increase too? What would lead to bad battery condition faster than if u would just use your MB regularly.

I really want to use an external monitor, but I'm worried about this because I want my MB to last quite a while and don't want the battery to degrade too fast.

    Thanks in advance

    Sam

Mouse scroll settings changing trackpad settings

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:33 AM PDT

I recently bought a MacBook air and have been loving it. I just bought a mouse to use with it, but am having problems with the scrolling settings. I like to have natural scrolling turned on for the trackpad but off for the mouse. Whenever I change the setting for the mouse it automatically changes it for the trackpad as well. Is there any way to have the trackpad and mouse scrolling setting independent of each other or will I just have to switch back and forth whenever I switch between the trackpad and mouse?

Does anybody else have this problem when trying to connect to an external monitor?

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:24 AM PDT

Just a few months ago I upgraded to a 13 inch 2021 Macbook Pro with the M1 chip. I love it! I use an XSPUS brand hub so I can plug my 3D Acer monitor into my laptop with an HDMI cord.

It's been working perfectly fine up until recently. Sometimes when I plug the monitor in, it says "no signal" then my laptop will detect the monitor. Although my laptop detects the monitor & I can move my mouse over to it, the screen on the monitor is black. Sometimes it freaks out & my laptop will flash as if it's trying to connect to the monitor. I've tried everything & it's getting really frustrating. Any advice would be appreciated.

Got M1 MacBook air back from repair and can't install OS (no disk to install on)

    Posted: 03 May 2021 10:04 AM PDT

Not sure where to post this so...

I got my mac back from repair and when I tried to install OS I reach the part where it asks to 'Select the disk where you want to install macOS' - but theres no disk to install the OS on.

Upon googling, I ended up in disk utility. Here, this is what I see.

Under the apple ssd internal item, theres a 'container disk 3' APFS container. I don't know what this is, but its taking up near 245gb of the data (basically all of it). It's also not turning up as a disk I can install the OS on.

    Any help?

M1 Macbook Pro vs Macbook Air

    Posted: 03 May 2021 09:39 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am new to this sub and I currently own an HP laptop that I bought back in 2015. I just started university and was looking to switch to Apple. I love its interface (use an iphone) but I am confused between Macbook Pro and Macbook Air, as well as the specifications.

My usage would be mainly college stuff which includes a lot of youtube and a lot of zoom. I've heard Macbook Air heats up a lot due to no fan. Moreover, I also plan to use Photoshop on it so help me out here.

I want the 13" version but should I upgrade the specifications or is 8GB Ram and 256GB SSD enough if I plan to use it for zoom, youtube, netflix & photoshop? I don't want my device to heat up.

    Thanks in advance.
