iPad Pro 2020 vs iPad Pro 2021

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 11:35 AM PDT

I just used a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse with my iPad Air 4 for the first time and it was.... transformative.

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 08:37 AM PDT

I have seen a number of people comment about how they love their folio keyboard cases. However, the $200+ price tag on 'decent' looking ones has steered me clear away. The result has been that I have not used a keyboard or mouse with an iPad since purchasing (months ago), and frankly those that have suggested replacing their laptops with iPads seemed a bit 'crazy'. As a finger-driven device, the iPad Air 4 is great, but it isn't fast enough / has a lot of annoying hurdles to effectiveness (might be my fingers, but it doesn't read touches consistently), and frankly is cumbersome at times.

Today, for some reason, I decided to connect my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse to my iPad and use it on my desk like my laptop. And, HOLY CRAP, it was transformative. The iPad works and FEELS easily 10x better and I feel like I just bought a brand new computer. Here's why:

    1) It feels snappier as an iPad. The time it takes me to get through webpages, word documents, PDFs is CONSIDERABLY faster with a mouse and keyboard. While I've loved the pencil for navigation, the mouse and keyboard really demonstrate how powerful the iPad is as a work device.

    2) It feels snappier than my MacBook. In addition to the above, I would fairly confidently say that I can multi-task and rapidly web-browse FASTER than my 2018 MacBook Pro. I don't know why this is, but everything seems so much faster and contained within the iPad, whereas with my MacBook there seems to be longer loading times / more 'jittery' feedback, and it feels more 'spacious'.

    3) To my surprise, it is also nearly as functional as a MacBook for basic word-editing / writing / research. I had heard of people 'replacing their laptops' with iPads, but thought this was a small crowd and that it would not be a feasible option because some of the simple features / commands would be too different and cumbersome. I can honestly say that the file management system, the features of Word, the utility of the pencil with PDFs, and the ease and speed of using / transferring apps and web-browsing is actually similar to using a MacBook. For those that don't know there are a lot of hidden features of useability there for use with a mouse and keyboard that I had no idea existed (basically, you can treat it like a computer and it will act like a computer).

    4) Switching apps and web-browsing is godly simple and quick. I can't stress this enough again. The time it takes me to click on the bottom ribbon, the safari app, and hit on the website I wanted to land on is @ least 1/2 the time to my MacBook. The fact I can treat the iPad like a computer, my phone, and my streaming device all-in-one is a big part of the 'transformative' feeling I have when using it.

A caveat is that the battery life doesn't seem 'great' so far, with it seeming slightly worse in my use over the past day than my MacBook. Also, the file management system seems to use my iCloud exclusively, which I am a bit scared of consistency (being an old hat). But damn am I surprised. If external monitor support is good / improved (from what people have complained about - I've never tried it), I can honestly see iPads as an ABSOLUTELY REASONABLE (and actually somewhat desirable) alternative to laptops for MOST people. Add another USB-C port and longer battery life, and seriously I don't know why I would use a laptop again.

To conclude, to those who already knew this, you guys weren't serious enough about how f'n good this thing is with a keyboard and mouse. To those who didn't already know, try it out. If you're a student (in a writing discipline) or an old educator like myself, this thing is quite the piece of technology. It may completely revolutionize my need for a laptop ever again.

That's my rant for today. Happy to hear anyone's alternative thoughts.

    Signed, New iPad Fanboi.

    iPad OS/Mac OS Fusion

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 11:25 AM PDT

Okay, so its evident everyone has seen the event by now, hello from the UK!

Now looking at the pro line-up that brings M1 and Mini LED to the pro models i seriously cant see the real reason to upgrade from the 2020 to the 21!

The real reason for this post is that I'm both a MBP owner and 12.9 2020 pro owner. I use my iPad daily and my mac has begun to gather dust and I'm literally at the stage of selling it. I cant help but notice the small similarities that are streamlining both OS's - changing the volume control on Big Sur, dock control, widgets etc. I personally think within the next few years, we could see a Mac OS come to iPad. I mean, a desktop architecture chip without apps that can fully take advantage of it would be a waste, would it not?!

I'm very intrigued on hearing your opinions!

    Much love

How do you get around the limitations of iPadOS?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 12:17 PM PDT

Now that it's confirmed that the iPad will have macbook level hardware but maintain its tablet software, I'm curious how some of you maximize productivity given the limitations of the OS. I'd like to hear about (1.) what apps you're using the most on your iPads for productivity and (2.) what hard limitations that you just can't get around on your iPads. I'm gonna be preordering one of the new iPads soon and I want to get a better sense of what I can and can't integrate into an iPad as part of my work setup as a developer.

Seriously debating an iPad Pro for VNC use, looking for client suggestions

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 02:34 PM PDT

I'm looking for a VNC client to connect to a remote Mac, but Apple Pencil right click support and low latency is an absolute must for me.

Is it possible to use an Apple Pencil for this, and does anyone recommend a client that has decent latency and right click on pencil support?

    Thanks!

    Posted: 19 Apr 2021 06:47 PM PDT

I found my old iPad, I believe it's 2nd or 3rd gen, however youtube can't be updated, my purchased apps can't be updated, basically irs entirely useless.

What options do I have to give this thing some life?

    Pencil 2 Scribble & To-Do Lists

    Posted: 20 Apr 2021 01:24 AM PDT

I've been trying to replace my paper to-do lists with an iPad Air + To Do List App (Todoist etc) and Pencil, but I'm having trouble with letters and words being incorrectly entered in.

I've tried different ways of writing but it's taking up too much time (or not possible at all) for Scribble to correctly recognise the letters/words. Is there a trick to this or am I expecting too much from Scribble? It's looking like I either:

    • Use the display keyboard to type in my to-do list items, making the pencil pointless
    • Use the pencil to scribble onto a Goodnote template that looks like a to-do list, but it's essentially a static page with no functionality (eg tick to complete, dates etc)
