The YouTube app issues forced me to use safari, which after some time has become even better experience

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 11:31 AM PDT

So, I have been using YouTube app as the default YouTube video watching. But somehow in the last months I get lots more ads and annoying invitations for premium. Also, i think in the past I was able to download and use Picture in Picture (pip) (is that corrrect?).

Anyways, due to especially the ads and the premium invitations it was enough motivation to move to safari. I installed AdGuard (enabled all the categories) and in this way am able to skip the ads. In the beginning I really missed the swiping, like moving a playing video into the corner to browse further on YouTube (similar to pip, but then only within the app).

But now, finally, after couple of months, got used to the web browser option. Skipping the ads is nice, although I do wish to support the creators, but the YouTube app ads really became absurd. Also I use pip quite often now. And open an extra tab to continue browsing on YouTube without interrupting the video. The video either plays in the other tab or I can make is show to do pip.

Anyways, just wanted to share. Maybe you can share some tips that makes the YouTube experience better than I tried here.

Anyone have any idea how to do something like this? It's complex I know but it's something I think should be sort of possible.

    Annotated files become HUGE

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 01:53 AM PDT

Title more or less says it all:

I recently bought an iPad Air 4 and the pencil and I love it so far.

My main problem now is that, when I read and annotate/comment/edit PDFs within "Files" with the pencil the pdf becomes huge. I started reading a book for uni and it has 50mb, after marking and commenting 20 pages the file went up to 120mb

Even though I have an iCloud plan, I don't want to waste storage on some highlighted PDFs. I also don't want to switch to another app, as I want/need the iCloud sync between my Apple devices.

Does anyone know how to annotate files with a pencil without creating a file bigger than Alaska?

    Cheers!

Got an iPad in the mail

I randomly got an iPad in the mail from what appears to be Amazon. I did not order it and concerned it might be a scam. Has anyone heard of this?

Wings of Icarus: iPad Pro Horror Repair Story

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 07:25 AM PDT

Long story short: I've replaced my 2020 11" iPad Pro 512 GB four+ times for screen defects, and I still have an iPad with a dead pixel.

Short story long: I received a 2020 11" iPad Pro 128 GB as a gift during Summer 2020. It had a dead pixel on the screen, but I had it replaced at the Apple Store with no issues. As I used the iPad, I found myself quickly running out of space because the projects I work on generate some pretty large files. I decided to sell my unit and upgrade to the 512 GB model.

When my new iPad (we'll call it iPad 1) came in the mail, it had a dark spot on the screen in the lower right corner. After observing it, restarting the device, and making sure the screen was clean, it became very clear that the dark spot was some sort of gunk between the backlight layer and the LCD display. I couldn't get an appointment at the Apple Store, so I was redirected to Geek Squad at Best Buy.

The tech recognized the issue and sent iPad 1 off for repair. About a week later, I got a call from Best Buy stating that the Apple Repair Center couldn't identify my issue and just wiped my device and sent it back. When I went to pick up the iPad, the Best Buy tech and I both could see that the screen impurity was still there, so he suggested I return the iPad to Amazon (where I had purchased it from).

I had no issues returning iPad 1 (and its Apple Care +) and decided to go through Best Buy for my second purchase attempt once the money from my return cleared. iPad 2a came about two weeks after ordering, and it had two screen impurities, similar to iPad 1, but this time directly in the middle of the screen. The full length of the right side of the screen was also darker than the rest of the display, almost like one of the backlight LEDs was not as bright as the others. I was able to schedule an appointment with the Apple Store this time, so I brought in iPad 2a and they ordered a replacement for me. The replacement, iPad 2b, came in a week later. I picked it up, brought it home, and lo and behold - it had a dead pixel on the right side of the screen.

At this point, my boyfriend was telling me to just deal with it. First world problems and all that. But my intention with getting this iPad was for it to be a device I'd hang on to for as long as possible, and spending $1,200 USD for a device with a defect just didn't sit right with me. So I went back to the Apple Store and they ordered me another replacement. Another week later, iPad 2c arrived, with another dead pixel. I noticed it while still at the Apple Store because I asked to see the device before leaving, but the tech who was helping me said that he couldn't see the dead pixel (because the screen was only at half brightness while in setup mode), and if I wanted to have it addressed, he would have to send the iPad out to a repair center for further testing. I was so frustrated at this point and really didn't want to be without an iPad for any longer (it had been a little under two months), so I just took the iPad home and accepted defeat.

I used iPad 2c for a few weeks, but the dead pixel was really bothering me. It's towards the top of the screen and only super noticeable against light or solid-colored backgrounds, so I figured I'd just chalk it up to first world problems and ignore it. And then, on a whim, I hopped on the Apple Support text chat and they happily sent me out a replacement. Once I'd get the replacement, I was to put iPad 2c in the same box and send it back to Apple.

    Well.

iPad 2d arrived and not only did it have a dead pixel on the left side of the screen, the far right side of the screen had the same backlight LED issue as iPad 2a. I contacted Apple phone support and asked if I could just send back iPad 2d and keep iPad 2c because out of all of my attempts, iPad 2c had the least offensive screen defects. The support tech wanted me to accept another replacement, and I said that, while I appreciated the offer, maybe I'd just spent my last shot and I should just be happy with what I have. I flew too close to the sun with wanting more than my original iPad could provide. The support tech really wanted me to accept another replacement, and despite my reluctance, he brought his supervisor on the phone and she said that they would add a note to my support ticket that they'd have me pick up a brand new in box replacement at the Apple Store once iPad 2d was returned.

It's been a week since I received a confirmation that my device replacement and return is complete, and I still haven't heard anything from support about picking up a new iPad from the Apple Store. However, I'm thinking that this is probably the point where I should just leave things as they are and keep iPad 2c. I've been holding off on applying my Paperlike screen protector for several months as it is and I'd like to just return to my normal workflow.

There are clearly manufacturing difficulties (most likely because of COVID) and the 11" iPads are falling victim to them. I'll also note that all of the 512 GB iPads involved in this debacle were manufactured in October 2020. I had a passing thought that I could maybe get a defect-free iPad if I can find one NOT manufactured in October 2020, but at this rate, my luck is proving otherwise.

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading. I think I just needed to get this off of my chest. I'm sure there are people who will suggest I keep trying to get a replacement, or to even pursue that brand new in box iPad the support tech promised, but considering iPad 1 and 2a were both brand new in box, I don't have any reason to believe that another new iPad wouldn't also suffer from screen impurities.

Has anyone else experienced similar screen defects or repair/replacement issues with their 2020 11" iPad Pros? Or did I really just fly too close to the sun?

    Cheers.

ZUGU iPad cover - if you are listening

    Posted: 23 Mar 2021 06:50 AM PDT

I use the Zugu iPad cover. (iPad pro 12.9 2018) It has a pencil sleeve on the rear. I would suggest another wider sleeve to hold items such as the USB C headphone adapter and a larger dongle, I have the Baseus type dongle. Being able to carry these in a wider stretchy pocket on the back next to the pencil would be great. Even one to hold the charger and cable ? (I would,d also re design the USB C port opening on the cover wider to allow the C dongles to attach easier, the Baseus type does not make contact without an extension... Also redesign the upper right corner to accept dongles such as the one I am mentioning.

It is a great cover, these are minor inconveniences, but just wanted to mention in case someone front there is watching. Thanks.

Photoshop on iPad Experience, Android user needing some guidance!

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:32 PM PDT

I have been using only Android devices since 2011. I am wanting to look into a tablet but man the Android options are... Well they're not great.

I am planning to use the device for emails, social media sometimes, Lightroom editing and hopefully some things in Photoshop. I don't make extravagant huge projects in Photoshop, but I would like to be able to do some basic things like making YouTube thumbnails mostly. What I notice on Android is the Photoshop apps are multiple small apps that do a few things which just feels not great to me. So now I'm looking into the iPad Air 2020 and I'm curious what the Photoshop app is like.

Question about the iPad Air 4‘s usb port

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 05:31 PM PDT

Hello everyone. I'm sorry if this information is actually easy accessible, but if so I'm to dumb to find it.

Which usb version is built into the iPad Air 4? (I know it's usb-c, wanna know if it's usb 3.0 or 3.1) I'm planning on getting an usb type c hub. Now I cannot find out which usb version in in the iPad.

Everything I can find out is, that it is usb c, without any information about the rest.

    Thanks in advance

puzzle solving with iPad and Apple Pencil: a mixed bag

    Posted: 22 Mar 2021 02:44 PM PDT

I recently tried to use my iPad Pro 12.5'' 4th generation and the newer Apple Pencil to solve the famous MIT Mystery Hunt regular expression puzzle: http://www.mit.edu/~puzzle/2013/coinheist.com/rubik/a_regular_crossword/grid.pdf .

I would say my results were a mixed bag.

First, I tried to download the puzzle into Acrobat Reader and use the pencil to solve it there. After about an hour, I closed the puzzle, but when I reopened it the annotations were all slightly skewed. This is a paid version of Acrobat, and could not accurately handle simple annotations.

Next, I used the Apple Notes app. I took a screenshot, and opened the puzzle as a photo. After a while, I closed the puzzle. When I reopened it, I found that none of my annotations could be erased. For reasons known only to Apple, it decided my annotations were unerasable parts of the original photo. So another hour's work wasted.

Finally, I tried GoodNotes. This worked fine and after some trial and error (with the puzzle not the app) I was able to solve the puzzle. In some ways, it was a pleasant experience. The ability to double tap the pencil to switch from pen to eraser was convenient.

But in other ways, it was imperfect. Erasing did not respect cell boundaries; I wish there was a setting to do this, it would have been helpful for solving puzzles. And sometimes double tapping did not quite work. Even after hours of use I could not get double tapping to work to switch the input mode of the pencil 100% of the time, although it does work 95% of the time.

Overall, with GoodNotes I think the experience was pleasant and that the new Pencil is useful.

The Apple documentation is also sloppy. A quick Google search on "apple pencil double tap sensitivity" brought up this web page, https://support.apple.com/guide/ipad/apple-pencil-ipad63913965/ipados which claims that iPadOS 14 supports changing the duration of the double tap gesture by going to a particular menu, but the documentation is inaccurate. I do not understand why - and I have run into this issue many times - Apple cannot link its code to its documentation so that when one changes, the other does.

I personally think that when Apple or Adobe knows of a bug that can erase work in software that saves documents, Apple should require that the bug be explicitly documented in the App Store. This would be much more useful than a lot of other things Apple requires of software vendors.

Edit: Edited to account for u/keithhannen 's tip about GoodNotes.
