M1 MacBook Pro vs. 2018 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:47 PM PST

I heard a lot of good things about the M1 chip, but is there really a huge difference between the M1 MacBook Pro 16GB vs. the 2018 16GB other than the battery life?

The main issues I have with my 2018 Pro is that the battery will start draining really fast and the fans turn on randomly once in awhile. And chrome is extremely slow sometimes too. Unfortunately I can't use another browser because of some chrome extensions I need.

I'm assuming the battery life issue is fixed with the M1, but does the 16GB M1 MacBook Pro still run chrome slow?

    Battery draining while sleeping

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:00 AM PST

Hi, I bought a M1 Macbook Pro in December, really happy with the laptop so far, especially the battery. Lately though, I've been noticing faster battery drain while sleeping, thing that never happened before. 8% in 7 hours of sleep.

I just used the command pmset -g log|grep -e " Sleep " -e " Wake " to check the sleeping behaviour pattern. Here are the results:

It goes on and on until 07:30:00 and 92% battery left. Is it normal to see this message every few seconds? I'm thinking something is wrong. How is your M1 Macbook doing?

I noticed that after installing Amphetamine, I tried it for a bit, but since I wasn't using it a lot, I uninstalled it. Did it mess up the system?

EDIT: I quit BetterTouchTool without uninstalling it, and checked how it went this morning:

144hz on m1 macbook feels choppy compared to windows machine?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:30 PM PST

I have a 2020 M1 Macbook air, a AW2721D display, and a windows machine running a 3060ti. Running 144hz or 240hz on my windows machine feels buttery smooth, where as 144hz on the m1 mac via hdmi feels only marginally smoother than 60hz. I've had this issue with my previous 2017 15 inch MBP on a 34 inch ultrawide. Is this just a mac issue in general or is there something I'm not doing properly?

    Thanks!

Best Buy open box water damage issue with MBA M1

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:32 AM PST

Need your expertise - Reddit! I bought a Best Buy open-box MBA M1 256 gb in Rose Gold for 750 USD on Dec 26th, 2020. The price was a steal, and I was looking for a new machine so couldn't resist it. I had been perfectly happy with the purchase - machine is insanely fast, Citrix workspace works great without any issues (my main work software) and loooonggg battery life! This was until a fine day in early Feb, I got an error in Microsoft Teams that the camera couldn't be detected. Everything else was working perfectly. I thought it was some bug after the Big Sur update, so restarted the machine but the problem persisted. Looked up online and didn't find any solutions for the M1 machine (I checked with other apps - same error, checked the privacy preference - no issue there!). I don't use the camera very frequently so, took it to the genius bar a few weeks later. They ran the system diagnostic and identified an issue with the ambient sensor, which they thought was causing the issue. They had to ship it out for repair. A few days later, I get a photo update from apple repair saying that they detected water damage to the motherboard and quoted 799USD for replacement. I obviously asked them to return it without repair. I am writing this post on the same laptop, there are literally no other issue than the camera not being detected.

I DID NOT cause the water damage. So, my theory is that sometime between the device being initially sold (which apparently was around Nov 26th) and bought by me open box, water damage had happened but no issues had yet occurred. Best Buy just inspected it and sold it to me as open box. I obviously am out of the return window of best buy, can't buy the apple care now (since I'm already more than 3 months from Nov 26th). I just got it back from apple repair a few days ago. My next step will be to go to the Best Buy and ask them for repair as well. But I'm pretty sure they will find the same issue and obviously blame it on me. I am curious what you'd all suggest I do next?

    M1 Macbook Air Webcam Quality

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:57 PM PST

Hey, I got an M1 Macbook Air this past week to replace my dying computer. I just Facetimed a friend and noticed that the webcam quality is absolutely awful.

Is anyone else experiencing this? I'm calling Apple tomorrow. Thanks!

Weird spot of pixels on MBP randomly

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:14 PM PST

Title. I just opened my laptop and found a grey spot of pixels. Not sure if there's something I can do about it without taking it to Apple. Anybody got any ideas?

When can I know about the possible release date of MacBook Pro M1 16 inches?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:04 PM PST

I could not wait any longer and want to upgrade it to M1, M1 look so extremely powerful, especially for 13 inches, but I don't like 13 inches laptop, I want a large MB Pro.

Will it happen this in first half of this year or second half of this year or just even never? I haven't followed up with Apple news lately

Podcast app using over 200% CPU (overheating, slowing down, fan blasting)

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:40 PM PST

I'm running Big Sur 11.2.2 on my 2019 MacBook Pro.

The computer heats up, slows down, and gets super loud. I usually close any other open windows and walk away to let it cool down, but just now I only had Messages up in the background, so I checked the CPU and it was at 201%.

This happens every time I open the Podcasts app, even before looking for an episode or starting to play one.

After a quick google search I found a couple others who had similar issues, and people suggested clearing out podcast files or making sure there is airflow under the computer to keep it cool - but I have no episodes downloaded in the "Downloaded" folder, and I have mine on a laptop stand that allows for plenty of airflow.. I also have over 50gb of available space on the computer.. Idk what other specs could be relevant...

When will the M1 support additional monitors?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:37 AM PST

I just bought myself an additional monitor for work only to find out that my MacBook, in the year 2021, can't have more than 1 monitor.

    What an absolute shit show.

When is this going to be fixed?

Edit: Love the downvotes! 98% of all laptops support more than 1 monitor - brilliant stuff from Apple. Have to say the fact I've only got 2 ports also makes my life super easy.

    16" 2019 MBP vs 13" 2020 Intel MBP

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:21 PM PST

    Y'all,

I'm tech-savvy enough to have used Macs for 20 years, but not tech-savvy enough to make this decision.

The Contenders*: 16" 2019 MBP vs 13" 2020 Intel MBP (These are the only available options. Specs at bottom of post)

The Context: This will be a work laptop, bought by my employer. I've been using a 13" 2016 MBP for the past 3 years. The unique aspects of my work involve a lot of viewing (and on rare occasions making) videos, as well as some design work. But I'm also usually hooked up to 2 external monitors.

The Questions: How useful is the larger screen on a day to day basis? And aside from screen size, are there any reasons to consider getting the 2019 over the smaller 2020?

    Thank you!

    *2019 Specs:

    GPU: AMD Radeon Pro 5300M
    RAM: 16GB

    *2020 Specs

Workaround for overheating MacBooks using Google Meet

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 09:52 AM PST

Like a lot of people, I've had overheating issues when doing video calls using my MacBook 13" 2016. All the apps used for video calling usually overheat my device, especially when connecting my 4k monitor.

After some digging, I found out the Macs render graphical content at a higher resolution and then scale it down to achieve the Retina resolution. That's why when in Google Meet with 10 streams of video at a time, the CPU and GPU are under high load and the Macbook ramps up the fans and gets crazy hot.

I then came up with this workaround that I hope is useful for all the people out there with the same issues I have. In my experience Google Meet works better in Chromium-based browsers so, using Edge I created an application for the website, (Settings>Apps>Install).

In the applications folder in Finder, select the app, choose Get Info and select Open in Low Resolution.

When you reopen the app the text will appear a bit blurry but the image quality will be almost as good as before (as Meet works at a max resolution of 720p). Since I tried this my 2-hour meetings with more than 10 video streams have been flawless without the fans ramping up a single time.

Maybe a lot of people knew about this but I hope this will be useful for somebody :)

How NOT TO move data from old to new MacBook?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:22 PM PST

Hi guys, I have old MacBook, which has 40GB worth of "Others" which I do not want. I collected my M1 today, and I was so surprised to see that after few hours, MacBook decided to download it! Not only that, but iCloud actually OVERWROTE a folder I created (because I had the same one in iCloud). I was speechless. It wasn't much, only few files changed inside (it was GIT folder), but it was annoying as hell. Do I have to turn off iCloud at all, to not have that again? I wanted to use it to store some of my files there, but I do not need to move "trash", especially if I don't know how to delete it

    Is my data forever gone??

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 01:03 PM PST

So back in I believe 2013 I spilled water on my old MacBook (white ones that they don't make anymore)

After that spill I tried turning back on and it would load all the way but after it finish loading it would shut back down. I kind said forget it and left it alone for years.

I want to know if it's possible somehow to retrieve some photos that were on my desktop from that MacBook even though I can't personally get to it. I tried iCloud but my time stamp that I want to go back to is way too far. Any suggestions?

    How to treat a MacBook

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 12:47 PM PST

    Hey guys,

i got my first MacBook Air 13 (2020) and its the first notebook i ever owned. I am really happy with it but i have some questions.

    1. I never shut it down. I just put it into sleep mode. One time i did not use it for three days and then i actually shut it down. Is there any rules or pattern that i should follow?
    2. Is it normal that the battery loses 1-2% of battery after being in sleep mode for a couple of hours?
    3. The battery life is spectacular so i want to protect it as much as i can. I usually load it when its on 20% up to 85-90%. Is that fine?

PS: I really do not know anything about technology and it was a present i got so i am really cautious about it.

    Old MacBook

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 11:53 AM PST

I have an iPad and an iPhone for the wife and I. I have always went towards pc due to cost. I recently got a MacBook Pro off Kijiji on a trade to sync all our devices and possibly boost work productivity because my work does the same, apple phone and windows laptop.

I start to set it up and it keeps telling me it's too old. Am I missing something? The specs are way better than my laptop but this thing is crap! Incredibly slow. Can't even download any office apps because it's old? It actually works as well as my iPad gen 2. How? I didn't think switching over would be this confusing.

I must be missing something. My brain compute that I was duped into a colourful paper weight

I just received got a MacBook Air M1 and I want a monitor for it but I'm not exactly sure what kind of monitor I should get. I saw Apple sells one for like $2000 and that is a little out of my price range. I just want one that will utilize the hardware and have a really nice screen

Weird bug? Changing icon size or grid spacing on desktop causes icons to drift off-screen. (Macbook Air M1)
