Safari w/ Touch ID > Google Chrome Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:44 PM PST Okay y'all, the title says it all.... I was a hardcore chrome user on my mid 2014 MBP but now having the M1 MBA 16/512/8core I think apple finally won me over with safari... it feels super satisfying using the touch ID. I havent needed to use it for much else besides logging on to the computer... so by switching to safari I feel like im getting my moneys worth by using this nice feature as often as possible [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Mar 2021 10:36 PM PST Hello everyone, So I'm now at the age of my life where spending 150€ on MS Office hurts, but trying to get used to a new service is also not my ideal option. What are you guys using on your M1 machines? Online google services use up a lot of memory. I know we have pages built in, but it's another thing I'd have to learn. Right now I'm using MS 365 online through my school, but we aren't allowed to download offline and it can get pretty annoying. Ideally, I'd love the full office license and to not bother with any of that other stuff, but it's also quite pricey. My FIL says he paid 80€ for 5 licenses for MS office and they've "never expired" years later. I'm still waiting for the day when he tells me all his documents have been erased. I've read online you have 4-6 months after the sub ends to pay up, or your stuff gets deleted. There's no way my FIL bought 5 licenses for that price, he clearly just bought the online yearly sub for 5 devices and has just gotten lucky. Not sure if I should try this too. Open to all advice and opinions! PS: I'm a teacher, so I need Word, PowerPoint and sometimes Excel pretty frequently. [link] [comments]

M1 MacBooks getting a future update to support more than one external display? Posted: 11 Mar 2021 02:08 PM PST Hey! got my first M1 MBP a month ago. I am looking to get some adapters now and I'm aware that M1s do not support more than 1 external display although, you can have a workaround with DisplayLink adapters, but they're really REALLY expensive my question is- is it going to get patched one day? (if it's not hardware related and Apple is just blocking it for some reason, my guess, performance...) and we'll be able to use more than 1 external display like all of our intel MB bois? or I should spend my whole salary on of one of those stupid expensive adapters just to have better workflow at home? New M1 Mac Air - Dressing spilled on the keyboard Posted: 11 Mar 2021 01:24 PM PST Two days after buying a new M1 Air, a small bowl of dressing went splat on the keyboard. I cleaned it up as best I could but it's clearly down in between the keys. The laptop and keys all still function flawlessly 24 hours afterwards. I used minimal 85% isopropyl alcohol and compressed air to get as much out as I could. I have Applecare+ and am taking it in Saturday. What can I expect the repair bill to be? I'm hoping they can simply disassemble and clean it. [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Mar 2021 12:49 PM PST Hi guys, tried googling it but could not find an answer. What does exactly swap memory usage mean? And by that i want to ask, let's say my swap memory usage is 1gb , this means that the computer writes 1gb each second? [link] [comments]

2020 M1 Macbook Pro vs Surface Book 2? Posted: 11 Mar 2021 11:08 AM PST My Surface Pro 5 is on its last legs and I'm looking for a new computer that will last me through my last two years of high school and probably through college as well. I want to major in medicine and I'm wondering if the 2020 M1 Macbook Pro or the Microsoft Surface Book 2 would suit my needs better in medical school. The M1 is probably going to be faster and have better performance but on the other hand the Surface Book 2 has the ability to be turned into a tablet. Any advice would be appreciated, TIA [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 Mar 2021 09:42 AM PST I have several old hard drives that I would like to open and clean up and get all the data onto a new hard drive. Two of these are from old Mac's, one is from an old Toshiba laptop, and two are external hard drives. One external was used as the Time Machine for old Macs and the other was used on the Toshiba and Mac. Here's the issue: One of my old Mac's died from a bad hard drive (it died 6 weeks BEFORE my extended warranty ran out) and the Toshiba just crapped out all at once and I don't know if that was a virus or a hard drive issue or what. If I plug these into my brand new M1 MacBook Air am I at risk of corrupting this new hard drive? If so, how do I check the old hard drives without putting this laptop in danger? What's your favorite USB dock? Posted: 11 Mar 2021 08:08 AM PST I just bought a Macbook Air M1 and waiting for it to arrive. I'm looking at buying a USB dock but a little overwhelmed by the choices of brands and prices and have even read some reviews on some that are slow or just not good. I want one that will have a few USB A, C, SD card, HDMI (and possibly ethernet but can do without). My budget is about $100. Does anyone have a favorite one that they recommend? Display Scaling on Current Mac Posted: 11 Mar 2021 07:17 AM PST So, now I'm on the market for a new laptop. Now still using my ThinkPad. Display scaling works on my dumb Toshiba 1080p TV, as Windows can scale the GUI on any display out there. However, I remember quite clearly that Mac never let me do that when I had it back in 2010-2014. SwitchResX and many other tools didn't help. the OS just wouldn't give me the scaling options ala Retina display. So, on modern Macbooks, does the scaling now work on any display? If not, will SwitchResX or something like that help? Because I need it almost everyday as I spend a lot streaming through my laptop connected to hdmi, and for now I don't really need a smart tv or tv box so I intend to keep it this way. Thank you. TLDR; Can current/modern Macbooks scale ala Retina on any display? [link] [comments]
Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:55 AM PST Hello. So I've been having a lot of trouble with my 2017 MacBook Pro. Over the past few years I've taken it in 3 times for pretty much the same issue- when running either a small game or a video call software, the computer heats up very quickly and then dies. It'll immediately begin restarting and dying upon trying to load anything up. I just took it in to the Apple store to have it looked at and they're first testing if it's a firmware issue (there's some kind of SSD update they can do). However, I fear it's again a hardware issue and it'll need to be sent in once more to replace whatever they choose to replace (last time it was a bunch of things. That was in July- so the repairs only lasted about 7 months before the problem resurfacing). However, my Apple care has now expired and I'm left with a dilemma. I looked at my past receipts and am pretty sure the repairs will cost ~$500, and at this point I'm not even sure if it's worth trying to pay it since this thing just keeps having issues again after a few months or so. I've not even had the laptop for 4 full years so it's a little disappointing- I've read these things are supposed to last like 7 years and I fully expected this to at least get me through undergrad. I guess I'm just posting to try and solicit some advice. Is this thing worth trying to fix again at this point? Is this normal for MacBooks just to have hardware issues like this that keep persisting? I don't abuse the laptop or really do much intensive work with it at all, so I'm confused as to how it keeps happening unless they failed to fix the real issue the first times around. Any advice would be appreciated. It just feels hard to shell out another 500 when I could pay 300 on top of it for a new laptop instead that might not need another 500 maintenance in a few months. Hello everyone! I have a small question! It's related to the M1 Macbook Air! Posted: 11 Mar 2021 06:15 AM PST Hello everyone! I have a small question! It's related to the M1 Macbook Air! So, I plan to get the M1 Macbook Air, but there's a small question I have. Would it work with the video editor called Olive? I am a small YouTuber, and I would be using OBS and StreamLabs to record videos and stream on Youtube, and maybe in the future Twitch. I would be getting the M1 Macbook Air with 8 GB of Ram, 7 Core GPU, and 256 GB of storage! Would you think it'd work with Olive? Or would you maybe recommend getting a different laptop? Thanks! Oh, and I almost forgot! Here's the link to Olive: https://olivevideoeditor.org/ | I would be playing games like GTA 5 (GTA V), Roblox, Rocket League, and when I wouldn't be playing I'd be browsing with many tabs open or in Google Meets! I would mostly use it to do homework and research though, opening Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, PDFs, and more! [link] [comments]
What is the best mouse to use on MacBook (NOT Magic Mouse)? Posted: 11 Mar 2021 05:18 AM PST Hi guys, I am looking for a good mouse for MacBook. What I need is: -good battery life -connecting to MacBook without dongle -ability to have USABLE back and forward buttons on Mac I have bought Magic Mouse, but the sensor of the mouse is absolutely tragic. I have never owned mouse that is so inaccurate (and I used to buy some £5 mouses, and they were much better!). I don't know what is it. I thought that my MM2 is faulty, so I replaced that but it is still the same. Un-u-sable. Absolutely terrible. I like gestures, but not so much to use this terrible mouse. So now I am looking for some normal, bluetooth mouse to use without a dongle, which will have good battery life. [link] [comments]
