    Help buying Refurbished MacBook

    Posted:

Hi not sure if I can post this here, but worth a try.

I'm looking to buy a Refurb MacBook. My last one from the late 2009 just died (battery exploded). So I bought another from Newegg, Early 2011 MacBook Pro, not realizing that I can't update to BigSur or have much Apple support if needed. It also had an overhearing issue when I used Zoom.

So I'm hoping that someone could give me a suggestion on one to buy. I'm trying to stay in the $600-$700, atleast 13inches and 8gb of RAM.

Any help is much appreciated! 🙏🏾

Extremely high amount of data written (over a half a terabyte in day)

    Posted:

I'm not sure what's going on with my MacBook Air 8gb ram 256 gb M1. It's on 5-6 GB of swap most of the time and on DriveDx it says that the data written is at 1.6 TB. I got this MacBook on Sunday (about 4 days ago). I've only been doing light chrome browsing, discord messaging, and some Zoom meetings occasionally. It was at 1 TB this morning but right now it's at 1.6 TB.

Is there something wrong with my MacBook? Should I return it? I'm shocked that it's at 1.6 TB after just 4 days of light use.

Virtualization software on early 2008 Macbook

    Posted:

I have been tinkering with my early 2008 Macbook (4,1) lately -- adding an SSD and 6gb RAM -- which runs Lion (10.7.5), and I have downloaded some virtualization software. Specifically: VirtualBox 4.3, VMWare Fusion 6.0.4, and Parallels Desktop 9. And I have found pros and cons to each of these products:

    • VirtualBox 4.3 seems to have a hard-coded limit to the amount of RAM an image can use (3.5gb). I installed Lubuntu 18.04 on VirtualBox, and I would find my the images often got corrupted or unstable when running an initial "apt-get upgrade". I tried a few distros, none of them seemed very stable on VBox. Oh, also the Guest Additions thing with VirtualBox was a nightmare. Guest Additions on VBox is the way to share your file system with the VM. On Fusion, this is much more simplified and it's very easy to share your host's directories with the VM. I believe VBox 4.3 is the last version that runs on OS X 10.7.5.
    • VMWare Fusion 6.0.4 has an awesome user interface. I went with Linux Mint 19.3 (cinnamon) 32 bit. Fusion allows me to use as much RAM as I want, but even when supplying 4gb to Fusion, I feel this VM runs more slowly than the VirtualBox image. With Fusion, I have a harder time installing an image. I tried to install the kali-linux-2021.1-installer-i386.iso, which failed at the "Select and install software" phase. For some reason, I feel like Fusion will attempt to install an ISO, even if the hardware is incompatible, and fail .. whereas VirtualBox won't let you try to install an incompatible ISO. Also, Fusion was very easy to setup openssh compared to Virtualbox (with VBox, I found that there were more configuration steps than just running "apt-get install openssh-server"). I believe VirtualBox 6.0.4 is the last version that runs on OS X 10.7.5.
    • Parallels Desktop 9. I just found this somewhere on the web, and have only started testing it out. Parallels 9 seems limited in the ISOs it can detect (for example, I tried to install Kali Linux via ISO, to which Parallels said it could not detect an operating system. But then you can force it to run the ISO, and eventually suceeded!). I have noticed some instabilities with the other ISOs I was able to install (Linux Mint and Xubuntu). Kali seems to be working, but I just installed it so I will know more later. It seems pretty snappy! Just need to make some tweaks to the configuration. I did confirm that this is the last version of Parallels that is compatible with OS X Lion (10.7.5).

Regarding distros, I am also confused about whether only 32-bit Linux images are supported. I know the "core 2 duo" Macbooks are 64-bit systems, but I have read online that only 32-bit images are supported. Additionally, I believe in terms of ISOs, you want to go with an i386 image if it's available, because there's a better chance of it working.

With that being said, can anyone recommend some Linux distros they have used on their 2008 Macbook? Do you have experience with these virtualization products? Would I be better off loading up the image on a USB drive and booting into it? Would that save me some headaches working with these outdated virtualization products? Any advice or experience welcomed. Hopefully my limited experience and writeup can be useful to others!

Question on ‘work’ MacBook Pro battery/charge treatment (2015 model)

    Posted:

I was graciously given a MacBook Pro 15" for work use. It is a 2015 model running Catalina (can't upgrade to Big Sur since work printers don't support it yet) but it's a 2.2 GHz i7 with a cycle count of 600.

If I'm at my desk 99% of the time, should I leave it plugged in? Should I let it run out throughout the day and then charge it back? I'd like it to last me a few years if possible. It's a great computer.

(I run Chrome, TEAMS, and Zoom amongst other programs so some of those, like Zoom, can make it a bit hot)

Better ways to manage Memory on M1 MBA?

    Posted:

I recently bought an M1 MBA, 8 gigs ram, 256 GB, and right now I mainly use it for android development, flutter, browsing, and Spotify. Since the android studio is not native to M1 right now, I understand some lag in the app but often my MacBook pops up this wizard saying "Out of memory". I don't know if there is a solution to that, or if it's bad/dangerous to my mac in any way but it was something that had me concerning. My work usually comprises of the android studio with the iOS emulator, safari with 5-7 tabs and that's it. If you know any ways to manage the memory in a better way, it'd be appreciated. Thanks!

    Can a MacBook run games?

    Posted:

I have a MacBook Pro for my school and was wondering if a Mac can run Total War 3 kingdoms and/or Crusader Kings 3. I have the Macbook Pro 13" M1 chip with 8gb of RAM. I know that Macs aren't ideal for gaming but was just wondering. I am fine with playing at at least 40 fps and low settings.

    Compressed air liquid/frost

    Posted:

Second question in a week... sorry.

Used compressed air to attempt to clean some crumbs out of my keyboard after a colleague spilt them on the keys yesterday.

Thought this was a good idea (used a 'keyboard safe' can) until it sprayed super cold liquid out onto the keys and the very bottom of the screen. It evaporated almost instantly as I think it was just condensation. Am I likely to receive water damage/corrosion from this and is there any east way of checking (during a pandemic where apple shops aren't open)? Nothing seemed to change and no keys have stuck so far.

    Thanks!

Looking for M1 Macbook Air Power Usage comparisons for 8gb vs 16gb RAM variants

    Posted:

Has anyone seen any comparisons made between the 8GB and 16GB RAM versions of the M1 macbook air with respect to battery life and power draw?

I want to buy the 7 gpu core M1 macbook air but think the 16GB RAM will be necessary within ~4 years. Just don't want to accidentally end up with a laptop with drastically lower battery life as a result.

Do Macbooks randomly ask you to log in, for example to access websites?

    Posted:

Hi. I'm not sure if this belongs here. It might be a weird question but I really need an answer.

Is there any chance that once you are logged in the MacBook it would still ask you to log in if you want to access a website? (Also sorry for my english, it's not my first language)

To add some info: it didn't look like the regular screen that would appear when you turn on a MacBook. It looked like there was a red or pink login button and two blank boxes, one for username, one for password.

    Thank you.

Need help with recovering SSD data

    Posted:

Hi to all, looking for some help as the logic board on my macbook needs to be replaced.

However i dont wanna replace it as i just need to get the data out from the SSD. Is it possible to remove the ssd and then plug it into another working macbook? Or is there a sort of SSD to USB converter so that i can get the data out sort of like getting stuff out of a thumbdrive? Im not sure what the converter might look like or if its easy to find as i hardly work with macbook hardware.

I'd be more familiar and confident with the conventional mobo ssd and stuff like that.

    Thanks in advance!

Would the bookbook sleeve zippers destroy the macbook?

    Posted:

    product link

so im currently looking to buy a macbook and though i already decided on what model i want but im still considering what protection should i get for it

my current criteria is right now - needs to look at least some what decent - can be used while in the sleeve or have enough area for use on the sleeve - the zippers must not scratch the mac - have at least scratch protection (bonus points for corner protection)

so as you can see, the product that ive linked above got 2/3 right except for the zippers. Honestly i really hope that the zippers are atleast not strong enough to scratch the mac cause the case looks really beautiful but the product images so far shows no zippers scratch protection which honestly really defeats the purpose of having a sleeve

any help would be great (or any other product recommendations that fits my criteria above) thanks

EDIT: this video mentioned something about there being a rubber tip on the zipping part of the zipper, wonder if its still on the newer models or its not the only reason why zippers scratches the macbook

Difference keyboard new MacBook Pros and MBA 2017

    Posted:

My first MBA's keyboard (2013 model) was incredible. I could type so quickly and accurately. When that gave up the ghost (I bought it second-hand), I bought my current machine, MacBook Air (13-inch, 2017). The keyboard was immediately a problem. Though it doesn't suffer from the notorious butterfly keyboard issues (those were on later models), the keys are much heavier, clunkier, and I make far more errors because of strokes not registering. I am slower as well, which is frustrating given how my typing was so effortless on an earlier model. I kept the machine because there was no reason to let it go.

I will be in the market for a new MacBook Pro this summer, probably around the time of the WWDC, and am wondering if the new MacBooks have the same light, excellent keyboards as I was used to in the past? I haven't been to an Apple store in months because of the pandemic, so I haven't been able to touch a different machine. But overall, I hate the keyboard on the 2017 MBA and hoping for a better one. Anyone else have similar feelings about that keyboard and/or feel a difference in keyboards post-butterfly keyboard? Which should machine should I beware of?

    Thinking of buying a 2012 11" MBA

    Posted:

    Looking for some guidance.

I currently have the 2019 13" MBA which is great, and I would not get rid of, but I am looking for something more portable I can take around to web surf, video call, study when I'm out and about or traveling.

Was thinking of going the iPad route but I like to have multiple windows open, like Zoom, notes, safari, or watching school videos and following along on a PDF, and the iPad just seems annoying for that.

Would an older 11" MBA work for me? Or are the tech specs just so outdated it's not worth it?

Need a new device -- '19 MBP or current MB Air?

    Posted:

    Hey all,

My old 2014 Macbook Air is starting to give up the ghost on me and I'm in the market for a new one. Apple currently has the 2019 Macbook Pro up on their refurbished store for $939, or a new Macbook Air (base model) for $999.

Not particularly tech savvy here, though I can readily notice they both have 8 gb of memory, while the 2021 Air has 256GB of storage to the refurbished Pro's 128GB.

Any guidance on which is the better deal? Thanks!

Is it worth replacing my MacBook Pro 16 inch (2019) keyboard for one single dent keycap?

    Posted:

Hi, this may be a question that is hard for me to decide. So I accidentally dent my top arrow keycap over a keyboard sticker and there was a small crack on the side from taking it out. Long story short, I went to the apple store and the good news is they replaced my small cracked keycap for free. The bad news is, as I was pressing down the keycap it still feels dented (it's not as bad as before and it's barely noticeable that it's dented) . Anyways, the employee told me there may be a problem with its mechanism inside and they will have to replace the entire keyboard. I'm still under warranty so they told me they can replace it for free. Yes, for free. That's why I'm considering it.

Now I'm a little worried because I don't know if it's worth the shot to replace my entire keyboard for just a small issue with my dented top arrow key. I have trust issues with repairment and I worry if I give it to an apple technician to get it fix, more issues will happen to the keyboard.

    Here are the images below:

[picture of the height difference of my top and bottom arrow key as seen in this perspective (shows its dented) ](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1e4ov_49gpdM38o4PSctGa-9SvJYQhhn9/view?usp=drivesdk)

[Picture of the other side that looks normal, because only the right side of my top arrow key is dented. ](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dqczWwAxzPYS1guAkAisKxN-BVm-8up5/view?usp=drivesdk)
