How to enable "Unlock with Apple Watch" with non compatible MacBook Posted: 08 Feb 2021 01:41 AM PST I own a 15" MBP retina early 2013. Very fast and well working macbook. But, not compatible with BigSur. Great tips in the r/BigSurPatcher and it could perfectly work with BigSur. Doesn't something like a patch exists to make unlock with Apple Watch also work on this device? Very nice feature I already like on my 2019 iMac. [link] [comments]
Time Machine backup failed: 2 volumes same name. Posted: 08 Feb 2021 01:40 AM PST I bought a MacBook Pro in Oct 2020 with Mac OS Catalina. I was having some issues so I brought it back to factory settings. Little did I know that when I did that, Catalina gave me a second volume - Mac HD - Data, so now there's 3 volumes: Mac HD, Mac HD Data, Mac HD Data. Well I finally got around to buying an external drive to do my Time Machine backups. Low and behold the back up failed because I have 2 volumes with the same name! Ugh! Every website I've viewed about this issue says to back up and then do a clean restore.. The problem is that I can't do a backup to begin with. Is there any other way I can delete this extra volume without losing anything instead of a clean restore? How would I know which volume is safe to delete? One of the volumes has a house on it, the other has nothing. The one with the house attached doesn't allow me to delete because it's "in use". I noticed when I save anything, the memory increases on both volumes! Ugh! Thx for your help! [link] [comments]

M1 gives bin/sh error when installing ohmyzsh. Please help! Posted: 07 Feb 2021 06:57 PM PST Hello everybody! I am trying to setup my m1 for coding & development & facing a lot of challenges with regard to this. I tweeted a thread about the resources I could find on the internet for this here. https://twitter.com/krishnaa404/status/1356834182262099969?s=20 Right now I am trying to install ohmyzsh as mentioned in this article https://twitter.com/krishnaa404/status/1358108937426526209?s=20 & I am getting the error message "sh: #!/bin/sh: No such file or directory". Have attached the screenshot. Can anybody help me figure this out please. Thanks a lot! [link] [comments]

Posted: 07 Feb 2021 07:13 PM PST Hi all, I just got the M1 Macbook Air and have experienced sound distortion happens when I try speak screen feature. Sound quality is fine everywhere else. I have spoken to Apple and have tried everything but nothing fixed the problem. They told me I could replace my Mac with another one but I don't feel this will fix the issue. I have recorded the issue , please follow link down below. I have tried changing the voice and all that but same thing, no luck. My 2012 Mac does a better job at speak screen than the 2020 model. Any suggestions are welcomed. Thanks [link] [comments]

Displaying Macintosh HD on Desktop in Big Sur Posted: 07 Feb 2021 10:08 PM PST I just got a new Macbook Pro. I'm a little embarrassed that I can't figure out how to display the Macintosh HD. I tried googling, but it seems to be from the older versions of the MacOS. TIA. [link] [comments]

Stuck updating to Big Sur 11.2 Posted: 07 Feb 2021 09:20 PM PST I tried to update my 2015 macbook pro to 11.2 but it just gets stuck at less than a minute remaining. eventually it says error and pops a screen looking for a book disc but nothing shows up. I restarted and the same thing happened. How do i either cancel the update or get it to work EDIT: for anyone else with this problem I believe I found the solution: https://ibhuman.com/an-error-occurred-preparing-the-software-update-macbook-pro/ It looks the problem is I ran out of space while installing, despite mac os thinking I had enough storage before I started the update. So anyone who is going to update, I had 40 gigs before I download it but I guess that isn't enough. This is a huge problem and I don't know how Apple let a problem like this happen. I would have to basically delete almost everything just to update. [link] [comments]

What causes TERRIBLE performance prior to wiping/reinstalling? Posted: 07 Feb 2021 08:03 AM PST I have always had a yearly ritual of transferring off old files to external storage and wiping my MacBook Pro and reinstalling the latest OS. I ended up going 2.5 years without doing this, and I upgraded to Big Sur and my Mac became almost unusable. Battery life was horrendous, the fans would kick on by just surfing the web, there was major lag with even the most basic tasks, etc. I just wiped the drive and reinstalled the OS and everything is great again. What exactly is it that makes the OS/hardware perform like this? Is it based on left over system files over time? Library files? Are there files I can routinely safely delete to prevent this from happening? Thanks. [link] [comments]

Newbie questions: Window tiling tips wanted, plus file extensions and levels up Posted: 07 Feb 2021 01:35 PM PST Sorry, I did search for this but I guess my google-fu was weak and I didn't find good answers. I love my macbook air. I got a 2011 model, and just got the new one a few days ago. Haven't used another laptop since getting my first. I love the form factor, I love the speed, and on the new one there's a lot more to love. In every other part of my life I use android or PC, and this is a big upgrade in terms of OS (my old hasn't been able to keep up for a bit as its had a full hard drive, and not even sure newer OS would have been supported.) So there's a couple things that I really miss or find more convenient on PC and was wondering if I'm just not using the best approach. Any tips?
I always get frustrated with tiling. Suppose I know I'm going to be inputting data or text into a browser window for a bit, and I'll want to alternate between a few other things on the other side. On a PC, I'd drag my browser window over to the side and half-screen it. When it pops up with options to fill the other half with a second window, I'd say nah bro, and select no app. On that half of the screen, it will just show my desktop. Then I might open a calculator or a Telegram chat or whatever in that window for now, then when I'm ready to open another window, I'll open a new tab on the left half, pop it out, and put it on the right half. If I do this on Mac, I encounter multiple issues. First, when I half-tile the window, it demands I select another window to fill the right side of the screen. That's not ideal, but it's a minor frustration.. after all, I'm going to fill it in a moment or I wouldn't be working this way. So I decide fine, I'll open a new browser tab and put it on the right side. Except I can't, because if I don't select an app to fill the right side of the screen, I get exited out of tile mode. So then I tile again, and just select an app I don't really want on the right half, thinking I'll replace it. Then I open new tab on Chrome, and pull the tab out... and oops no, it opens fullscreen in a new desktop. So then I think I'll shrink it and maybe it will go back... but no, it just stays there. So it seems like I just need top plan ahead. I have to open the new tab, then pop it out, then tile, then select the second tab. Am I correct, is that the only way to do it? Or am I just missing some alternate features/approaches? Edit: I had initially intended to ask only the first question, I admit I didn't google the other two before writing them, I'll do that while I'm waiting for a reply and update if I find answers. 2) Extensions When putting course materials together for students, I often upload both a .pdf and a .docx. I guess I just get confused with all the options. Yes, I've been using a mac for a decade now, but I still don't have it straight. On some window versions, I can right click and make "extensions" one of the things that shows up in the file table, which is perfect. Then I drag that column to the right of the filename and we're good. But other times, I can only add "kind" and sort by kind, which takes up a lot of extra space and still doesn't actually show the extension, and sometimes .doc and .pages show up under just "documents" and when I'm in that version of the finder window, I don't have the option to right click and show extensions. But also, in that context, whatever it is (haven't figured it out yet) I can't seem to change the display to be the way that allows extensions to show.. Again, I suspect I'm just complicating things or failing to notice a simple pattern, but... if I always want to see the extension on a file, is there a way to reliably see it? 3) Navigating I have such a hard time figuring out basic navigation. I realized a long time ago that organizing by "recent" was tricking me because for several minutes the most recent files would be on the very bottom under "no date" instead of on the very top under "today..." that took me a bit but I'm used to it after so many years on my old laptop. Hopefully my new faster one won't have that issue. But I have a hard time navigating up my file tree without using the search function. Say I open Finder. My "favorites" has AirDrop (which I never use, being the only Apple product in the house), Recents (which I rely on a lot of the time), Applications (which I never use because I just use the mouse gesture to open my apps), desktop (which I never use because I just show my desktop again with a touchpad gesture), documents, and downloads, which again I never use because I usually download something either to a desktop file called "okay to delete" or I move it to a more permanent place, because I like to stay organized. So... say I have a Microsoft One Drive folder under my user account. How do I get there? My current approach, which I consider an undesirable workaround, is to go into the search bar and type my username. But surely, if I'm in "documents" or "desktop," my user director is just one file level up... shouldn't that just be one click away? Am I wrong? That's just one example, I often wish I could go up one file level and I don't seem to be able to, unless I just traveled down the file tree and then I can use my back button to get back up. Sorry for the newbie questions. Apparently I'm entitled to a professional tour so I suppose I could just use that, but it seems like a pretty stressful social interaction and I'm sure I'd forget all of my questions and just watch them do impressive things. Thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to read this and share a reply! [link] [comments]
