Apple releases macOS Big Sur 11.2.1 with MacBook Pro charging bug fix

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 08:34 PM PST

Is it me or is updating macOS Big Sur so big and slow compared to older macOSes (e.g., Mojave v10.14)?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 07:55 PM PST

I mean minor versions upgrades like from v11.1 to v11.2 and v11.2 to v11.2.1). The patches are SO big (GB sizes) and take so long to install/upgrade after downloading.

Even an old 2012 MacBook Pro, with its Mojave v10.14 and earlier, were way faster to upgrade to newer versions compared to a late 2020 MacBook Pro (Intel i7, 32 GB of RAM, 2 TB SSD, etc.). Was Catalina v10.15 like this too since I never used it? Do the new M1 MacBooks have this issue too?

Thank you for reading and hopefully answering. :)

    Big Sur 11.2.1 update issues

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:53 PM PST

Hello, I am trying to update to latest Big Sur. However after 6 hours system is stuck in this status.

I am running new M1 MacBook Air with 256GB.

Strangely enough I had same (or similar) issue with 11.2 updated recently. System was not able to finish install even using Restore app with option to install latest version did not help (at time I did not have proper Time Machine backup - I had Mac only for few weeks so did not considered it so important and most of my work are only documents which are replicated to iCloud). After several calls with support it ended with clean install and I had to setup everything again.

It is really annoying that new hardware is not able to upgrade to new software.

I find strange that I got info from support that there may be some issue with one of apps casing this. In my view if there is issue with app new OS updated should broke app and not system.

But still I would like to pinpoint possible issue. So here is more or less list of apps I am using. I would be interested to know whether you think that some of those apps could cause it:

Bitdefender (this is one of apps with access to almost everything in system) Clean My Mac (also one of apps with strong accessories across system) Nord VPN Freedom Rescue Time Viscosity

Above apps in my view can have some access to system functionalities. Rest is normal office programs:

Microsoft Office 2016 Microsoft Teams Things 3 Setapp (several apps from there) VASSAL Probably few more I am not able to remember now.

I would really appreciate some advice/insight in to what could cause this. Because it is highly frustrating.

    Thank you

Why I'm choosing to stay on Mojave for as long as I can

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 07:51 PM PST

Just read this blogpost from Michael Tsai: https://mjtsai.com/blog/2021/02/09/remaining-issues-new-in-catalina/

This is 10.15.7, so more than a year of updates since Catalina was released. It's clearly still significantly more buggy than High Sierra or Mojave. In previous years I'd expect this level of quality in a .1 or .2 update, but it looks like this is the new normal with Apple.

I have Big Sur installed on a separate system for work-related reasons and my experience with it has been similarly bad. Maybe it's better than 10.15.0 was but it's definitely worse than Mojave in terms of general bugginess. And the reports I've been reading from around the internet seem to validate that. Not to mention that the UI redesign is something I'd charitably describe as one step forward, two steps back.

I don't know how long I can hold out on Mojave. It's really disheartening that a lot of apps have already dropped support for it even though it was the latest version of macOS just 16 months ago, not even two years. Apple's decision to start releasing a new version of macOS every year was a terrible one, both for compatibility and the mac's software quality. I hate to be so negative but I hit so many Apple-related bugs on a daily basis now that I just need to vent, and at least blogposts like the one I linked to let me know that I'm not alone in this.

    Chrome and 4k YouTube

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:58 AM PST

I'm not sure if the mass majority knows, but Chrome is now supporting VP9 hardware decoding on macOS (Unsure about whether its specific to Intel or Apple Silicon), which GREATLY decreases its reliance on the CPU when 4k Video is playing on YouTube.

Note that it is still an experimental feature and crashes may occur.

    To enable it, go to:

    1. chrome://flags
    2. Search and enable #videotoolbox-vp9-decoding
    3. Restart Chrome

By doing this, Chrome should have a much lower impact on battery by using much less of the CPU when you're playing 4k YouTube content on your Mac.

Prior to this, Chrome and all Chromium browsers would use > 100% of the CPU to play 4K on YouTube. This is NOT ideal because it greatly reduces battery life. Normally, the only way to get around this is through the h264ify extension, which prevents 4k play back on YouTube.

Update: it is available for either Intel or AS Mac's.

Update 2: As r/ba_naaan mentioned, it might not be helpful to those who have older Macs.

I hate the newest iTunes and this is the biggest reason why

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 07:00 PM PST

The search function demands you look at songs from a grid view which doesn't show the many sorting columns you would get in the Songs view. It makes it so hard to edit a library. Ugh. Is there a way to downgrade?!

Big Sur "The volume cannot be downgraded"

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:48 AM PST

I'm having issues with Bluetooth on my 2019 Mac Pro, even since the 11.2.1 update. I just went to reinstall from recovery, and once the drive was unlocked I got the error "This volume cannot be downgraded".

So I figured the Recovery partition might still be on 11.2 vs the boot drive on 11.2.1, went ahead and did Internet Recovery, still get the same error.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Hello I need an app for cloud file managing that can be found on ipad and macos. I found multiple apps that either work on macos only or ipad only. I was hoping to find one app that works on both devices. It would be better if it was also free.

Does Macbook pro silicon m1 support Samsung monitor C49J890DKU

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:47 AM PST

    Hi,

For work I got the Macbook Pro with the new Silicon M1 processor. I started with two dell monitors and sadly found out that the m1 didn't support two monitors. So now I am looking for an alternative and i hoped the samsung monitor could be that.

So are there any of you guys that know if the m1 supports the Samsung C49J890DKU monitor?

External disk not recognised on MacBook. Works fine on iMac

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:18 PM PST

Hi Reddit, I'm stumped on this one. I have an external Samsung SSD drive on my MBP that's been working great for months. Accidentally lost power a couple of days ago and since then I have not been able to get it to work... the strange thing is, it works perfectly on my iMac. Here's what I've tried:

    • Tried both USB slots. No change.
    • Looked up drive in Disk Util. It doesn't show up at all.
    • Installed latest updates to the OS - 10.15.7 (19H512). No difference.
    • Put two different USB drives (WD MyBook and a thumb drive) into the other slots. Worked fine. So it seems that USB is working on the MBP.
    • Rebooted (cold and warm) the MBP. No change.
    • Reset the SMC on MBP. No change.
    • Moved the disk to iMac. Also running 10.15.7 (19H512). Worked immediately.
    • Reformatted the disk using iMac + Disk Util. Still works fine.
    • Plugged in to MBP. No change.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here? It seems like the disk is not even coming up on USB on the MBP, but it works great on iMac. Any logs I can look at or any other hints for how to fix? This is so strange!

Is it me or does Apple's Time Machine's back ups get corrupted after using them for a very long time (years)?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 09:04 PM PST

Earlier today, I had a Time Machine's back up go bad that macOS Mojave v10.4.6 told me it couldn't fix after it ran fsck_hfs in the background (was wondering why it couldn't mount and made my old 13" MBP slow). This happened before years ago with older macOS version (can't remember which one -- maybe v10.12 or v10.8). For both incidents, I had to reformat the USB2 external HDD to restart a brand new back up. :(

Question about having two accounts on MacOS / Big Sur.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:32 AM PST

I have two accounts on my Mac, Work and Home. I rarely go into my Home one during work hours but it's open in the background. I was wondering if there was any effects of having it open? Will my other account slow down if it is? Should I actually log out of one account for most of the day?

    Thanks!

Battery draining with Big Sur 11.2

    Posted: 09 Feb 2021 06:16 PM PST

Hi, I'm having trouble with my Macbook Pro (2017, 13'').

I've been having issues with my battery for several months: I charge my battery up to 100%, then when I put it to sleep (eg: I close the computer) and after a couple of hours, the computer gets hot as if it had been working hard and the battery is empty.

I have tried a lot of things: I have done the "tricks" on settings (turning off Hand Off and Power Nap, etc), I have reseted the SMC and the PRAM, I have checked for running processes on Activity Monitor... Well, I have even taken my laptop to Apple: they have changed the battery, the keyboard, and the monitor. Nothing has worked.

I found I am not the only one having this problem. This is very annoying. Has anyone found the solution?

PS: I got Big Sur 11.2, updated it yesterday. There are websites advising to wait for a couple of days after updating the MacOS and claiming that this might be causing the battery draining, but I discard that, sine I've been having the problem for months.
