M1 Air auto keyboard backlight not working?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 06:04 PM PST

Doesn't come on at all in a pitch black room, has come on a few times but very very dim, almost not visible. Works fine with the slider and the setting to adjust backlight in low light is checked on. Has anyone with an M1 air noticed this? Not sure if it's a bug or some defective sensor on my unit that I just picked up yesterday

Please help Im afraid my mac is going to explode

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:04 PM PST

My laptop is only 2 years old and theres been no noteworthy incident with it. I saw a scary article about a mac exploding so out of curiosity I checked my own mac for any swelling and saw this. Just the slightest bit out on half of the back of the mac and when u press down it depresses a bit and makes a click. Am i being paranoid because I have a history of that. Or is my battery really going to explode. The most notable thing that could make a battery swell would be maybe 2 weeks ago I left it in the car for 20 min when it was like 75 outside but that car wasnt like steaming when I got in, just like warm. It doesn't get very hot and sure the fan goes off but not that often. It gets warm occasionally but like never enough to melt my plastic case or hurt me or anything and it rarely gets beyond warm. I put a link to the vids and a pic. Also it took a 2.5 foot fall about 2 months ago but it landed on its corner and I throughly inspected and either I didn't notice or it wasnt there. I really checked it post fall and it seemed to be fine. Please help im tripping and I cant tell if this is an anxiety attack or I should panic. Im a student and I dont have the money or time to even take my laptop in. I have 4 midterms so ill be pulling 2 all nighters and I'll need my laptop for basically 48 hours straight but now I'm afraid to use it and having like a stress breakdown. Oh and 1 months ago I left it in direct sunlight from a window on a hot day for a while and I had no idea how bad that was. This is the first laptop anyone in my family has ever had so we didn't know how terrible that can be for it. It got pretty hot and it was for like 2 hours. Also i dont have to tools or knowledge to open it myself. https://imgur.com/gallery/447cW3B

iMessage never shows texts with security codes

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:01 PM PST

I have a new Mac M1 and everything works great. However, I've realized that whenever I recieve a text containing a security code (for say logging into a website) I never get the text on my mac. I get it on my phone but not mac. No issues whatsoever with other texts.

Any ideas how to fix this so I can receive texts with security codes on my mac?

Got my M1 MacBook Air about a week ago. I can't compare it to anything because it's my first laptop. All I can say is that everything is so snappy and responsive and I haven't plugged it in since Saturday. Great stuff!

MacBook stuck on “startup disk” page

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 09:31 PM PST

Hi, I was trying to upgrade my MacBook to the macOS Big Sur but it says "an error occurred preparing the software update" and then kept stuck on the "startup disk" page. My startup disk won't load. I tried to restart it but turned out to be the same. What can I do without losing all my files?

    Should I get this deal?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:25 PM PST

I have a chance to buy a 13 inch MacBook Pro with touchbar 2016 for $800 (Canadian). The battery cycle is 1050 and there's no usb c charging cord only the Power Brick.

I think I have a chance to talk them down on the price. I'm really on the fence about this, but what do you guys think? Should I go for it? And what's a reasonable price for Macbook with these conditions?

Sold my iMac - Transitioning to multiple Macbooks on a dock - Magic Keyboard and Mouse?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:55 PM PST

Sold my iMac - Transitioning to multiple Macbooks on a dock connected to a monitor and USB C Hub for desktop/office use - Will Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse be of use?

I want it to be as seamless as possible - wife and I plug in our laptops to the dock with the USB C Hub connecting everything - Monitor etc - once plugged in the keyboard/mouse recognize which laptop is connected and no other steps.

I've read that this is not feasible with the Apple Magic Keyboard and Mouse and I'll have to pair it each time - is that correct? What are the next best options?

M1 battery life under real world use

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:53 PM PST

Has anyone used the M1 13 inch Macbook Pro in a film or video production scenario?

I would love to hear you thoughts specifically about battery life. How does the battery hold up over a 10 or 12 hour production day without being plugged into an AC outlet?

I'm not talking about the web browsing or watching youtube videos, I'm talking about offloading media from RED or Alexa cameras, working in Davinci Resolve or Adobe Premiere, how long can the battery last under those tasks?

I primarily use my Macbook Pro (13 inch, Late 2011) for spreadsheets at work, which over the past few years have become unbearably slow. Will upgrading the RAM from 4GB to 16GB solve this?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 12:04 PM PST

edit: I have had an SSD for years and it was also at 16gb RAM for a while back around 2015 but i think what happened was I swapped that RAM over to my mac mini at home. Based on responses though I'm going to shell out the $60 for RAM, put off buying a new work laptop for a few more years.

16 inch MacBook Pro...what type of stuff should I get for it?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 07:18 PM PST

So, my school is giving me a 16 inch MacBook Pro and I'm curious as to what y'all recommend me get for it. I'm talking backpack, hub, all that. I've got a case and a screen protector in my Amazon cart. Is it worth it to get a screen protector though?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:39 PM PST

I had a coat on and and spilled a drink over on my macbook with my arm (luckily there was a keyboard cover)and i flipped and snatched it up very fast. sudden motion sensor kicked in i think? its dry, everything seems ok, and my windows partition will work, but i cant get mac os to start. I used a partition manager program on windows and it says that the files are ok, does anyone know how i can get mac OS to work again? this is my old macbook and it has a broken screen, and i have to select macOS at startup, but cant see the screen until an OS boots on my TV that i have it plugged up to. Had to do this the week before im getting a new one... thanks

    Is this a good deal?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 01:26 PM PST

I have the opportunity to buy a 2017 MBP for £300, which is much cheaper than others I've seen for sale. The only problem is the WiFi is listed as not working. When connected it apparently freezes the whole laptop and requires a restart.

Usually this would out me off, but I have lots of wired connections around my house, and would rarely use the laptop anywhere other than at home, when I do I could just be offline without it affecting me.

So I guess my question is, is this a good deal?

Is it likely to turn into anything more serious?

    Thanks in advance!

    Macbook Air M1 8gb vs 16gb

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 11:10 AM PST

Hey guys. I was considering getting the new mba with 8gb ram until I heard that swap ram has a negative effect on your ssd and hence the macbook in the long term. I'm mostly gonna be using the laptop for browsing, making music, editing a ton of photos, and video editing.

I really wanna futureproof the macbook. Is it worth spending the extra buck for the 16gb upgrade?

    Case and screen protector?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 04:17 PM PST

Hello, I recently purchased the new M1 MBP and I am wondering whether I should get a case and screen protector. I heard from some that they have problems with a case and screen protector, claiming that it damaged the laptop. However, from others, I've heard the opposite. What do y'all think?

MacBook Pro 2017 crashed and doesn‘t start anymore

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 03:35 PM PST

I was running a few applications and then it shut off. Battery was also close to being empty. Now it doesn't start anymore.

    • Open the MacBook without charging cable plugged in: It shows the red charge battery sign, trackpad is working

    • Plug in charger after step 1 while empty battery sign is shown: Display and sound shows that the battery is charging but the system does not start, waited a few hours still the same

    • Open MacBook while it is plugged in to power: Nothing happens. Display doesn't turn on, Trackpad not working, Sound not working.

    • Unplug cable and do the first thing again: Same result as in step 1.

What can this be and what can I do? I already did the cmd ctrl opt and power button reset.

    Thanks for your help!

I got a 2020 MacBook air from work. Help me love it.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 05:22 AM PST

My new job offered the choice of a new 2020 Air which I decided to go for but I'm majorly regretting it because it's so different and I'm so used to Windows shortcuts. I miss my touch screen Dells and Microsoft Surface laptops from previous old jobs. I'm majorly frustrated adapting to the Mac, but I know it has a huge following and that must be for a good reason.

Help me love my new Mac and tell me why they're superior so I feel better about this choice.

(I'm aware this is a major first world problem, I'm really grateful to have a job in this economy and this post is intended to be light hearted fun.)

    Macbook pro 8GB vs MacBook air 16gb - M1

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 02:34 PM PST

So I'm a student and I had a terrible experience with my current laptop, so much so that I don't even use anymore (it's horrible, really) and that's why I want to buy one of the new m1 MacBook as they seem really powerful and reliable. Now I will do some heavy multi-tasking, sometimes coding and using autocad + exporting and importing vids and stuff so I'm not sure if 8gb is enough for that. However my budget can't let me buy a 16gb mbp so idk if I should get the 16gb air or if the 8gb pro is enough. Can anyone give me some advice so that I can make the right decision?

Should I get the M1 MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2021 08:17 AM PST

I've been hearing rumors about a possible 14-inch coming out late 2021, but the baseline M1 MacBook is already significantly over my budget, especially considering the 14-inch will probably be the higher-end MacBook pro. Should I wait until the release or would it be futile considering the prices MAY be higher?

Also, I have the 2019 MacBook Pro currently but I have issues with the keyboard + the fans (it heats up insanely fast) so I thought I'd might as well sell the current one for a device that'll (hypothetically) last me longer.
