Automatically Switch from Natural Scrolling to Reverse Scrolling when mouse connects Posted: 13 Jan 2021 06:20 PM PST I use my MacBook Pro a lot of times as a desktop and leave it plugged in to a monitor and use a USB dongle for a Logitech mouse and keyboard. I also take my Mac on the go sometimes and use it as a laptop and use the trackpad. It's so annoying to have to switch back and forth from natural scrolling when using the trackpad to reverse scrolling when using the mouse scroll wheel. Is there any way to automate switching this setting when connected to a mouse vs when it's not? [link] [comments]

Internet Sharing Automatically Disabling Itself Posted: 14 Jan 2021 01:11 AM PST Hey people, Worthy of note: - Internet Sharing in System Preferences says On but the WiFi Icon does not display the arrow pointing towards the top of the screen indicating the Sharing). I have already read that the computer itself will not enter Sleep Mode whenever Internet Sharing is on but could there be anything else causing this problem? I have searched online but all I could find are people QQing in the Apple forums with no reply whatsoever. Thanks in advance for your help, have a great day and stay healthy out there! =) [link] [comments]

MacOS memory management vs. Windows and Linux--how does it compare? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:52 PM PST Hello, I'm new to this sub, have very limited experience with Macs, and am considering buying one of the M1 Macbook Airs to get more experience with Macs and because I would like a newer computer. I'm trying to decide on 8 GB or 16 GB of memory for the Macbook. How does MacOS stack up in terms of memory management compared to Windows 10 and popular Linux distros? I've noticed that the Linux distributions I've used (primarily Ubuntu-, Arch-, and Debian-based distros) tend to have much worse memory management on my Dell Latitude E5440 with 8 GB of memory than Windows 10 does. With Windows 10 I can open 30 web browser tabs, tons of Office apps, various IT apps, Spotify, various messaging apps, multiple RDP sessions, and other apps without issue. With Linux distros, when I try to replicate things as closely as possible as when I use Windows, the memory usage shows as being much higher (I assume due to the default paging vs. swap settings or functionality). I've had a couple friends replicate this as well (we've all had many years of professional IT experience). Does anyone know how MacOS compares to Windows or Linux in terms of how good its memory management is? Thanks in advance for any help! [link] [comments]
Over 130gb of "Other" storage on MacBook Pro 250gb - tools for freeing up space? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST I can't even install Big Sur because half of the hard drive space I paid for is being taken up by something and Mac won't tell me what it is. Are there any tools for efficiently cleaning up the hard drive? I've seen things like CleanMyMac X, but also heard that they're potentially damaging [link] [comments]
Flickering while watching Netflix with subtitles on Safari Big Sur Posted: 13 Jan 2021 11:22 PM PST Actually, this has been a really old issue but it hasn't been fixed yet. The screen flickers intensely when a subtitle line shows up after there haven't been any subtitle. I looked online and they said to turn of GPU switching, but I'm on a Macbook Pro 13 inch 2019 2-TB3 laptop that has integrated graphics. It's become really painful to watch anime on Netflix because of this issue... And also, if it helps, I set my Netflix subtitle font size to the smallest. I'd like to avoid switching browsers so I can get the best video quality, Any help with this one? Macbook Pro, 13-inch 2019 (2 Thunderbolt 3 Ports) macOS Big Sur 11.1 [link] [comments]

Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:11 PM PST How do I allow notifications for web versions of GroupMe and Instagram via Safari for the Mac? I can do this on Google Chrome by allowing notifications via System Preferences and Chrome's own settings. However, I can't seem to get Safari to ask me whether I want to receive notifications. I already changed GroupMe and Instagram's own settings to allow desktop notifications. I also allowed Safari to send me notifications as well via System Preferences. Yet, I don't see any banners appearing. [link] [comments]
Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:49 AM PST I love the functionalities of notifications in Catalina, like quick reply etc. but in big sur the notifications are so buggy and hard to use, closing them also diffucult sometimes because in some cases top bar is blocking the close button on the notification or close button just not show up. is there any possible solution or news that apple announced they are aware of it? Strange battery behaviour MBP 2016 after 10.14.16 update Posted: 13 Jan 2021 07:17 AM PST Hi everyone, Yesterday i updated my now roughly 4 year old MBP (the first one with touch bar). It was a mere security update for mojave(specifically to 10.14.16), as i didn't have the need to upgrade my OS. Well after doing that, suddenly my battery is acting up. Let me explain. I made the update, made little use of the machine and left it to sleep with the lid closed and a full battery. After a few hours i came back and when trying to open my mac i saw the red battery icon indicating i had none left. So i grab the charger and plug it in. But it didn't boot up, after about 10 min i search on google and see that i can force it to boot with a SMC reset, and it worked! But it says battery is at 0% and it didn't increase, so i unplug and it "powers off". Try to power on again and it works, tells me i have 100% battery. I think this is strange but have things to do, so i plug it in and use it for the night. Once done i specifically turn the mbp off, only to find the next morning that when trying to boot it up i get the same behaviour as last night. I checked system report, and it tells me my battery is normal and at cycle 600. I've read that apple estimates around 1000? So after getting it to show 100% again and not turning off when unplugging from the charger i leave it on and just playing a youtube video, to check its behaviour. After about 15 min life gets in the way and it goes to sleep. I close the lid and after about 20 min i get back to it only to see the red battery icon again. And again showing 0% and having to jump through hoops to get it to display 100 and not powering off when unplugged. So now, i have updated to Big Sur, because, hey maybe this last update screwed something up. And after updating, i dropped 1% battery charge after about 20 min heavier usage, which also isn't normal. And also system report now tells me my battery needs service. But it bugs me, my battery was COMPLETELY fine yesterday before the update. So now i'm in the process of recalibrating the battery( i've read: charge to full, use while plugged in for 2h, let battery run out, leave dead for 5h, charge to full without using it) If this doesn't work i would go back to my last time machine backup made just before yesterdays update. But at this point i'm linda pesimistic. But who knows maybe someone has any idea what happened or what i could do? [link] [comments]
Can I install Mojave instead of Catalina from internet recovery? Posted: 13 Jan 2021 12:40 PM PST I am going to upgrade a 2012 Macbook Pro with more RAM and an SSD. The newest supported OS on this model is Catalina. Apple states that using internet recovery will install the newest version of macOS available on the machine, which would be Catalina in this case. It there any way I can get the internet recovery to install Mojave instead? [link] [comments]
How to disable "This Mac can’t connect to Apple Media Services because of a problem with email" Posted: 13 Jan 2021 10:17 AM PST macOS Catalina keeps constantly logging me out of my Apple account, and every time it does a dialog box starts showing up every time I log on to my local user account. Need to free up RAM for LSAT Exam Posted: 13 Jan 2021 05:43 PM PST Hi Everyone! Bit of an interesting case on my hands and hoping someone can help out. My roommate is taking an LSAT exam (entry exam for law school in Canada) and has a Mac laptop. Since covid happened they've moved the exam to online and they have a system requirements program that checks your computer if it has all the specs needed. The one requirement not met is that the RAM is currently running at over their maximum requirement of 90%. After doing some digging it looks like that is the way Linux computers are designed (empty RAM is wasted RAM etc etc) So I was wondering if regardless of this information, there was any way to help clear out ram (or set a rule of only 85% is used etc) so that it runs at below the 90% maximum they specify and she can write her exam on her computer. We've tried to force close some apps but more just open in its place over a short period of time. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Randomly freed up 180 GB of space! Posted: 13 Jan 2021 01:47 PM PST My Other category was taking up over 100GB of space and after purging application caches in the Library folder, I got it down to a bit over 70GB. But when I opened BootCamp Assistant, and then clicked continue, it started "removing local time machine snapshots," and when it was done, it freed 180GB of space for me. 16 inch MB Pro Base Model.
