I now get why Apple is so popular in the united states.

I just switched a few days ago towards the appple experience. Macbook Air M1 Gold. Iphone. Windows is like someone letting you do anything you want. but its not a perfect thing. You have to customize a lot and the default experience is meh. You get freedom but you need to put a lot of work to get it just right. But macOS...limiting sure. but after a few hours of work it is all there. An entire company curating an experience towards your needs. Right click has everything you need. You have it all at your fingertips. Its perfect really. Less time wasted on changing things constantly. Its there, now work...

On the other hand Iphone is a bit meh. Android in my opinion is just more fun/beautiful because you can make it your own with minimal minimal customization.. I have now discovered how to change icons without shortcuts and its a bit better. but still.. Macos though..*chef's kiss*

    Keyboard spazzing out.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:09 AM PST

For the past few hours I've had having this problem with my MacBook Pro 2017 that has made me want to blow my brains out.

So first, my space bar became sticky. Whenever I tried to press it, it would only work in a certain spot, and the key wouldn't really press down.

To fix this, I first tried blowing between the cracks with my mouth, this didn't work. Then, I tried to stick my license between the crack to get the dust out, didn't work. Then.... I used a straw to blow between the cracks of the space bar. After I tried this, my keyboard started freaking out. I couldn't type at all. I would press the keys, then nothing would happen. Then, I would press a key and it would press 2 other random keys that I didn't press. It seems to be working on and off. I restart the computer and I couldn't type my password in. It would spam keys when I only typed one. Then, after restarting it a couple of times, it started working. Three minutes later, I can't type at all. I'm assuming that some saliva got in the keyboard and some how screwed the whole keyboard up?????

I'm a university student so I kind of really need my computer right now. If anyone could help, or lead in the right direction I would GREATLY appreciate it. I'm really stressed right now. Thank you.

(Also if there's a better sub for this let me know)

MacBook Pro 13" A1278 Unibody Mid-2012 : No Battery installed issue.

    Posted: 30 Jan 2021 12:05 AM PST

My battery is old I accept that, but last time it was being detected by OS, it has ~480 cycles, that I assume means just a little bit better than absolutely dead.

Now, I had to open up the macbook and replace its fan as my fan was faulty as reported by hardware diagnostics and cross verified using fan control utility.

After Fan replacement when I placed everything back in its original place and tried booting up my MBP, it won't show any signs of booting up, as if I am not even pressing the power button. As soon as I connected AC Adapter, it started working as usual, including the fan, but now battery symbol wasn't there, so I had to go to system information and check power, where 'Battery installed' entry has 'NO' as input, and all other entries were also pointing towards lack of a battery. Before posting here, I have been trying to find a solution and has tried a few things already :
    1. Reopening the MBP and re-seating power connector to make sure it wasn't the culprit.

    1. Tried that Shift+Command+Option+Power to reset something as mentioned over Ifixit, that thing didn't work either (Macbook went to shut down state as soon as I pressed this key combination and then nothing. Normal restarted worked but no signs of any change)

    2. Tried clearing PRAM as well as per the instructions available over the internet.

My question to anybody with a possible solution to this is : Could it really be battery, when last night it was at 480 cycles and now totally absent !
Looking forward to solutions on this, as a lot of people have posted over the internet about the same.

Is anyone successfully running 2 external displays with only one USB-C Hub?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:06 PM PST

I have a 2017 13" MBP that only has 2 thunderbolt connections. 1 is used up at all times as my audio interface is thunderbolt so it leaves me with one spare where i attach my usb-c hub and attach mbp charger, external display via hdmi and a couple of usb keyboards etc

    Butterfly keyboard solutions in 2021?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:04 PM PST

I have the 2017 Touch Bar MBP, which I bought shortly after it came out. Within a few months, I was having all the infamous butterfly keyboard problems. Keys stopped working randomly unless I pressed down really hard, some keys would double-press every time. Most of them became randomly usable again anywhere between a day and a couple weeks later. The other day, mid-essay, my n key stopped working unless you pushed down hard for 3-4 seconds, and it hasn't righted itself since. My spacebar has also had problems for the past year.

I know about the replacement program, but I stupidly spilled juice on my keyboard within the first year of having it, which I'm pretty sure voided any warranty/free service I might be entitled to. I was planning on upgrading to a new laptop this summer, but I still need a device until then and I'm at my wits' end with this butterfly keyboard. It's gotten to the point where I avoid using my laptop unless I absolutely have to. This post alone was painstaking to type out. What would be my best course of action at this point?

should i take my laptop to apple to repair? 16 inch mbp i7 base, throttles badly sometimes

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 12:42 PM PST

my laptop seems to throttle/lag A LOT, to the point where switch chrome tabs takes 2-5 seconds to load...

    here's my setup:

    • 16 inch i7 32/512 setup
    • connected a dongle/adapter for charging/mouse/hdmi
    • monitor is AOC 34 inch 1440p, based on the sys info, it's running at 60hz

    i run the usual apps:

    • chrome(max 15 tabs)
    • intellij(1-3 projects open)
    • iterm2
    • outlook
    • teams
    • wechat
    • sublime text
    • spotify
    • sometimes word/excel/ppt

from what i see, the temperatures are usually under 70, but fans are always like 3-5k rpm.. i ALWAYS use the right charging port since there's really no room on my left...

this laptop is about 6 months old, it was taken in for repair to fix usb ports which broke; seems they had to replace everything, cpu/ram/ssd.

anyone else experience this? any remedies? is something wrong with my unit?

Is my MBA M1 screen faulty? Blue tinted fingerprints/dust/literally anything that touches it

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:26 PM PST

As the title says, is it normal that every fingerprint turns blue once you try to wipe it with microfiber cloth? (no water and no alcohol) I am suspecting that my screen is missing its protective coating. I cleaned it eventually but I had to wipe it for some time, unlike any other screen that I've ever used (this is my first Apple product)

Is it normal for the battery to drain that fast? I used the laptop from 6pm to 9pm and it consumed almost 50% (given that I only watched netflix on safari)

    Coming from 2014 MBP 13 to M1 MBA 13

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 11:22 AM PST

I've had my MacBook Air M1 for a few days after coming from my MacBook Pro 13 from 2014 (dual-core, 8GB RAM) - a few comments that not many people have picked up on...

    1. Whilst the camera isn't better in resolution, exposure-control is so much better. Before, I used to be an unrecognisable silhouette on video calls, and now I am probably a bit too exposed...I would much rather that though, a night and day difference.
    2. The keyboard feels wider overall (the keys as well), something that you get quickly used to. They also have a tactile feel, less mushy than my 2014 Pro which is nice.
    3. The speakers actually sound like speakers, before they just produced sound - it's hard to explain but a big experience, I actually enjoy listening to music on this.
    4. MagSafe...I really really miss it.
    5. This M1 Air is so damn thin, it's crazy to think that they fitted a fan inside previous models of this design.

It's also made me realise that no matter how fast the MacBook is, it won't make your internet any faster haha.

Another frustration is the amount of devs that can't be bothered to optimise their Electron apps to Apple Silicon...Discord, Spotify etc - I'm no expert, but I was under the impression that this is fairly easy to do.

FYI, I ordered a case for it, and it didn't fit - the seller thinks that it is an issue with the case that they have sent me, so they are sending a replacement...I guess I'll have to wait and see. Also, I know that cases aren't the best, but I had one on my old Pro and never had any issues with scratching...I can understand why some people would though. I want to get a skin but all the manufacturers are in the US and I can't justify the shipping costs :(

MacbookAir M1 2 Screens when not using the built in screen ?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 11:02 AM PST

I have read that it is only possible to attach 1 external screen (As the M1 processor only allows up to 2 screens - the internal one + 1 additional one).

Is it possible to somehow disable the internal one completely while in closed display mode. So it allows for 2 external Screens without the use of additional DisplayLink adapters etc. ?

M1 Macbbok air started Spotlight indexing out of the blue

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 10:53 AM PST

Got my base M1 macbook air 2-3 weeks back and made it a fresh machine with no settings or files carried over.

I had stupendous battery life for the first 5 cycles but now I am getting super poor batter life and I went into energy monitor to see spotlight using the most power.

Is this usually the case? Spotlight starting to index out of the blue? How many indexings should I expect on a monthly basis? This has been going on for the past 1.5 days.

MacBook Pro 16 inch, not charging while powered off. Please help.

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 09:22 AM PST

So this issue just started today after I plugged my MacBook in after I finished editing some photos in Lightroom.

Basically, when my MacBook is powered off it won't charge when I plug it in. And no, there is nothing wrong with the power outlet, the charging brick, or the cable. It charges perfectly when powered on so I'm assuming its software related (but I could be wrong).

I thought it was a consequence of possibly over heating during editing, but I don't know.

Anyone else with this issue? Anyone able to help me out?

Anyone else have a heat issue with the 2020 Silicon Macbooks when they charge?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:40 AM PST

Figured I'd ask this here. My 2020 macbook heats up drastically whenever I plug it in to charge. Downloaded a fan control but it barely does a thing to improve the situation (since the fan is placed in the top right corner so at best it provides ambient cooling). Has anyone found a solution to this issue or is it just kind of something to live with?

Portable Battery Query with M1 MacBook Air

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:15 AM PST

Hello! I am new to the Apple family as I just bought my first apple laptop, the base spec M1 MacBook Air with 8gb RAM/256gb Storage/7 gpu cores. And I recently bought a 20,000 mah portable power bank. My question is, and I don't know much about power capacities and deliveries, if my MacBook has a rated spec of 5,100 mah and the battery has a spec of 20,000 mah, why can't it charge the MacBook upwards of at least 3 times instead of the about 1.5 times that it seems to charge it at? I honestly don't know if this is the right subreddit to ask this question but I didn't see one dedicated to power delivery or anything that specific. If anyone can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

    Question About Macbook Battery

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 08:12 AM PST

    Question About Macbook Battery

    Hey everyone,

My Macbook is about 5.5 years old now. The model is 2015 Early Retina 13 inch.

2-3 years ago I read somewhere that if I keep it plugged in all the time, the cycles won't increase so I have been doing that ever since, as much as possible, hence the low cycle count for such a relatively old macbook. Once in a rare moon, I do let it die down.

Anyway, my question is: what condition the battery is in? Do I need to replace it? If I do, is it encouraged to change it by oneself? And if so, where should I get the batter and the kit for it?

And finally, do you guys have any idea as to why is my battery condition: Service? And how to fix it?

    Thanks.

Macbook making rattling sounds during Zoom. Anybody else have this?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 07:54 AM PST

Hi, whenever I'm on a call on Zoom my macbook (late 2015) makes this annoying rattling/static sound on the left of the keyboard. The sound sometimes happens when I use the mic of my macbook for other apps but when I'm on Zoom it happens nonstop, even when the mic is off or I'm using an earphone mic.

Anybody else have something similar or any advice to offer? Apple stores are closed so I can't do anything :(

Long time windows user worth making the jump to MacOS?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:41 AM PST

I have been using Windows devices since I first every used a computer and I love it. My laptop history include a MSI Gaming laptop, and ASUS laptop, a Dell XPS 13 9360, and as of a few days ago a Dell XPS 13 9310. However, I have found problems with it, mainly the webcam, the battery, and the screen is having troubles. I am going to refund it.

Let me start by saying I never thought that I would ever consider entering the apple ecosystem but as of last year, I got both an iPhone 11 as well as an iPad 6th gen and I do not regret it. The iPad helped me out a lot for my university work and the iPhone 11 has been consistent since getting it. Taking pictures is amazing, the battery life is great, consistently getting me 6 hours of Onscreen time (though I could swear that it was better when I first got it, battery is now at 87% after owning it for 13 months). The iOS system is just great. I am even considering getting into the airpod pro and watch SE market.

The reason I got a XPS 9310 a few days ago was because my 9360 has been really reliable and I wanted the same experience again. I also have an eGPU which I sometimes use for gaming (though that too is increasingly seeing less use as my enthusiasm for gaming is getting lost, I might just play less graphic intensive games nowadays like Minecraft or older games). With that slowly going away, my main reason for avoiding MacOS is gone which is why I am now considering it, especially with the newly released M1 versions. Battery life is superb and that's one thing I put a lot of value on. I am also in my last year of undergrad and will likely add another year or two for postgrad in literature, so I will need to type a lot. I hear the keyboard and trackpad are the best on the market. The seamless connection between iDevices and airdropping is neat too.

However, I am still on the fence about switching to a new system, or just sticking with my older XPS 9360. So what are the advantages of MacOS? Particularly for a student? What would you say to someone to convince them that they won't regret switching to MacOS?

Can I put my MacBook upside down when in clam shell mode?

    Posted: 29 Jan 2021 04:39 AM PST

My MacBook doesn't have a fan. To help it avoid overheating, can I just put it upside down and call it a day? What do you think? I mean I understand it's kinda stupid.
