    Weighing the options

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 12:12 PM PST

My wife has a 2010 13 inch MBP. Its been running slower and slower and is at this point basically unusable. I was going to go ahead and upgrade it to a SSD and upgrade the ram. Probably replace the battery while im in there. Total cost will be somewhere around $200 all said and done.

The other option I have is to buy a 2019 15 inch macbook pro still under apple care until September 2021 for $500.

My thoughts are prolonging the life of the 2010 MBP possibly for a very short amount of time is a huge waste of money. Am I thinking clearly?

Is M1 Macbook Pro suitable for Machine Learning + Software Engineering work?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:09 PM PST

Hey guys, so my company is making me choose a new Macbook model. I work as a data scientist and heavily use docker, all things python related as well as SQL and a lot of multi-tasking. Is a M1 Macbook Pro suitable for this currently or should I be better off with a standard i7 one? Thanks!

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:57 PM PST

    Hey guys!

Recently my mac got "question folder" at boot up, and im in hurry to buy new SSD. A fellow of mine got yourself Intel 760p, but i see alot of suggestions for evo 970 plus. My only concern is temp, cause, i far as i understand, the evo,s can get quite hot. Which would you recommend?
    Thanks!

    Best Mac for music (?)

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:40 PM PST

Hey there. So, I just got a new midi keyboard for Christmas. I'll need an interface to plug in guitar. While it came with "Ableton Live (lite)" it's always been garage band that I find the most user friendly. There is absolutely no way I can afford a new model. I did however see a refurbished 2014 MacBook Pro that caught my eye for around 600$. I guess my question is would this be a good route to go if I'm primarily using it to record music, and if not, are there any other recommendations? Thanks.

    Apollo on M1 Macbooks!!

    Apollo on M1 Macbooks!!

Anyone who hates the Reddit app as much as I do because of how laggy it is. If you use apollo on your Iphone, you can use it on your macbook as well! It works surprisingly well and the mouse gestures works too for upvoting and changing subreddit!

macos patcher tips for mid 2007 macbook "13?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:31 PM PST

hi there, i have a mid 2007 macbook 13 inch (polycarbonate, 2,1). it runs macos x 10.7.5 lion officially, however, i'd like to patch it to something as new as 10.11 el capitan. it isn't support on any newer patchers from dosdude1. i tried stuff like macpostfactor and attempted to upgrade it to el capitan and yosemite and both lead me to no avail. any tips? am i just trying something that will lead me nowhere? (by the way, i do not have any other macs except a mini from 2009 that my brother has running dosdude1's catalina patcher) (also if needed it has a 256gb ssd and 4gb of ram)

Why does using thunderbolt for HDMI make the macbook run so hot?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:43 PM PST

I was using a cheap adapter for an HDMI cable and figured that's why it made everything so hot, but I just got a thunderbolt <-> hdmi cable and it does the same thing. It's definitely using HDMI out because that 1/2 of the macbook cools off as soon as I unplug the cable.

What is a “Palm Rest Actuator?”

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 03:25 PM PST

Now, I'm no newbie to computers, but as far as I can tell, palm rests don't... "actuate." On iStat Menus there is a "palm rest actuator", which I can only assume is Apple speak for the haptic click engine? But I don't know for sure, because that's a weird way to put it. Any ideas?

Macbook 12" 2015 dies when waking from sleep under 50% power

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 05:58 AM PST

Hi all, I recently purchased a used Macbook 12" 2015 online. It's in pristine condition and everything works. The only issue I am having is that for whatever reason, if I wake it from sleep/standby and it has under 50% or so battery, it lets me log in but then a few seconds after logging in, it goes black. When I hit the power key it shows me the "dead battery" indicator telling me to plug it in. I plug it in, and it works and is back at the level it was before it died (for instance, today it did this at 33%; other days anywhere from 20% to 40+%). I've tried a full MacOS reinstall without restoring from backup and I've reset the SMC once but neither seemed to do anything for me. The system reports battery health is "Good" with 366 cycles and around 75% capacity vs. when it was new.

Any advice on what to do here? It's not the end of the world, I guess, since USB-C makes it fairly easy to plug it in quick to make it work again, but it is irritating. I just got into MacOS for the first time a couple months ago so I am not really familiar with a lot of it, but I am fairly technical in general. Thanks in advance!

Packaged MacBook Pro left outside for a day

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 01:39 PM PST

    Hi all,

My MacBook Pro came several days earlier than Apple's site said it would, and I received neither a notification from them nor from the delivery carrier, so the computer sat on my porch (in dry but frigid Midwestern winter temps) for over 24 hours.

Should I be concerned? I haven't turned it on or anything, I've just brought the Apple box indoors and I'm letting the laptop sit in said box until it gets to room temp. Any other precautions I need to take? Or sorts of damage/performance issues to keep my eye out for?

    Thanks in advance.

MBA 2020 m1 starts because of sleeve

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:32 AM PST

    Hello,

Each time I put my mba in the native union sleeve (bought on the apple store), the MacBook starts !

    It's as funny as annoying.

I tried putting the MacBook on top of the sleeve, and pushing the sleeve away : the MacBook also starts.

It seems like a magnetic problem between the case and the mba.

I'm on the phone with the support, they say they have never heard something like that.

So, if you are planning to buy a m1 mba, don't buy a case or a sleeve with magnets.

    Audio issues when recording

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 11:09 AM PST

I have a mix I'm trying to record with audacity... It's a 6-hour long mix. After 3-ish hours, the audio in the recording becomes crackly and eventually just drops out completely. Anyone have any similar issues?

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 09:02 AM PST

The only issue is I have an LG 29WN600-W 29" 21:9 UltraWide with no USB-C port (for power passthrough and display).

    First time MacBook owner.

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 02:21 AM PST

Hi everyone! So I'm going to be buying a MacBook for the first time very soon. I am a loyal Apple customer, the only phone I've ever owned is iPhones, had iPads, Apple TV, just never wanted to spend the money for the MacBook but since doing my research I want one! I'm having trouble choosing between the MacBook Pro with the new M1 Chip or the MacBook Air with the M1 chip. I'd just be using it for basic things like Netflix, Hulu, and maybe a little bit of gaming if I can get Fortnite to work on it. Which one would you guys suggest for a first time owner?

    Opening Encrypted Zip file

    Posted: 12 Jan 2021 06:51 AM PST

I'm very sorry if this is not a good sub to post this in, but I am lost. I'm a MacOS newbie and I have an encrypted Zip file, ends in .zip.enc and I cannot figure out how to open it. It's my Facebook data, so in theory I have the password, but at no point am I getting asked for a password. I downloaded WinZip, I'm that confused. Apparently Archive Utility is the Mac equivalent and I didn't need to do that? At any rate, I still cannot figure out how to get into this file and...it's my file! I appreciate any help, or if anyone wants to point me in the direction of the right sub to post this in. Thanks.
