I’m trying to apply this desk concept to the Logitech Touch Folio without damaging it so that the kickstand won’t be needed when working on a lap or possible ever since it does take up some space. Any ideas?

iPad battery drain - FIXED (kinda)

iPad battery drain - FIXED (kinda)

Q: Why does my iPad drain 1-3% an hour when off?

A: Don't know, but after FIXING it with several months of testing I'm convinced it's a setting in my iCloud profile

Problem: Like many, many others, since sometime early this year my iPad battery drains between 1-3% an hour regardless of what's in use or its configuration. Interestingly, it doesn't do it when charged to 100% (It sits at 100% for a LONG time until it's used, and bizarrely, on random occasions, it will behave as expected for a period of a couple of days, and then go back to draining. Here is an example of what I mean, dated May 16th:

    https://preview.redd.it/jgc9e0fe3m261.png?width=232&format=png&auto=webp&s=66033fe488d5d0c6e9cc8cd5578353968a9964cb

Note the app usage is measured in single minutes, there is no blue usage indicator for the majority of the time, yet the drain is significant.

And here is an example of how on occasion, the thing would just 'fix itself':

    https://preview.redd.it/0g3ajcih3m261.png?width=189&format=png&auto=webp&s=e86e028a941ec325aa7e8424765b97d00111878a

Notice between 9am and 5pm there's no drain. But between 5 and midnight there is significant drain, and again no drain between midnight and 8:00am. Now, you are likely thinking I left an app running or the screen on. I concede, as this was back in May it's possible, but not probable. Regardless, I have been acutely conscious of that during my many months of testing and would regularly ensure all apps were closed and the screen was off, with the clicking sound that occurs when you push the power button.

Over the course of several months, I have performed a significant amount of testing, including all the internet recommendations (minus the chicken blood-letting), and am 100% convinced it is something embedded deep within my iCloud profile, and NOT something I can affect by reboots, reloads or configuration settings.

Here's a short version of what I tried prior to visiting the genius bar:

For clarity, the iPad in question for the steps immediately below was an iPad version 6 that was about 13 months old when the issue started.
So, I start with all the usual guff:

    • Power off / Power on

    • Changing mail sync

    • Turn off mail sync

    • Turn off siri (everywhere)

    • Deleting all mail/calendar accounts

    • Power off and leave it off (If 'slide to power off', the battery does NOT drain)

    • Erase all settings and reload backup

Nothing worked, so moved on to more in-depth testing:

    • DFU to my regular profile with all apps restored

    • Go through all settings 1x1 on my wife's ipad and set mine to exactly the same

    • DFU to my regular profile but vanilla state (No apps restored and no mail, calendar, etc configured to sync). i.e. nothing was running at all as it was a fresh install straight after DFU using my standard icloud account. I didn't restore and didn't load anything else, leaving only the default new ipad loadout.

    • DFU to my wife's account and run that in vanilla

None of this worked, as you can see from this screenshot now on August 28th:

    https://preview.redd.it/t47d8liz3m261.png?width=239&format=png&auto=webp&s=9141b3e111c193af7c47514c8a91371a44ad7d12

So… I thought the final remaining thing was to assume the battery was knackered, bite the bullet and go to the genius bar.

    ROUND 2

I arrive at the genius bar, go through my spiel and hand over my iPad for their testing. It passed! My battery was in great condition at 97% and so the conclusion must be that given my extensive testing it must be a hardware issue. They could replace the entire device for the cost of the battery or I could use it for a trade-in. OK – I'm an impulse buyer and prompted to go for a new iPad pro 11".

Excitedly, I arrive home and hurriedly perform an iCloud restore, charged the iPad to 100% and began. Curiously, (as has always been the case) after charging to 100% the problem doesn't show itself until the iPad is being used. The battery indicator stays at 100%. However, as soon as you start using the iPad in earnest, the battery drain issue immediately returns. So, my testing continues:

    • Blow away my profile and restore my wife's (Same problem)

    • Check my wife's iPad and lo-and-behold, it has the same draining profile

    • On the verge of tears I do a DFU and restore an iCloud profile I set up years ago but never used

    **PROBLEM FIXED!**

I have been operating on this new profile for over a week and it is working perfectly. I have started downloading more and more apps, on purpose leaving as many open as I can, have mail syncing, all siri options on, and it remains working perfectly.

    My conclusion

Given that the same iPad can behave differently depending on the iCloud profile, regardless of the amount of testing, tweaking configuration and rebooting, the only conclusion must be it is something to do with the iCloud profile itself. Even the DFU and vanilla restore didn't work.

It's a horrible workaround because I can't take any of the advantages of having a common profile across all my apple devices, but for now, at least the iPad is working as expected. I have seen SO MANY people who have a similar issue who get taken through most of these troubleshooting steps, exasperated not to find a fix, that I wish apple would step up and actually fix this issue. Let's face it, there are tens-of-thousands of us who could likely demonstrate this as a repeatable issue.

If you are having the same problem, please create a new iCloud account and try restoring after a DFU. Even if it's just for troubleshooting, at least we can together prove where the problem is.

Comments welcome, especially if you've already figured out how to fix my original profile ;-)

    Good luck!

Does the Ipad Pro (or any ipad) bypass the battery when it’s plugged in?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 01:55 PM PST

I was wondering if the ipad pro bypasses the battery when it is under heavy workload like playing games. While playing Genshin Impact on max settings it obviously becomes quite hot and the battery drains super fast so I tend to play while it is plugged in, but I am concerned about the battery's health long term.

iPad Air 4 Backlight Bleed: How Widespread Has This Issue Been?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 06:37 AM PST

Hi! First time posting in this subreddit so apologies if my formatting isn't correct.

Yesterday, I received my brand new iPad Air 4 from Amazon (Space Grey, 64gb) and was pretty disappointed to find that as soon as I turned it on, there was some pretty noticeable backlight bleed in one of the corners of the display. I know that quite a few other people have encountered this same manufacturing defect, and I am thankfully receiving my replacement from Amazon this Thursday. I was just wondering if any users of this subreddit have encountered this same issue with their new iPad Air 4, and what has your experience with getting it replaced been like?

ipadOS 14 disable shape recognition in notes

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 07:56 AM PST

I have been using my ipad for writing out mathematical equations. I normally waste a lot of scratch paper with these derivations. The Notes app has been perfect for condensing and better organizing everything. No more heaps of scribbled papers everywhere.

With the new update and shape recognition, Notes is now interpreting my symbols as circles or squares or triangles. For instance, the symbol ξ it keeps trying to turn into a small rectangle or an angled "7". The word "on" in cursive it interprets as a small circle. It distracts me from working and I repeatedly have to correct it.

Can I just turn the shape recognition off? I have checked options for the Pencil and Notes, and there's nothing there. Disabling Scribble does not fix this.

Apple pencil and third party cases

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:08 AM PST

    Hi everyone,
I recently ordered an iPad pro with the gen 2 apple pencil.
After that, I bought a third-party case which arrived before the actual iPad and I'm not really noticing any space left for the apple pencil to magnetize to the side of the tablet.
Would you guys happen to have any experience with cases like that because I'm worried that the pencil won't be able to charge properly.

Trying to find good tempered glass screen protector to work with Apple Pencil

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:07 PM PST

Now, I don't care too much about the texture or feeling, what I really care about is maintaining accuracy with the Apple Pencil. I've seen many reviews on Amazon claim that certain glass screen protectors lose that accuracy. Of the people who frequently use their apple pencil for art/note-taking, do you have any recommendations for tempered glass screen protectors that don't sacrifice accuracy?

If it's needed info, this is for a 2020 iPad Pro 11"

Best App to Mark Up Articles Saved from Web?

    Posted: 01 Dec 2020 02:18 AM PST

Hey all. Recently got an iPad Air 4 with the Pencil. I'm still figuring out how to best use the pencil, but one thing I want to do is to save an article from the Web - some news or magazine piece - and then make notes in the margin or highlight.

I know there are lots of good notetaking apps. But can anyone suggest an app for that specific use case? Would really appreciate it.

I'm trying to find the best mic to use on my iPad Pro for capturing my voice in gameplay or when creating tutorials. I don't need expensive. I need portability and good audio without static.

I prefer one that can connect to my hub adapter. I have usbA 3.0 on my hub and have a usbA to 3.5mm adapter as well

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:06 PM PST

I have the apple pencil 1st gen and the iPad 10.2 in and I love it; however, there has been one thing that bothers me about the setup. Where the heck do I put the pencil? I looked on amazon for pencil loops but none of them mount the pencil on the side of the iPad. Do you guys have any ideas so I can put the pencil on the side of the iPad?

PDF viewer/annotator app that allows split view of the same PDF (for example, viewing page 1 and page 5 side by side)

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:59 PM PST

Does anyone know of a PDF viewer/annotator app for iPad that allows split view of the same PDF? For example, so you could view page 1 and page 5 side by side?

On a computer, you can do this in Adobe by creating multiple instances (i.e., windows) of the same PDF. Or you can do it in Foxit Reader with their "Split-Screen" feature.

I'm having trouble finding an iPad app that can do the same thing. I've tried Readdle and PDF Viewer - Annotation Expert but neither has offered this feature. Although PDF Viewer - Annotation Expert did offer the ability to view two different PDFs side by side.

Also interested in what PDF annotator apps you might recommend!
