The new MacBook Air M1 might throttles even with only daily student/researcher tasks if used in hot climate countries

The new MacBook Air M1 might throttles even with only daily student/researcher tasks if used in hot climate countries

    Hi all,

I have tested the new MBA m1 base model (7-core GPU) on its performance in cold and hot climate. The question was that could the M1 air perform properly on daily tasks for non-pro user in hot climate country or not (esp. student-researcher tasks)

So I setup the machine in 2 different temperatures,

Hot climate (33.2±0.2 ˚C) using convection heater in my bedroom and set it to the max for 3 hours before the test.

Cold climate (23.1±0.2 ˚C) this is an ambient temperature of my apartment in Sweden.

Test protocol: open all the crucial programs for student/researcher those I normally use including,

    - 3 MS Words (3x 10000 words assay with graphics)

    - 3 Large MS excels dataset (200 MB+)

    - 2 Powerpoint with 20+ figures in each file

    - Endnote X9.31 with attached paper files

    - MatLab 2020b with 600,000 data points and curve fitting app running

    - Chrome with 5 tabs opening webs for researching such as Sciencedirect, webofSci.

Plus some program that I personally open during the writing session including Youtube on Safari playing 1080p video, calculator, calendar app, mail app, note, stickies.

The CPU usage showed in Activity monitor varied in the range of 18-23%.

I measured the average CPU temperature and battery temperature during the test for one hour straight.

And also performed Cinebench R23 test for both climates before the test.

    Cinebench R23 score

    Hot climate (33.2˚C): Multi 7139, single 1480

    Cold climate (23˚C): Multi 7154, single 1484

Here is the result for the tasks load test.

CPU and battery temperature of MBA M1 in hot (33.3˚C) and cold (23.1˚C) environment.

You can see clearly that over the period of 750-3250 s, the temperature of the MBA M1 in hot climate increased from 40 to 42 ˚C. While in the same period, the temperature on the MBA m1 in cold climate decreased from 40 to 34 ˚C.

This result indicated that, in hot climate, the MBA M1 may fail to dissipate all the heat produced by its CPU, even without full sustained load. Hence, this will increase the temperature of the manic overtime, and consequently, this will definitely lead to thermal throttling when performing this type of works for a long period of time (the thermal throttling starts around 93˚C). Therefore, users in the countries those usually have ambient temperatures (33 ˚C+) should take this into consideration when buying MBA M1. If you intent to use a laptop in hot climate ambient temperature and requires top performance of the laptop all the time, you should probably look at MBA pro M1 instead.

PS. In a separated test, I have performed a stability test of MBA M1 in hot room using Cinebench R23 stability test function (30 mins full load). The multi score result was 5809 which is approximately 20% decrement compared to its full performance in cold room (around 71xx score).

    Leaving Macbook Air plugged in?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:00 PM PST

Just picked up a new M1 Macbook Air and am loving it so far.

I want to make sure that I preserve the battery life as much as possible. Is it bad if I leave it plugged in even when it's fully charged? A quick Google search has yielded answers on both sides...

Help needed - peripherals situation with M1 MacBook Air

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:31 PM PST

    Hello guys!

Recently I've purchased my brand new M1-powered MacBook Air (entry level). Right now I'm on a mission to bring all my necessary peripherals together so it can replace my 8700K + 32 RAM + 5700 XT hackintosh.

    I need to connect:

    - 4K monitor (at 60H0z via HDMI or DP)

    - MacBook charger

    - Logitech receiver for mouse and keyboard (USB-A)

    - ethernet port

    - nvme SSD (USB-C @ 10Gbps)

    - card reader (USB-A).

I've been looking for various dock/hub options and found that there is just one freakishly expensive product that suits my needs, that is CalDigit TS3 Plus docking station. Unfortunately - the list above is my bare minimum productivity-wise, and I cannot make it shorter.

I wonder if there's any less aesthetic/convenient way to plug in all my devices without the need to spend close to 250 EUR?

Any feedback or help much needed and appreciated!

NEW M1 MacBook Air 8gb: Safari crashing daily "your system has run out of application memory"

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:09 PM PST

Brand new laptop seemed so much better than my 4mo old 2020 MacBook Air with Intel then this started happening.

It will actually start to get a bit warm (aren't the supposed to run so much cooler?) and then a popup emerges asking me to Force Quit Safari because, "your system has run out of application memory".

Its a real PIA and never happened on the slower, hotter, Intel-based machine. Do I need more RAM or something? It shows 6.3/8gb being used. Im thinking thats the culprit perhaps. Only applications being run are: iMessage, WhatsApp and Safari (with LastPass, Rakuten, Honey extensions).

Would appreciate any suggestions from the far more knowledgeable techies on here!

Need some help understanding Activity Monitor

    Hey everyone!

I'm trying to choose between an 8GB or 16GB RAM MBA M1. Do I understand correctly (I've never used the activity monitor before) that I'm usually using around 13, and should therefore get 16?

    Thanks!

Stuck between choosing which MacBook to get

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:52 PM PST

I'm going to be using said MacBook for music production, video rendering, etc. etc. and I want something with longevity as well. I know the pro can go better for longer because of the fan, but the storage I'm forced to is turning me off. I'm leasing from Best Buy, otherwise I'd just get the 512 GB Pro. I know both options are fantastic regardless, but I also know that the MB Air can throttle more and slow down slightly due to no fan. Any input on which to go with?

Issue connecting Beats to Macbook Pro

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 04:44 PM PST

This didn't come up until I updated to Big Sur. I'm having trouble with connecting my Beats (whichever kind you get when you purchase a mac) automatically. I've tried turning both the beats and my mac bluetooth off/on, and even "removing" them, but I always have to fully restart my computer to make it work.

Any idea what the issue is?

    Do you like the touchbar?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:19 PM PST

Hey everyone! I'm new to this subreddit so sorry if that's a frequently asked question

I'm looking to upgrade from my 15'' Mid 2015 2.2 GHz Macbook Pro. I wanna trade it in and I'm afraid it'll lose value soon and I just want a smaller laptop that doesn't get very loud & overheated because I keep way too many tabs open :/

I'm choosing between the new 13" M1 Macbooks Pro and Air and the only big difference I see in them is the touch bar. I've never used it before and I'm not sure if I'll like it or even care about it. My brother says it's a cool thing to have but I'm not sure if it's worth the extra money. I would appreciate any feedback and insight

    Thanks!

Has anyone tried re-pasting the M1 Macbook Air

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:39 PM PST

Has anyone tried re-pasting the M1 macbook air to see if it reduces thermal throttling? I'd like to avoid buying the Pro if possible since the only thing that would make a difference for me is the performance. I'd rather have the air for Longeviity reasons (no fan means no dust)

Do you think my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) 16GB 2.2GHz will lose a lot of value to trade in next year?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:26 PM PST

    Hi everyone!

I'm thinking of switching to MBA M1 from my MBP 2015 tbh just because I feel like it. It does get a little slow now and then, but it's probably just me keeping too many tabs open. I don't usually run any heavy apps/games (I wanna learn graphic design in the nearest future, so I might start using photoshop & illustrator).

I've been hearing from people not to get the first-gen because it's new and untested. Right now, Apple values my MBP at $460, and I could get a base MBA for $600, which I think is a nice deal. However, I could wait a year or two for M2 to come out, and I'll start going to college so I can get an education discount, but I'm afraid my MBP will lose a couple hundred till that time comes. I would appreciate any advice!

    Thanks!

    Macbook Pro 13in 2020 (Intel) Screen Flicker/Errors

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 02:58 PM PST

    Hi,

I bought this new macbook pro (13in 2020, 2.0ghz intel i5, 4 ports, etc) around a month or two ago. Every 10-15 days, I notice these super small but very obvious screen errors, in which the pixels flicker in some way or another. The first time, my phone was leaning up against the screen, which I thought was the problem so I stopped doing that. The next, which happened just now, I had my hand leaning on the front part of my computer, and the screen flashed w green/blue pixelated squares in the middle.

It's almost impossible to replicate and seems to just happen, but it's quite concerning for a basically brand new computer. I just updated to Big Sur, so this has been happening now on Catalina and Big Sur.

Any ideas? Here is an imgur album with bad drawings of kinda what it looked like: https://imgur.com/a/nbQ1y2u

    Thank you!!

Time to upgrade from early 2015 Air 13" to M1 Macbook?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:58 AM PST

My early 15 Air has been with me for 4 years now and has traveled all over the world with me. This computer has run like a champ and I have grown pretty attached to it. Over the Last year have been experiencing increased system lockups and the temps running higher than normal. At one point it shut down and wouldn't turn on for several days but eventually powered back on. The lockups are an inconvenience but once force restarted it works fine. With the release of the M1 chip I have been wondering if now is the time to upgrade or keep the air and wait to see what M2 brings although I don't really need the extra performance.

Clamshell displays connection issues Big Sur/M1

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 09:01 AM PST

    Hi there,

I have a MacbookPro M1 running Big Sur. I'm trying to run it in a closed clamshell mode, powered using the USB-C -> USB/HDMI/USB-C Power adapter. It will sometimes work for a full day. Other times it'll start flickering and the monitor will say 'no source', 20s later turn back on... repeat 3-5 times. I've triple checked the cables and have no issues with my last Macbook.

I believe it's a power issue, when plugging in the adapter often the 'charging' ding happens. But sometimes it doesn't, and when it doesn't the screen also doesn't turn on. I've tried to turn off 'smart charging' but that didn't help.

    Any suggestions?

    External M.2 NVME SSD issues

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:11 AM PST

I recently purchased a Samsung 970 EVO 1 TB SSD and planned to use it as an external drive for my 2019 13 inch Macbook Pro (2 Thunderbolt 3 ports model, updated to Big Sur) but I keep having issues with it.

The original plan was to use the ssd with a USB 3.1 enclosure rated for 10 Gbps (this one from Sabrent, which is USB 3.2 but USB 3.1 compatible). Everything seemed fine when writing small files to it, but when I partitioned it to use it as a Time Machine drive as well, it started crashing after a few seconds of writing to it. This is when I discovered that JMS583 chipset enclosures have reliability issues with MacOS, even though the enclosure works fine with my other 970 EVO Plus 500GB SSD. I decided to try and purchase a RTL9210 based enclosure, as it seemed to be working fine from what I read online, but I still have issues with it. The weird thing is that using the USB 3.2 enclosure via a USB 3.0 dock doesn't cause any issues, apart from reducing read/write speeds to 5 Gbps.

I can't wrap my head around this, the SSD seems to be ok (USB 3.0 works fine), and so does the enclosure apart from USB 3.1 mode. Is this a MacOS issue? a MacBook Pro hardware issue?

    Help - MacBook 13” 2011 updates needed

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 10:12 AM PST

I have a 13" MacBook (purchased brand new in 2011). I had some issues in late 2015 and took it to a local repair shop to fix because the screen was just blue when I turned it on. They were able to get it working, however I was unable to perform updates after that for some reason. It's been years and now I cannot even access the internet. I've never taken it to an actual Apple store, but does anyone know whether they would be able to install all of the back-dated updates to bring it up to date again?

I'm not a tech-smart person, so I really don't know where to begin.
