[RANT] Apple really made Spotlight worse in Big Sur

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 01:53 PM PST

    • It doesn't show the "embedded" preview by default anymore (and the gained extra space is not used for anything)
    • The "Return" behaviour is now inconsistent and dumb: sometimes it will open the file/folder, other times it will open the embedded preview, requiring an additional "Return" to actually open the result
    • "Return" is also quite buggy: sometimes it simply doesn't work at all
    • The cmd+L and cmd+D shortcuts were removed, for absolutely no reason. They were very useful
    • There are always some search suggestions, even disabling "Siri Suggestions" in the Spotlight preferences, and they always appear near the top result. Pretty useless and dumb IMHO

My only question here is: WHY?

It was working perfectly fine until Catalina and now I just had to switch to Alfred to get something functional. I really don't understand how someone could think that making these changes was a good idea

Will M1 optimized apps install automatically when available?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 07:42 AM PST

I was wondering if M1 optimized apps will automatically update on new macs through the app store or people should be aware and download it again?

MAC mini with intel i5 6core or MAC mini with M1 chip

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 12:54 AM PST

    hello guys,

in the future i want to learn swift to code applications for the apple ecosystem. But i don't know which mac mini i should get as a software engineer.

the difference between these models is that you can run x86 applications and have a virtual machine for windows on the intel version(but i have an windows pc already). Also it supports upgradable ram/ssd.

But the M1 chip is way more powerful and maybe better for the future?! but doesn't support upgradable ram....

do you guys think the RAM makes a huge difference?

i would pick the 8gb ram model.

The price is nearly the same. Thats the reason why i am speculating.

Feature Request: SideCar+ (use iPad as eCpu/eGpu)

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 06:36 PM PST

Considering the large intel MacOS user base and also a large iPad user base, Why not better utilize both during this transition?

I envision plugging in my iPad to the Intel MacBook and utilizing it's A series processor for certain tasks. Depending on the workflow, certain professionals would like this feature to better utilize existing hardware. While it may not be as good as having an M1 Mac, but it could help with the transition.

I could see this be limited to certain Macs and certain iPads. Maybe A12 and above and 2017 macs or later.

Developers removing macOS access for their iOS apps.

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 09:47 PM PST

Has anyone noticed since the M1 machines have come out that more and more iOS apps that were available on the macOS App Store on day 1 are now slowly being removed?

Why would companies opt out of their apps being available on macOS, especially when they don't have a macOS variant of their app which would understandbily suffer from their iOS counterparts being available as well on the same machine?

I find this super annoying. It seems all of the top iOS apps either started out on day 1 already not available or are now being slowly pulled from being available on macOS.

It's almost pointless now to make it a point about iOS apps being available on macOS when all the ones that seriously matter have been pulled by their developers.

Apple not providing any support while your OS is Catalina

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 11:04 PM PST

I posted rather a large essay earlier but I have just been told that Catalina is no longer supported as an OS if you are having issues. To get any form of support you must update to Big Sur despite software and plug-ins not be compatible as of yet.

Thoughts? and is this even legal?

Is there a way to get Garageband, etc, for Catalina anymore?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 08:46 PM PST

My MacBook Pro is a mid-2012 Retina 15", so unsupported but Big Sur apparently. Not the end of the world...but! I can't seem to download certain apps anymore from the app store, such as Garageband, etc, because they require Big Sur. So suddenly it feels like my Mac has just been severely handicapped because I can't seem to find any legal ways to get the compatible software.

Does anyone know any solutions or workarounds?

    Apple apps avoiding your VPN?

    Posted: 23 Nov 2020 02:23 AM PST

Known and unknown issues in MacOS that Apple support is failing to address properly

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 09:36 PM PST

I have a been a longtime Mac user ever since Leopard and found recently Apple's support for MacOS recently quite cavalier. (Sorry this is an absolute essay but it is really a joke)

I have raised three issues (the first being a known issue) up with Apple support only to these issues not be taken seriously. The first relates the AUValTool (Audio Unit Validation Tool) which is script incorporated into the kernel to validate first and third party plug-ins for use in Logic and Final Cut. Since the new permissions system that was implemented in Catalina, this has been an issue because this script does not have the ability to launch and validate plug-ins as there no bypass built into the script for Gatekeeper. Subsequently this has got even more difficult with Big Sur because the Gatekeeper permissions have gone even further and require complete overhaul in how the plug-in is installed. In speaking to a senior advisor, they said 'developers need to make sure they develop for the changes within the OS'. This is completely ignorant of the fact that A) audio units are Apple's own proprietary API within Core Audio so they are developed to an existing Apple approved architecture standard and B) for these plug-ins to work within MacOS they need to be validated which can not be achieved with the script not having the necessary GateKeeper permissions.

Secondly, I had discovered that the scaling function within Screen Sharing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_Sharing) doesn't work with sharing a 16:10 ratio (Macbook Pro Retina) to a 16:9 (Mac Mini/Pro). I was told for weeks that there was something wrong with the hardware (having to reset the SMC, NVram, native HDMI port was broken) and even told to see if the issue was happening in Safe Boot. The Safe Boot thing is completely irrelevant as you can't connect to any server while in safe boot and the Apple support team should have known that. I reported this while Catalina was still the primary OS as Big Sur had not been released yet, only to be told that moving to Big Sur would fix this (went to Big Sur still doesn't work, went back to Catalina on Time Machine) and the fact that this software hasn't had an update since November 2014 (according to the Wikipedia). In speaking to Apple support they have just told me that I have to upgrade back up to Big Sur to provide system logs even though the app hasn't been updated in Big Sur even though I provided those logs when Catalina was the most up to date OS. The senior also just advised me to change the resolution of the MacBook Pro, yet she didn't know that it's impossible to do that anymore as it was removed from the display preferences. Yet again wasting my time with troubleshooting when it's a software bug.

The third ticket which is the most concerning of all the issues I have is using a Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter that crashed the CoreAudio driver. For people that don't know, CoreAudio and subset is Apple's proprietary audio drivers that make up the entire Apple lineup of products produce sound. When I had a Macbook Pro connected to a Mac Mini via ethernet, both devices detected each other as audio input and output devices in the Sound system preferences and automatically selects it (I think this could be apart of the AVB standard which is incorporated in the MacOS kernel as it allows 16 channels bi-directionally through the Thunderbolt). As it was automatically selected as an audio device, it immediately crashed the drivers on the Macbook Pro and the CoreAudio process would show up as not-responding in Activity Monitor. Even after force quiting the process and it would automatically relaunch and crash again because its a major part of the OS (it's a Daemon App). This would loop and cause my CPU capacity to go to maximum to the point where it caused a kernel panic and crashed MacOS completely. The kernel panic happened in two instances, the first was when the CPU was just stuck in that loop of the non-responsive apps and the second was when I unplugged the Thunderbolt Ethernet adapter.

In talking to Apple support they have pointed this to being a hardware issue which I find fairly hard to believe as I have had Audinate Dante (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dante_(networking)) AoE drivers and programs installed ever since they were released and never had any issues in any of those Thunderbolt ports with this exact same adapter and cables (Cat5e and Cat6a) and even after this was happening. Considering that the Thunderbolt standard has been on nearly every Mac since 2011 this covers an insane amount of devices, this is highly concerning as the potential for this cause issues everywhere and Apple's support failed to realize this at all. Most Thunderbolt 2 and 3 dock include a RJ45 connector and would use the same Thunderbolt drivers which could have the potential to crash vast amounts of devices. I am hoping that publicly bringing this out it will be seen by a senior Apple engineering employee who will take this seriously. If anyone has any contact with anyone in the engineering department I would be happy to talk to them about this as the support and senior advisors really have no clue. Also has anyone experienced similar issues?

    TIA

EDIT: Happy to include screenshots showing what I am on about if people are confused

EDIT: Apple is refusing any support while I am still running Catalina even though the APIs in question haven't been updated in Big Sur

Bookmarks in Safari loads slower/lag after Big Sur - Safari version 14.0.1

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 04:09 PM PST

    Hi all,

Does anybody have this issue where Bookmarks in Safari loads slower/lag after Big Sur? Issue is more prevalent if you have a lot of bookmarks i.e. a folder with less bookmarks loads faster than a folder with a lot more bookmarks.

This is for Safari version 14.0.1.

Interestingly, Bookmarks Sidebar exhibits no slowness/lag (which I'm using as an alternative for the moment).

Googling/search in Reddit yields no results.

    Issues after Big sur update

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 08:34 PM PST

After I got the Big Sur update, my Macbook pro-2019 turns black for a couple of seconds at random times. I did delete a bunch of things to free up storage to update it, and it might be because of that, but I really don't know what's causing it. Any advice would help.

I've had this for a while, but I'll sign in to iMessage, try to compose a message (it recognises my contact names) then kicks me out. This is on the 2017 MBP 13 inch, Touch Bar, 4 TB ports.

I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max for which iMessage works fab which is weird.

can't find saved iMessages in Big Sur

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 02:12 PM PST

I used to be able to look in my library and search the persons name and find our old conversations. Since upgrading to Big Sur I just noticed that I am unable to do that? Is this new? Is there a way to retrieve those messages? I want Catalina back :(

    Big Sur update disappeared?

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 05:51 PM PST

Hey guys, I'm trying to install Big Sur from a mid 2014 13' MBP running macOS Mojave 10.14.6. Last week when the update was released Software Update sent the me notification that it was available for download. I ignored it then because I read about the crammed servers and all the download problems, thought that it was best to wait a little.

I'm trying to install it now but the update disappeared and it was replaced with the Catalina update on Software Update. I tried to download it directly from the App Store but it just says "Update not found. The requested version of macOS is not available". I have tried restarting my device, the "reset-ignored" command using Terminal, and resetting the NVRAM and SMC to no luck. Any ideas?

"There was an error connecting to the apple id server"

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 04:19 PM PST

Hello. ever since I upgraded my macbook pro to BigSur 11.0.1, I haven't been able to log into anything apple related. I can't get into FaceTime or the App store, even if I try to log myself out of Find My Mac, it won't let me. I get this message for whatever I try to log into or open: "There was an error connecting to the apple id server

Date and time are correct, I restarted my computer, PRAM reset, reset my default Keychains, it doesn't give me the option to sign out of the app store, it won't search for any new updates

    Anyone have any ideas?

Macbook air, always high CPU & Overheating (getting very slow) since Catalina. Desperate :)

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 03:42 PM PST

    Hi everybody,

I know the issue is pretty common around (at least, I found so many different posts just by googling) but still couldn't find any solution.

To make it short, I got a Macbook Air 2018 (16gb ram) which used to be super smooth until I upgraded to Catalina. From that moment (and nothing changed upgrading now to Big Sur) I really can't work anymore. As soon as I try to open a couple of applications at the same time, or even just some tabs in chrome (switching to safari didn't help) it gets super slow, fans go crazy and my cpu very high. (Windowserver is often among the bad ones).

I'm attaching a couple of screen as an example, right now I have Chrome open with few tabs (one of them being a twitch video) and that's what happens.

I'm very frustrated as I know many people with 2015 macbooks (and even earlier) using themmacbooks just fine, while mine looks like it has 30 years :).

I tried all these guidelists (disable this, disable that, reset smc, pram) but nothing. If anyone would be happy to spend 5 minutes to try to help I would be super happy and grateful. Thank you!
