Is there a point in getting an Apple TV if you have a smart TV?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 06:35 AM PST

I just got a smart TV for the first time. It has the Apple TV app and it supports AirPlay. I was wondering, what more would an Apple TV device offer in these circumstances? I really like the Apple ecosystem and products, but I'm really confused about the plus-value of the Apple TV in this situation.

    Thanks.

Dolby Vision or HDR on LG CX OLED tv?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 05:20 PM PST

Just bought an LG CX 65" and am trying to get the best picture. Tried following RTings.com settings but since most of my TV watching flows through my Apple 4K TV it seems to not work as intended. I noticed a MAJOR difference between 4K Dolby Vision 60hz and 4K HDR 60hz. Dolby seems incredibly dark, which isn't always bad but really lacks the POP of HDR.

To try and get a better idea I put on Mad Max Fury Road which seems to be made for HDR and even though I prefer a somewhat darker image it was hard to argue that the HDR setting looked much better.

Anyone have experience with this combo? Thoughts on preferences or settings to maybe get best of both worlds?

    Question about Apple TV purchases

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 09:14 PM PST

Hey, I'm thinking of buying the LOTR Extended Editions on Apple TV, but I was just wondering - if I buy these now and a 4K version is released in the future, will I have access to the 4K versions?

Apple TV 4K is perfectly capable of 4K @ 24fps HDR VP9 Profile 2 (YouTube)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:58 PM PST

    Whirlpool HDR Plex testing

Well it seems the ATV 4K is capable of VP9.p2 decoding with HDR output using Plex App testing.

4K@60fps (and 50fps probably) VP9.p2 is too much, but it seems everything else HDR plays back just fine.

VP9 Profile 2 is what Google uses for their HDR YouTube encodings.

So in reality what ATV 4K users need is a properly supported HDR capable YT App from Google themselves. The ATV 4K hardware is pretty capable.

    Best settings for my TV

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 02:56 PM PST

So I'm trying to dial in the best settings for my TV (Sony X900H) with the Apple TV 4K. Should I set Chroma to 4:4:4 or 4:2:0? I don't have an option to use 4:2:2.

My other question is regarding motion and judder. My TV has settings to eliminate judder from 24fps content. If I set the match options for match frame rate, should I even bother using the built in options to remove judder? It's a tad confusing because I've read that you have to set Motionflow settings to min to eliminate judder from external devices. Any ideas?

Why isn’t it possible to change the volume of the Apple TV from my iPhone?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:41 PM PST

I understand there is no IR in my iPhone but couldn't they technically just add volume on the software side and I'd keep my tv at max volume and then control it from the control center?

See what I pay for :)

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 04:39 PM PST

Is there a way to see movies and tv shows that are only available through the Apple TV+ subscription, I feel like I'm paying for a product that I can't 'find'. It's cool how everything is integrated however when I click a movie and it asks me to download another app where I can view for free or start another subscription with another company. it's a little confusing.

I went on the Apple TV app and seen the Mandalorian and thought 'yaay' so I clicked it and I have to pay ANOTHER subscription (Disney+) to actually watch it... but I am a subscriber to Apple TV and I am on the Apple TV app, but I still have to pay. it's a little confusing. 😕

So yeah, is there a way of seeing all the content that I'm paying for through the Apple TV subscription!

    Thanks 🙏

Did Apple start lowering streaming quality in Australia for AppleTV+?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:50 PM PST

So, I decided to make use of the trial for ATV+. As I'm watching the shows (in 4K) I've noticed that it constantly drops in quality. As if the internet is not fast enough. But watching 4K content on Prime or YouTube has no issues.

Does ATV+ required faster internet (mine averages around 40mbps)? Or did they lower the quality like they did in Europe?

I tried switching to 1080p. But there was this weird ghosting/echo effect to the picture whenever there's movement.

1 year subscription but it switched back to 7 day free trial?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 12:39 PM PST

I bought the new iPad Air on friday and activated my AppleTV+ subscription immediately after getting it and it worked great so far. Now me and the gf watched 9 episodes of Servant and didn't run into any trouble but as soon as we wanted to start the 10th episode all I'm getting is "Start your free 7 day trial". I've logged in and out on multiple devices already and deleted and reinstalled the app on my Smart TV too. Anybody encountered the same issue and has a solution for that? Thanks in advance!

Suddenly can’t output to 2 devices at once, after resetting AppleTV

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 08:48 AM PST

I have an Apple TV 4 Normally I output to the Samsung sound bar (via toslink cable from TV)

And also output to a HomePod.

Recently when I select to toggle the HomePods output on, it turns the TV's output off.

I used to be able to play them both at once. Any ideas?

Is there something in settings I could have missed when resetting the Apple TV?

How to add more connected apps?

    Posted: 01 Nov 2020 07:10 AM PST

Hi so I want to add more connected apps on my  TV app. On iPhone 6 Plus running latest version of iOS 12. I've already done this for Disney+ and would like to do it for other apps such as Netflix, Prime Video etc. I also want to know how to do it on my dads iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 14.0.1.
