Apple TV+ Web Experience is Terrible

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:06 PM PST

I decided to watch Apple TV+ from a Windows PC, as I would for any other service, and was floored by how poor the experience is.

    • No search, no list, no categories, no sorting.

As far as I can tell there is no way to search for any content on Apple TV+ without using Google to do the search for the specific show you want to view. When you view the Apple TV+ page it's a huge list of full screen banners that doesn't even contain all the shows available.

    • Autoplay has obvious bugs

When watching For All Mankind it attempted to play Season 1 Episode 10 after Season 1 Episode 1. I assume they are using a simple alphabetical sort to decide the next thing to play. Did literally nobody QA a show with more than 9 episodes?

    • Image quality is poor

It has no identification for the resolution it is using, but text is a little fuzzy and image quality is poor. 720 maybe?

    • No recommendations

This is kind of the same point as #1, but it doesn't seem to have a good mechanism for recommending new content.

I completely understand that the Apple ecosystem is tightly integrated, but this is a streaming service in 2020. Amazon, Disney, HBO, Netflix, and Hulu have all can do this - on all platforms. How can Apple not get this right? I just put this here in the hopes that someone at Apple might read it.

AirPlay Music and watch TV at the same time

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 04:23 AM PST

So I have my stereo HomePods set up as my default audio output for my ATV4K.

I used to be able to watch something (usually sport) and AirPlay music to the HomePods separately.

With the update and the default option I can no longer do that.

Is there a way around it without having to deselect the HP's as the default audio output?

I see why we need a hardware update now

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 10:08 PM PST

So for the last few years like other I've been waiting for an update since the ATV 4k and many often ask "but why". I finally decided to wait no longer and updated my ATV Original 4th gen to ATV 4k.

While I knew there was some updates I didn't realize how big of a jump it was, I mean of course a lot of the "usual" content from Netflix, Disney+, YT etc was marginal. I did some side by side comparison and it was "barely noticeable. Where I can really see difference was air playing and viewing network content from plex and VLC which I use often. Seeing time difference of 5~6 seconds down to almost 1. I was so impress and agree this is amazing but can't even imagine what a upgraded chipset could do especially these load times were only for 720 content.

I mean that on top of actually using Apple Arcade more now with the bundle. I can see where games like the pathless and oceanhorn 2 could be smoother (both skips frames here and there a bit).

    Purchasing TV Complete Seasons

    Posted: 22 Nov 2020 02:35 AM PST

Not sure where to post this, but previously if a complete seasons/box sets were on special you could purchase them as such on iTunes with the discounted price. Now however with the Apple TV app when you search for a box set on special I.e. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is currently $24.99. How can you purchase at this price? On the Apple TV app on Mac it only shows individual seasons at full price! No I don't want to purchase via My Apple TV cause I have a Local account on my ATV (I'm not US based) but do have a US iTunes/Apple TV account. I usually top up with gift cards.

Good Movies For Dolby Atmos on HomePod

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 03:30 PM PST

So far from my collection, Air Force One and Batman 89 have really impressed me with Dolby Atmos on HomePod. What are some other movies with great Dolby Atmos?

    History Channel app problems

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 02:59 PM PST

My History Channel app keeps going out of sync. The sound will skip and repeat and then is out of sync with the video. Anyone else have this problem/a way to fix it?

LG OLED not turning on with Remote

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 11:34 AM PST

Hi, recently upgraded my TV. Went from an LG OLED55B7V from 2017 to a new OLED55GX10.

Now, on the previous TV the Apple TV remote would always turn the TV on, and usually off via infrared. This new TV, nothing. Literally does not turn the new TV on, but usually does turn it off.

    Am I missing something?

    Thanks.

    Siri remote - underrated gem

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 08:29 AM PST

I know this is probably a day late and a dollar short. But lately I've been relying on Siri to play content directly rather than scrolling through menus, and it's been a mini-revelation for me.

    Subtitles vs Closed Captioning?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 06:55 AM PST

I'm looking for a way to just turn on subtitles, is this possible or am I stuck with full closed captioning for audio other than dialogue?
