New MacBook Air 2020 battery health at 89% 3 months in

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:06 PM PST

Title. Is that normal? I mostly use it plugged in. I mainly use safari. The only heavy work the laptop handles is running zoom around 3 hours a day. Did I screw myself by always using it plugged in? I just don't see a point in unplugging it when I'm working at my desk. But if that screwed the battery up, what do I do to prevent further battery health degradation?

My experience with the MacBook Air 2020 - share yours?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 12:47 PM PST

    July 2020:

My Macbook Pro late 2017 breaks and I get the Air 2020 for studying and coding. I informed myself online beforehand and came to the conclusion that the MacBook Air 2020 with the i5 upgrade would be the best choice considering my monetary situation and my interest in best performance (software and hardware) per buck. I knew about the cooling issues but hadn't realised how serious they were.

    Fast forward two months:

It would have been a great buy if the cooling issues weren't that big of an issue. Since the day I first started it up I regularly got CPU temperatures above 90 degrees celsius when on group video calls or having more than one program running. On idle it rarely goes below 60.

Handing it over to get it fixed (I even have Apple Care) they tell me: "It is only throwing yellow errors and we only pay for the red ones, you can have your fan replaced for 250 bucks but you'll have to pay that out of your pocket." At least they offered to clean it and apply new thermal paste which is nice of them but obviously doesn't fix the problem.

I tackled the problem by uninstalling "Fanny" so I can't see my temps anymore and when it crashes I just tell myself: "The CPU will burn up under these temps within the next months so I'll get a fix that falls under warranty and that's gonna cost them more than fixing this right now."

The only thing that keeps me from selling it and getting another laptop is that during the semester I don't have time to spend weeks or even months without a laptop until I can afford a new one.

    To put this in perspective:

The MacBook Pro that I had for some two and a half years broke a couple of months after the warranty ended – mainboard issue with a sky-high repair cost. I used that laptop every day working for 8 hours and it did a really great job, I've had experiences with laptops that break with half that usage after only six months but I was still kind of disappointed, it just made me feel like I fell right into that "electronics break right after warranty ends" trap.

This is why I bought Apple Care for the new Air and was very disappointed when my "repair" took a week and all they did for me is apply some thermal paste and tell me I would have to cover for something that is obviously a fault in their engineering. I really would have expected more from Apple.

    Conclusion:

I do not really like the MacBook Air 2020. However, I think the Air 2020 is a great laptop for people who do not use it for demanding tasks but only for every-day use and do not care much about high performance or high temperatures. Most will probably not get unlucky and a broken fan out of the box so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Does anybody else have similar experiences or just the opposite that they would like to share? I'm really interested in your stories!

    My MacBook won't start

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 09:28 PM PST

It's from circa 2013 or so, not really sure.

Anyway, I put it down on a wet floor by accident, and it won't start.

I tried pressing the Shift/Control/Option and the power button, the first few times it would partially start, like I would hear the fan get loud and then turn off, and a couple times I heard the startup sound but the screen wouldn't start up.

Anyway, I now have it in a v shape, facing down onto my bed, and the power is plugged in, and the little light on the power chord is green.

Can dust and crumbs in hinge cause Macbook to make crackling sound when opening and shutting the lid?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 05:38 AM PST

Whenever I open or shut my MacBook, it makes a crackling sound and it has been doing this for the past week or so. I have a 2020 MBA. On the bottom part of the hinge there is a lot of dust and crumbs stuck and I have no idea how to get it out. Could that be causing the crackling sound? Has anyone else had this issue?

    External display not 1080p resolution

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:34 PM PST

Hello, I am trying to use an external monitor with my 2018 MacBook Pro. The external monitor has a broken HDMI port, so I have been using a DVI to HDMI converter to display images. When connected to my PC the resolution is perfect. However, when I connect my MacBook, it tops out at 1360x768. Any solutions?

Edit: When the HDMI on the monitor was not broken, the resolution from the MacBook was fine.

    Thanks!

    A14X Bionic Leaks

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 10:02 AM PST

There is a leak of the new A14X bionic chip which has 8 cores, 1.8ghz processor thats boosts up to 3.1ghz. Here are the benchmarks for it (i dont know which device the benchmarks was run on) on GeekBench 5

    Single Core: 1634

    Multi Core: 7220

These are quite impressive scores, and I am wondering what this could mean for the future of Macbook Silicon.

Mid 2013 Macbook Air - Major Issue.

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:07 AM PST

Okay. From one day to another, the Macbook won't power on anymore. We tried every possible key-combination, smc resets, everything. Reconnected Battery. Brought it into a repair shop, which said it should be the SMC. Got Replaced. Still no Sign of Life. Battery got Changed, no sign of life. There is absolutely no sign of life. Not even the slightest Fanspin. The Macbook still "Charges" with amber light.

Now it's at a 2nd Repairshop, they said it should be the Processor.

Anyone has any other Ideas what it could be?

    MBP13 2017 vs MBA2020 (core I5)

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 04:02 AM PST

I have a MBA that's I bought two months ago for college. Today someone contacted me and offered to exchange their MBP13 2017 with my MBA because they said they need a lighter laptop. They also said their MBP is worth more

Now I don't like my MBA much because of its color.

Is it worth more? Should I keep or exchange?

Worth it to wait for the new 13-inch MBPs with Silicon chip?

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 03:23 AM PST

I was THISCLOSE to getting the latest 13-inch MBP a few hours ago but held off because the color I wanted, silver, was not in stock.

When I went to Apple's site to compare all of the models, I was thrown off by the message to preorder and got a bit confused, only the learn that they are refreshing them in the next two weeks.

I saw a photo of a redesign and it looks so cool but not sure it's real. Anyway, will this new MBP be significantly better or should I just go ahead and get a high end current model now?

Replacing my Mid 2014 Macbook Pro Retina!

    Posted: 06 Nov 2020 01:48 AM PST

Hey! I'm thinking about getting a new MacBook and I need some help. I momentarily have the mid 2014 MacBook Pro Retina (15 Inch, 2.2 GHz IntelCore 7, 16GB, and 250 GB Storage) I'm looking for a replacement that's not too pricey (My budget is 2000 with a Student discount) and will replace my mid 2014 in a way where I don't downgrade.

I study Visual Effects so I use programs like Maya and I render (But I do have another computer for that so it's not the end of the world if my budget doesn't include an amazing experience when it comes to that) - But I do want to be able to edit in Adobe After Effects (Motion Graphics and also on occasion video)

What are your recommendations? I was looking at the "APPLE MACBOOK PRO 13 RETINA TOUCH BAR I5 256GB (2019)" and the "APPLE MACBOOK PRO 13 RETINA TOUCH BAR I5 512GB" but I haven't dug deep enough, that's why i'm asking here! - Also not a fan of the butterfly keyboards haha.

    Thanks so much!
