Catalina island wallpaper's light is in the wrong side for sunrise

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:49 AM PDT

I started using Catalina last week and the wallpaper with that island is beautiful. In the evening, the light on the right hand side of the island is ok for the sunset, but the light on the island is still on the right in the morning for the sunrise, which makes no sense because it should be on the left...

    Mds_stores taking up 700MB (!) - how can I fix?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 02:54 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

I've googled this but a lot of the answers I'm seeing I simply don't understand.

I just updated to the latest version of Catalina and I've had some crashes ever since. I've run etrecheck to see if there are any issues and it says my CPU is being drained. The biggest culprit is mds_stores, which is using 700MB as I speak.

I know this is Spotlight, but is there an easy way just to fix the issue or troubleshoot why it's using so much cpu? Any help appreciated.

Can anyone suggest a macbook pro model for under $400 or $500?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 01:15 AM PDT

I need a new laptop since my mac atm is a 2010 11 in. Mba with a core 2 duo and 2gb of ram, its painfully slow, it's temperature rises to 60°C whenever I open an app, so I can't use it for online classes because most of the time zoom is open while I answer a quiz in safari, I want a mbp that can still support big sur(that means retina models), that is powerful enough to edit videos and photos(my sister needs to edit them for school), if you know any mbp retina models that I can use please comment it below, Thank you! <3

Boot Snow Leopard in recovery mode when FileVault is on?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 09:26 PM PDT

So I recently bought a lot of 6 Mac Minis. They all have Snow Leopard installed on them however 2 of the 6 Mac Minis have FileVault on and the only user account on each computer is Password Protected AND FileVault enabled.

I have tried booting into recovery, but NO keys seem to be responsive to the computer until it boots into the OS. Any ideas on how I can wipe the HD's to put a fresh copy of Snow Leopard on them? I am running out of ideas other than taking out the hard drives and replacing them.

How to install Garageband on El Captain?

    Posted: 06 Sep 2020 12:58 AM PDT

So basically I bought a second hand 2007 mac which the hard drive got wiped. Couldn't get it working until I bought an ebay usb loader which worked.

I bought it mainly for garageband and I can't download cause the OS is too low. Is there a way to get it? Even an older version of garageband? I've heard of people upgrading their OS, but I need to buy a new CPU and probably more ram which I will do if I can't find a fix. Thanks. :)

Complex Automator Scripts Bogging Down? Help or Alternatives?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 11:54 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I've created a pair of automator scripts to reprocess pdfs for my Kindle. These split the images and text, process them separately with different constraints, and then shuffle them back together in alternating pages. These aren't ideal but it rasterizes and compresses images and scanned text without rasterizing original text. They vary in the degree of compression.

So that each step can complete before the next begins, I've had to give each step its own shell script.

For whatever reason step 4 takes at least 10 times as long when it's step 3 of 7 than it takes when it's its own terminal command or its own workflow. Same input, and similar output with the same byte count. Sometimes it takes more than an hour, and sometimes it triggers abort trap 6. What is going on here, and can I avoid it within Automator or by using another automation tool?

I'm still using Mojave due to app compatibility issues, but this should also apply to Catalina.

Using Console, checking for Automator, I get errors including: "Failed to copy signing info for [number], responsible for [the script in question]."

But ever since I installed windows os with boot camp on the other partition to try something (Which i deleted already), my MBA didn't wake as usual once it went to sleep. iMac occasionally sleeps, how to prevent?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 04:55 PM PDT

Mid-2010 iMac running High Sierra. It's hosting several services (Pi-hole in a VirtualBox VM, HomeBridge, iTunes library) and running BOINC in the background. Via the GUI, I have the Energy Saver prefs set to Never Sleep. Maybe once or twice a month it sleeps, nothing in the Console logs about it. Of course, having a server sleep is not very useful. It really messes up the VM, as it loses time sync and doesn't pick up the correct time again from VB.

I'm wondering if there is a command line command that would interrogate the sleep system and show if anything is set that is causing this. I was looking at the output from pmset, such as pmset -g assertions and pmset -g assertionslog.

    Any ideas here? Thanks!

File Vault Hosed Me! I Need To Erase My SSD and Reinstall MacOS. Please Confirm If My Steps Are Correct.

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:23 PM PDT

    Continuation from this post. https://www.reddit.com/r/MacOS/comments/in20f9/mbp_shuts_off_only_when_trying_to_boot_into_safe/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf

File Vault is creating a loop problem (it won't finish decrypting before it has a kernel panic and reboots, which automatically makes it begin from 0%. Yet I can't stop the process.) There is no other way for me to move forward. I'm going to have to completely wipe the SSD and reinstall macOS.

    ————–

I have never had to do this so I would appreciate if you could please confirm my steps before I hosed myself even more.

    1. Cloned drive using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external. Note: I cannot make a back up using Time Machine. It screams that the drive is decrypting, which I cannot stop.

    2. Also currently loading macOS to another volume in the external.

    3. Open disk utility on the Mac. Erase the SSD.

    Now here's where I get hazy ...

    1. With a completely blank SSD now in the machine, will I be able to boot up the Mac and have it see the external drive?

    2. If yes, can I then direct the Mac into recovery mode and have it reinstall macOS on the main SSD.

    3. If no, what is the process to get macOS back onto the main SSD?

    4. Once macOS is back on the MBP, what's the easiest way to get CCC to re-image the entire SSD from the back up copy? Since macOS will be a completely fresh install, carbon copy cloner (nor any of my other tools) will be on the machine.

Anybody else unable to ever properly eject an external SSD?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:17 PM PDT

I have the newest 13" MBP and I have a Samsung T5 SSD. When I plug the T5 in, I have less than one minute to copy files and quickly eject it. After that, it can only be force ejected. As far as I can tell, the problem is because spotlight will start trying to index the SSD, but kill -9ing the process hasn't worked for me - it can always start a new one before I can safely eject the SSD. So my only real options are to force eject it or sign out of my user.

It's a serious buzzkill and if I had known it would be like this I would have ponied up for the 2TB internal SSD.

Am I alone with this problem? Any solutions I might not have thought of?

Can I link Touch Bar media controls to Spotify exlusively?

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:09 PM PDT

Hi, is there any possibility to link TB media controls to just one preferred app? It's practically useless when TB's media controls link to any app playing any media, i.e. Safari when some video auto-plays, or just a damn chime rings when you sign a transfer in internet banking, or some video plays in a chat in FB Messenger app (which is horrible by the way). The worst part is, that it stays linked to last active app, so when you scrolled a few minutes past some (auto)played video on Twitter, and you press pause/play, that damn Twitter video from minutes ago replays 🤦‍♂️

I just want it to be linked with Spotify app – can I work it out somehow?

Using encrypted .dmg to securely delete files (fusion drive)

    Posted: 05 Sep 2020 10:09 AM PDT

I am trying to find the safest way of securely deleting files from my iMac (2017 fusion drive running High Seirra)

I don't want to download third-party software if I can avoid it and while I've use terminal commands before, they make me nervous. I have seen so many variations of the 'rm' command, I don't know what's right (rm -P, rm -R, rm -rf, sudo, no sudo, etc etc)

I came across the idea of creating an encrypted disk image, filling it with all the files I want to delete, and deleting the whole image so even if the files are recovered, they will be encrypted.
    https://www.groovypost.com/howto/securely-delete-files-mac/
    (Third suggestion from this website.)

I haven't found any other posts backing up this idea... Does this sound like a viable solution? Would doing it multiple times have negative affects on my computer? My only other idea is to forget about trying to delete anything securely, and simply ensuring the drive is wiped professionally when the time comes. Thank you in advance for your advice, it is much appreciated
