Mojave 2020-005 Security Update released on Sep 24th, is causing major issues for some users!

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 12:19 AM PDT

The Mojave 2020-005 Security Update released on September 24th is causing major issues for some users.

I have reported on many security update issues in the past and this one is more serious.

Just a few of the issues caused by this update.

    • 1. Memory issues - Reports of large increases of memory usage = no free memory and a large amount of compressed memory.
    • 2. Slow boot & High fan speed
    • 3. System slowness / stalling in finder
    • 4. New local user can not be created through Users & Groups.
    • 5. Migration assistant crashes to login window when started.
    • 6. Large amounts of system.log entries - Class asn1SetToken is implemented in both /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/StoreServices.framework/Versions/A/StoreServices
    • 7. Errors when using tmutil localsnapshot /
    • 8. Error when running softwareupdate -l (not sure if it causes any issues with the softwareupdate binary)
    • 9. System locks up in Desktop & Screen Saver > Screen Saver when trying to select a picture type screen saver.
    • 10. WindowServer Process using 4 times amount of memory. Should be anywhere between 40-125MB after the update it jumps to 400MB
    • 11. cDock 4 - Dock customization app becomes unusable.
    • 12. Menu bar sometimes does not change after switching from applications back to the finder.

I've included workarounds and fixes inside my article. I will also be updating it as more info comes in.

Lost a pw protected Note when I upgraded and restored from a backup.

    Posted: 27 Sep 2020 01:43 AM PDT

The only note that is missing is the note that was locked. No other notes were locked, and no other notes are missing after the upgrade. My only thought is to enter the time machine and randomly try to find a back up in which the note is still present. This is of upmost importance and I am offering Internet that-a-boys-and-girls for any help.

    MacBook OS Help

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:27 PM PDT

I bought a White Macbook 2008 A1181, with OS X El Capitan. I can stay safe by not going into tedious sites but how would I get programs that work from the store. ( if I have to use packages, I have plenty experience with Linux. )

Will bad internet connection affect my install?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:34 AM PDT

I am doing a fresh install of Catalina on my computer and during the download my internet connection dropped two or 3 times. The install itself never quit but it just kept going. I'm wondering if these drops in connection will affect the install and cause some instability within the os or will it be fine as it is?

    I accidentally quit Spotlight

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 02:12 PM PDT

So I quit spotlight through the 'CleanMyMac' app, how can I turn it back on without restarting the computer? CMD+Space shortcut doesn't open it up and the icon is gone from where it stood.

This is probably super easy but I couldn't find any help from Google

How to not to save all messages on Mac

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:19 AM PDT

Hi, I am trying to free up some space on my Mac today and I realize that I have over 40Gb worth of messages in my computer. I have Messages in iCloud enabled, and I would like to ask what should I do to still keep all the messages on iCloud, and on my phone, but to keep only the most recent messages on my Mac since I don't have much storage left. I'm using Catalina 10.15.7.

Thank you so much in advance.

    bookmarks from Safari to Firefox?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 01:33 PM PDT

TL;DR: How would I easily transfer part of my bookmarks from Safari to Firefox? While I'm at it, any easy way to transfer tabs perhaps, maybe through pocket?

    ---------------------

Use case: Went from an ageing MacBook Air -> self-built windows PC -> MacBook Pro 2020. My "internet-usage" is built in and around firefox (bookmarks, extensions, firefox-account, ...).

When I wanted to use Firefox on the MB Pro, it became apparent that firefox is an extreme battery drain. I don't know what the technical reason could be (is every tab a different sandbox, running lots of code? Is Safari just extremely optimised in Mac OS? I'm not an IT person so I don't know). I used to think the short battery life on the MacBook Air was due to its age (which is partly true for sure, but now I'm guessing firefox didn't help). I definitely want to have Firefox closed while on battery only.

Seeing how much better the battery life was with Safari, I started using that again on the mac. There's a couple things I miss from firefox, and extensions aren't all that developed (or you have to pay for it), but it works fine and is a good browser as well.

If Firefox was a little more battery friendly, I would definitely still by using that as a main browser even on Mac. Especially since I'm still using windows PCs as well.

During the extended periods I'm only on the MB Pro, I regularly bookmark a tab or create a reading list. However, for cross-platform flexibility with the windows PC I prefer keeping my bookmarks synced and backed-up in Firefox and with the firefox account.

    What I do now is

    • import firefox bookmarks into Safari
    • Use Safari for a while, and add bookmarks in a separate folder
    • After some time, delete all Safari bookmarks except that one folder
    • Export that one folder
    • Import folder to firefox
    • Organise those bookmarks, and export Firefox bookmarks
    • Back to step one: Import full firefox bookmarks situation back into Safari

As for sharing tabs over browsers I use pocket. But it's not always working as expected it seems. For the short time I used it, it seemed a bit cumbersome for that.

Security update for Mojave freezes Mac

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:33 AM PDT

Hi everyone, Just wanted to say, that the latest security update (I guess released yesterday) makes my Mac freeze and run slowly.

Do you have the same problem?

Edit: A lot of apps don't work, too. They restart in a loop and give message: "There was a problem opening this app"

Edit 2: On boot, the loading bar is immediately full. There is basically no animation

Time Machine on my Windows 10 share (smb)

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:10 PM PDT

I'v built my own NAS with windows 10 shared disk, and I'm using SMB to use the files there.

I added 1 disk to make it a Time Machine, and shared it, then by a tutorial I found in the internet, I built dmg using the disk utility, in the smb path. But after few minutes it's fail and say time out.

I tried to change it from 900GB to 100GB and then to 10GB but all the time it's fail, so right now I got disk of 1TB and I connect it to my Mac every few days to backup, but it's not ideal.

Any help ? someone who tried that ?

what's the best anti virus for the macbook air?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:46 AM PDT

I have installed some stuff from unidentified developers so I was thinking I should probably get an anti virus. what's the best I can get?

also, since I'm a first time Mac user, do Macs really even need an anti virus protection?

    Videos stutter

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:30 AM PDT

Anyone else having problems with the "video" part of videos freezing for half a second every once in a while? The audio is fine it's just the image that stops and then resumes just as quickly.

Latest Catalina on a MBP 16 inch, it happens in YouTube on Chrome, in VLC, in QuickTime, doesn't matter.

Having major issues with Safari Cookies

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:22 AM PDT

I've encountered a few sites over the last few days (and an iOS app) that won't let me log in, access certain site features (help/support, etc) or generally function on sites because the sites keep telling me I need to make sure Safari is set to not block cookies.

I've checked and double checked and cookie blocking is definitely disabled. This is happening on my Mac (Big Sur beta, latest update safari) and my iPhone too (ios14)

Is it a bug? a feature? something else? It's driving me bananas!

multistroke freehand annotation in Catalina's Preview?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 11:01 AM PDT

Hi - it seems inconceivable that there's not a way to do this in Preview on 10.15: using the "drawing" annotation tool, I'm trying to draw, say, a capital letter "T" with the crossbar first. But after drawing the horizontal stroke, I can't start drawing a second stroke too close to the crossbar, to start the vertical stroke, because the pointer changes from a pen nib to a hand and instead of drawing a new line, the hand pulls the first line downwards. (In this case I'd have to draw the second stroke starting from the bottom, but some combinations of lines are very hard to plan in advance for this problem). This makes it impossible to put handwritten text notes onto a pdf document (I'm using an external graphics tablet, a Wacom intuos, but I think that's irrelevant, the same goes for the trackpad). Is there really not a setting where I can disable the "hand" so I can just draw freehand, or write freehand, without Preview dragging my previous pen strokes around all over the place? Thank you very much for any insight into this, I really need to do hand annotation on pdfs.

GPU Panic in Mid2012 MBP - anything that can be done?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 10:26 AM PDT

8 Years later, I'm finally getting vídeo problems on my mid2012 MacBook Pro. In the errors, it notes a GPU Panic/GPU Kernel panic.

I saw that there was a phase where NVIDIA cards were being repaired/replaced by Apple but that has passed.

Anything I can do to repair it or should I get a new computer? Apple noted that a mom and pops shop could replace the logic board but I imagine I might run into the same problem sooner or later and eat an upfront cost.

I've been running gfxCardStatus to stay on integrated graphics, versus the graphics card/dynamic switching. It works for the most part but occasionally it will stop working. Sometimes freezes on bootup too.
