    Introducing the Tech Support FAQ.

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 08:23 PM PDT

Today, we're announcing the Tech Support 'Frequently Asked Questions' (FAQ) wiki page. A group of our mods have done their best to include some initial answers to some commonly asked questions that appear in the daily support thread. The wiki page will start off rather small but hopefully over time we can (and will!) add more to the wiki page. However, we do ask that if you have a request for something to be added to that wiki - to please modmail us and we'll see if we can get it answered (or even better, if you have an answer to it already).

Will leave this post pinned for about a day, so if you have any requests for this wiki page, feel free to comment below. This FAQ will be linked in the daily tech support thread, too.

Does anybody else here not play games on their phone...ever?

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 10:21 AM PDT

I sometimes see a game that looks cool in the App Store. I download it, but then never play it. For whatever reason, mobile games just aren't appealing to me at all. Anybody else?

Will the iPhone 11’s drop in price when the 12 is announced/released?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 12:08 AM PDT

I've never upgraded when new phones came out but it's now time I need a new one and I am looking to get the 11 either way but obviously I would love if it became cheaper.

    Disabling find my friends?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:28 AM PDT

I'm proposing to my girlfriend next month, and am having a few of her friends up to surprise her afterwards. The problem is, they all have each other on find my friends.

Does anyone know of a way to disable, hide, or skew her find my friends so she wouldn't be able to see them driving the 2.5 hour drive? I know from their end they can turn off their locations, I just think that would be a little suspicious if they all did that!

Did iOS 14 remove the active timer from the Lock Screen?? Did it become a setting somewhere? Why, Apple? Why??

Does anyone know a way to record a mouvement in a game and replay it again and again on iphone (ios 14)

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:43 AM PDT

Let's say im on a computer and there is a parkour map. At the start of a spawn point i start recording my movements and when I flawlessly complete the parkour, i stop recording. The next time I do that, I start at a checkpoint then start the playback of my recording. It technically should go flawlessly.

My question is, is it possible to put all that into a phone and "afk" during a game, work or even applications.

TL;DR Can I record and playback actions on iphone?

Getting iPhone SE for my son: do those protective cases with built-in screen protectors work well?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:04 AM PDT

I'm looking at something like this for my son's soon-to-be new iPhone SE 2020:

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B087THT1SK/?coliid=I35UIV1BSCPWO3&colid=349HWGRPGP3TQ&psc=1&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it

It seems possibly easier than those stick-on screen protectors. But does a screen protector like this still work for sensitive touching of the screen, or would it make it a 'worse' touch screen? Does anyone have experience with something like this or a different recommendation? I would just buy a separate case and screen protector, but I'm a little worried about mixing and matching a case with a different screen protector, I've heard of compatibility issues. But this is my son's first phone, and I definitely want him to have both.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Is there a way to directly open search result on keyboard return?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 08:01 AM PDT

So, you know you can open the search by swiping down from the homescreen for example. If you then enter a text and it matches an app for example, you can just press go on the keyboard to open the app.

This is very convenience for one hand use, but it does not work if he doesn't find something on the phone and suggest a browser search. Then you only have search in the keyboard, which just closes the keyboard and you have to move your finger all the way up just for pressing the browser search. Quite hard if you use one hand. Sure you can use reachability, but that's an extra gesture and button press for such a simple thing.

Does anyone of you know a way around this? So that I just have to press once for a simple google search?

What are some bugs you encountered with the new release of iOS 14?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 07:39 AM PDT

Mine was that it would rarely get super slow and all widgets would appear at a low resolution (I'm using an iPhone SE 2nd gen)

Everything that needs to said about the iPhone has been said already but do y'all have moments where you just pause and admire your iPhone and everything it entails? It happens to me every now and then. Moments where I simply pause and ogle my iPhone 11 briefly before returning to whatever the hell I was doing.

Anyone using alternative keyboards? I've been wanting to use something different and was wondering what's a good alternative (no Gboard plz)

Historically, didn’t new major iOS releases only come out at the same time as the new iPhone?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:48 AM PDT

For example, when iOS 13 was downloadable to everyone, it was when the iPhone 11 came out. This is the first year I can remember where iOS 14 was released and no new iPhone officially announced. Is that a first? I would think that takes away from the iPhone 12 keynote because we all have majority of the cool new feature on our current iPhones that they usually hype during the keynote along with the one or two new unique changes to the iPhone.

Questions for Recent Android -> iOS Switchers

    Posted: 25 Sep 2020 11:20 AM PDT

    Hi all.

I've been an Android guy for quite a while, but I've switched back and forth between the two a bit, having gone in this decade

    Samsung Galaxy Nexus - > Galaxy S3 -> iPhone 5S -> OnePlus One -> iPhone 6S -> Pixel 2 XL -> Note 10+.

I'm underwhelmed with the Note 10+ despite having paid, you know, a ton of money for it. The camera is significantly worse than that of my Pixel 2XL, especially in low light, and it feels like it bloats/slows down/crashes quite a bit more than a premium device should. I'm also tired of feeling like Google's Beta Tester - Google seems to treat their major services, which millions of people depend on, with the same amount of care as I treat my casual hobbies. Core functionality of major apps - photos, maps, etc - just constantly breaks. There are issues with Google Photos, for example, EXIF data getting irreparably corrupted, that have been reported since 2016 on the support forums with no known fixes. Or, there was a fix, but then Google patched out the fix!

I guess I just want to see if I'm alone here. Did you find that your devices slowed down and degraded after a while, even premium ones, and did you find that things constantly just didn't work the way you wanted them to? If so, have things been mitigated by switching to iOS? I am strongly considering selling the Note 10+ and buying an iPhone 12 when they come out. Just looking for insight, especially now that iOS 14 is out.

    Thanks!

EDIT: I put this in the comments below too, but as I've gotten older I've gotten to be less of a tinkerer so I don't really mess around with sideloading apps, rooting/ROMing, that sort of thing, the way I used to. Despite the stories I told myself when I bought it, the Note 10+ is hugely overkill for how I actually use devices, I'm learning (though I do love the S Pen because I like to draw on pictures, take notes, and use it as a remote for my camera). At the end of the day I basically want a the best possible camera in all conditions with a built in music player, a big, bright screen, and reliable software.
