Is it just me, or is iCloud Drive useless? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:45 PM PDT I don't know if this is just me or not. I recently purchased a MacBook Air, 256gb. It's good. It's decent. It's a change from Windows which I've used all my life, but I'm getting the hang of it. But for iCloud Drive to either sync everything or nothing at all is an utter oversight. I have about 400gb in iCloud Drive, and I would LOVE if it just stayed there and didn't try to guess what I want synced to it. I'm using it as cloud storage, not as an extended part of my MacBook. Is there really no way to keep access to iCloud Drive while not letting it sync everything to my MacBook locally? OneDrive can do this. Google Drive File Stream can do this. But not iCloud Drive. I just got off of the phone with AppleCare and the lovely chap I spoke to is baffled by it too. I can either go System Preferences > Apple ID > *untick iCloud Drive* and not have it sync, or leave it on and have it download every file and it's damn dog. Please, Apple, if there is a way to only let it upload and NOT download offline versions of files within it, make it easy to see! [link] [comments]
Macbook Air 2020 i3 or i5 (also some other questions lol) Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:51 PM PDT I'll be starting uni in a few weeks and I'm looking for a new laptop. I've used Windows my whole life and I'm looking for a change to be honest. I have had an Ipad and an Apple pencil for around 2 years now and I love them! My budget is definitely less than a £1000. With a student discount, I can either get MBA 2020 i3 (base model) for £900 or the same laptop but i5 for £1000. I'm doing medicine, so most of my work will probably include powerpoints, Excel, and a lot of general browsing. I will obviously also be using sites like Youtube and Netflix occasionally. Just really basic tasks with little to no editing or coding of any kind. With this in mind, which model should I get? I should say I want to be able to use this laptop for at least 5 years, so longetivity is important. I've heard about a lot of thermal issues with the i5 model so that is a bit scary. I kind of want the best deal I can get as I will be switching to a whole new operating system and I want to make that process smooth. At first I was a bit confused between Dell XPS and MBA 2020, but it turns out heating is worse with Dell so that's not ideal. If that weren't a factor, would you say Dell XPS would be a better choice than MBA given my use? The reason I want a Macbook is that even the really good Windows PCs are touching the 1k mark so I don't see the point of not just getting a Macbook when I find them more visually appealing. I was also having a look at refurbished Macs and the 2019 13inch Pro model was priced really well but I've heard its keyboard is a nightmare, should I completely rule that out (keep in mind this is my first Macbook so I don't have anything to compare it to)? So to summarise: 1) MBA 2020 i3 (base model) or i5 with a difference of £100? 2) If MBA is not worth it (given my usage?), should I go with Dell XPS or any other PC? 3) Are refurbished Macs good, if yes should I just get a 2019 13 inch MBP (£979)? What about the keyboard? Extra question I just thought of: 4) Is it worth it switching over from Windows to IOS? I'm sorry for this messy post. I'm buying a laptop for the first time and I did not realise it would cause me this much anxiety 😩. I know I'm overthinking it, but it is a ~5 year commitment and I don't wanna make my life hell with a sluggish laptop. Thanks for the help in advance! Edit: it seems the refurbished MBP is out of stock already. [link] [comments]
MacBook 2017 (thin M3) or MacBook Pro 2020 or wait, until, whenever. Posted: 05 Sep 2020 11:33 PM PDT I've had the really thin MacBook model for years now and they don't make them like this anymore but I'm debating whether or not to go for the MacBook Pro for grad school. I have multiple chrome tabs open for research, like to connect to a monitor and want to be able to browse the internet and multitask while on Zoom call/classes with graphics-heavy internet things for research. I also want to prevent overheating. I'm receiving tons of conflicting advice so please help!! And which version of the MacBook Pro - is the baseline 13" enough? [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 11:06 PM PDT Hey everyone! I've gotten a ton of mileage out of my Macbook--its a 13" Aluminum late 2008 w/ 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3 memory and 160GB storage. Looks like I have about 90GB free in my storage still since I keep all music and photos on an external hard drive. However, its slowing down so much these days, I don't know if there's anything else I can do. Any tips? Or is it just finally dying and I need to buy a new one? Thanks! [link] [comments]
Does anyone else’s MacBook USB-C feel loose? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:40 PM PDT I got a 2020 MacBook Air about a week ago and I noticed that while charging, the USB-C charger feels a bit loose and wobbly while plugged in. The plug clocks firms in place and feels secure but it feels like the internal housing inside the computer is loose or detached, in a way that lightning never does. Is this normal? Strange Download warning on new (to me) MBP 2013 Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:49 PM PDT Howdy, I got around to getting a different MBP 15 in late 2013, running Catalina. Trying to set everything up similar to the way I had my 2011 MBP set up. I came to find out that when I tried to download Adobe Acrobat, I got an error message in Safari "Safari could not download the file because there is not enough disc space". When I checked the download folder in Finder, I find it has 2GB allocated to it. A quick google search found me a workaround to have safari downloads go to a larger folder. I am wondering if there is a way to change the Downloads folder to have a larger file size? This seems unusual to me. TIA> [link] [comments]
Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:12 PM PDT Recently I sent my 2015 MacBook Pro in to be looked at. The display was black but I could use and external display with it. After finding out it will cost around 900 to replace the screen I decided to go another route and am wondering if it'll be worth it. I'm curious if I should buy an iPad Pro as a display for when I'm not connected to a monitor. The iPad Pro is similar in price to getting the screen fixed and I'd have a iPad. Any thoughts or problems I may not be seeing? [link] [comments]
Macbook air 2015 vs MBP 2020 Webcam? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 06:34 PM PDT I recently got a MBP and have noticed that my webcam camera is worst then my old macbook air 2015, is this normal? or something is wrong with my camera?? the difference is pretty visible. 5 years difference between my two laptops i would have expected to at least keep the same resolution. Animation Stuttering issues on MacBook Pro 15in 2019 Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:09 PM PDT Is anyone else experiencing stuttering in the animations like switching desktops, Mission Control, bouncing icons in the dock, and just generally browsing the web. I started noticing this a week or two ago. I ended up restarting off the mbp, but this issue persisted. The issue resolves itself when I disable "Automatic Graphics Switching," but that is not great for battery life when I am on the go. Anyone else experiencing this? I really thought the i9 were great, but I'm kind of shocked at how crapy this experience has become. Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:29 PM PDT Hi everyone! I recently bought a MacBook Pro at Best Buy, and recently saw online that you get a free set a AirPods when you purchase a MacBook. Even though I didn't buy the laptop directly from I was wondering if it was possible to redeem it? I'm also a college student, if that means anything. Thank you! [link] [comments]

54 GB of 'Other' in my Storage Posted: 05 Sep 2020 06:26 AM PDT Hi everyone, I have the Mac 13" 2013 model. I am running out of space despite deleting tons and tons of my files. Last night, I made 5GB of space by deleting old files. Today I have 105 MB of space remaining on my hard drive despite the fact I have not downloaded anything since then. I have 54 GB listed as 'Other'. Could you please help me figure out why this is happening and if there is a way to get around it without having to reset my computer? I have lots of image files in Photos that i can only see the thumbnail for for some reason but if I wipe my computer i will lose access to this. [link] [comments]

My order for the new MBP is still being processed after 19 days. Is that normal? Should I be worried? [link] [comments]
Non charging MacBook Pro touchbar- almost brand new so quite unexpected. Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:41 AM PDT Was given a brand new MacBook by my employer just before lockdown and used it for a couple of days without any trouble. When lockdown started, the work I use of for stopped and I put it away. I got it out yesterday and it doesn't seem to be able to charge. I imagine the issue is something to do with the battery being run completely flat I've tried some basic trouble shooting... The usb c charger seems to be working (it can charge my phone), the screen/backlight aren't broken as it shows the empty battery and lightening bolt icon. I've also tried resetting the SMC and have left it charging for about 24 hours. It still won't start up. Any thoughts? [link] [comments]
MacBook circa 2008 worth upgrading? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 07:31 AM PDT While I'm new to the MacBook. I do have knowledge of Apple products as I owned iPhones and iPods before. However I have recently obtained a free MacBook through a friend whose father died. He received the computer through his company, put his information in and set up his password, didn't like it, and threw it in his office closet. This thing is literally brand new, it has very few hours on it. I went ahead and updated all the software on it, latest iOS version etc. What I was wondering is it worth upgrading anything else? the ram? Hard drive? And is it worth trying to use GarageBand or any other recording software? This obviously wouldn't be my everyday computer, but just something to record guitar ideas down on. If of course it's worth upgrading? [link] [comments]
