Explain to me like I'm 5--how do I backup my MacBook Air? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 03:05 PM PDT I have a MacBook Air early 2015 model. It's been shutting down unexpectedly and I think it needs a new battery. I made an appointment to get it checked out. I know I need to backup my computer before taking it in (and should have done it long ago), but I don't know where to start. I've looked online and I can't quite understand what I need to do. I do have Time Machine turned on, but now I see it needs to be backed up to an external hard drive which I don't have. I looked into cloud backup options but every company seems to have both great and terrible reviews. I'm not sure I could understand how to work it, anyway. All the reviews make it sound complicated (to me). Basically, what's the simplest way to backup my computer before bringing it in for service? [link] [comments] |
Find my friends work while phone is switched off? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:32 PM PDT Hello! Weird thing happened today - so my partner and I keep our location on for each other at all times for safety purposes. I went to ring him earlier today but it immediately went to "the phone is switched off." So that was that. Except I could see his location on Find my friends and although his location stayed the same at home, it would still go through the loading screen and say "Now" as if it was updating in real time? Really confused over this - we both thought that a switched off phone would not be able to share location. I'm using an iPhone 7, and he uses an iPhone SE. I'm on iOS 13.7, not sure about his though. Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:53 PM PDT Hey guys, I was trying to move one of my apps from one page to another and accidentally flicked downwards towards the bottom of the phone. Then the app disappeared and I can't find it. So I tried to search my phone for it and it's saying it's in my settings. When I click on that settings link, nothing shows up. How do I find this app? It's no longer available in the App Store so is it lost forever? Why is it showing up in my settings folder? The app was Allen Carr quit smoking. Once I lost it, I searched my phone for 'stop smoking' and it shows my settings app with Allen Carr written next to it. When I click that it just leads me to my settings app with no further info. What do I do and my phone is safe with this random app in my settings now? Sorry for the confusing explanation. [link] [comments] |

Why doesn’t it let me send messages to certain people on an iPad? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:40 PM PDT The message is green instead of blue and when I try to send a message to these numbers, it loads for a long time but doesn't send [link] [comments] |
Does the A1466 Airport card house both the Bluetooth and WiFi hardware (early 2014 MacBook Air) Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:26 PM PDT My MBA shows my Wifi hardware is not detected, but the Bluetooth and camera are working fine. If both the Bluetooth and WiFi hardware are stored in the A1466 Airport card? If so, I would think the issue would be related to the hardware (Airport card) itself, instead of the wiring or antennas that attach the wires to the card. Thoughts? [link] [comments] |
Part of iPhone X screen not responding Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:13 PM PDT Started having some issues with my iPhone X today. The extreme right side of my screen from top to bottom doesn't respond to touch. Basically, it's an area as wide as the p key on the keyboard and goes all the way up. So when I hold the phone in portrait mold I can't type the letter P or 0. I have to turn the phone sideways to get it to enter those characters. Also if I hit the right side of the backspace key it won't register. I didn't drop my phone or anything so no clue what's causing it. I've tried doing a factory reset but that didn't work. I spilled water on my macbook pro! Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:20 PM PDT It wasn't much at all maybe a few centimeters of a glass i lifted it off immediately so most of the water went on the floor but a good amount went on my keyboard. I took and towel and dried of all the water resting on the keyboard. It looks completely dry from the outside now and seems to work fine. Is there anything else I should do? I read I can flip it upside down (open lid) and let it dry out some more but it seems fine to me already. Let me know if I'm really risking anything here if I keep using it. Thanks! How much life can I get from the screen and speakers of a c.2010 iMac Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:10 PM PDT I am still using a "Mid 2011" 21.5 inch iMac with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 with 4 GB 1333MHz DDR3. It has been my ever-present companion and it is in fine "shape" except that it is long past being updatable and it is very very slow these days. I've known I need to update. I don't need crazy amounts of power or storage -- a low-end Mac desktop would be fine for me. I'm considering the idea of getting a Mac Mini, but the cost savings would only work if I can use my current iMac basically just as a screen and speakers. Is the hardware of those dimensions reliable enough to count on at this stage in its life? If not, is the cost requirements for a screen and speakers for the Mac Mini such that it would be better to just get a new 21.5" iMac? Just trying to be a good user of my electronic resources. Thanks ahead of time! [link] [comments] |
Why are other people’s audio so terrible while using AirPods? Posted: 07 Sep 2020 08:10 PM PDT I use AirPods a lot. But one thing I notice is that other people's audio sounds a lot worse when I'm in a discord or zoom call compared to my headset. I tried to look for a solution but the closest thing I came to find was to turn of the microphone and I still don't know how to do it. If anyone could give me a solution to both of these problems it would really help me out. [link] [comments] |

I'm still getting mail but theirs no notification I have mail waiting until after I check by actually opening the app at that point it'll load. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:52 PM PDT I've got a 2015 21.5" retina iMac that will completely freeze often. Today if froze 5 times. It needs to be powered down and rebooted. If it's playing video at the time of the freeze, you'll get the last sound played on a 0.5 second loop. It seems that it always happens when VTDecoderXPCService is running in the background and taking large amounts of CPU. Additionally, I have my security software running on this Mac as well, SecuritySpy. The logs never show anything of value. I'm trying to eliminate a CPU heat issue. After my last reboot, I ran `power metrics` and dump the contents to a text file. I'm curious if anyone else who has a similar Mac can verify if my temps are normal. During the last VTDecoderXPCService run, which didn't freeze it up, this was the temp looks like a normal temp for me is this It seems like the issue pops up when I've taken lots of videos with my iPhone and it's syncing them in the background. Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:41 PM PDT I have a 16" MacBook Pro connected to a 27" 5k LG Ultrafine supplying up to 87W. After a few hours of playing a video game, I noticed that the battery level of my computer was decreasing (I assumed due to the 9W difference in power between the monitor and the provided power 96W adapter). However, coconut battery shows that my battery health has dropped from 95% two days ago, to just 79% today. The status is listed as "good". Is this the result of the Battery Health Management feature in action, limiting the maximum charge of the battery, or did I somehow destroy the battery by discharging it under heavy load? I've disabled battery health management and restarted the computer yet the "full charge capacity" and "health" in Coconutbattery have not changed. screenshot of coconut battery: https://imgur.com/a/VjY6FJ4 [link] [comments] |
Macbook pro (mid 2015) random freezing/shutdown Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:39 PM PDT Hey guys, I have a mid 2015 MBP retina 15" and a couple of months ago it started randomly shutting down/freezing (mouse showing the circle of death) and sometimes won't connect to the wifi (wifi logo in the menu bar shows a blank logo). I've tried resetting the SMC but no luck. I suspect this might have something to do with my battery, as I'm currently at 1108 cycle charge and it has the "service recommended" warning. Just wondering if anyone has a similar experience and if replacing my battery could solve this issue? It's $360 CAD to replace it where I live and I want to make sure I've tried all other options before dipping into wallet. Thanks for all the help! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:53 PM PDT So I got a refurb base model 2019 MBP 16" at the beginning of August having moved on from a refurb 2014 rMBP. I loved my old MBP and even to this day it's super snappy. The only reason I got a new one was because I'm trying to get my wife into the ecosystem as well (and just generally couldn't resist some new hardware). I didn't test this MBP much before setting up the two users (hers and mine -- mainly for Chrome profiles, etc) and unfortunately I didn't play around with it much during the return period. What I've noticed is that it's quite laggy with general use. I've got BTT installed and upon waking up from sleep, things freeze for split seconds, little laggy moments here and there. I've noticed that on my rMBP this isn't even the case. Honestly I should have looked into it further and earlier but what broke the camel's back for me is that I was watching some AppleTV with the native app and while fullscreened, the video kept bugging out either with randomly freezing frames or the picture staying frozen indefinitely and requiring a restart. When I look in the activity monitor, nothing really stands out, but I do notice that my wife's username has processes attributed to it and IIRC she hadn't even logged in since boot. Since my old rMBP didn't have multiple users I'm not sure if this issue of sluggishness is attributed to that, or if there's another issue other than this being the baseline performance on the base 2019 16" MBP? My iPod screeches with most of my music Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:23 PM PDT I got a 5 gen iPod and every time I play any song from great comet, dear Evan Hansen or Amelie makes a screeching noise in some notes, how can I fix this? Or is there any optimal equalization? [link] [comments] |
