Can’t seem to reclaim Purgeable space? Disk utility mis reporting

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:57 PM PDT

My Mac has a 256gb SSD, with now 90gb of purgable data and 100gb of free space.

However I'm trying to partition the drive off like I have in the past, but Disk Utility is showing only 17gb free.

Get Info on my drive shows 100+90gb of purgable.

How can I get Disk Utility to show the correct space and take back that massive chunk of purgable data?

    Thank you

A PSA to everyone to check that their Mac’s internal drive is formatted correctly!

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 05:28 AM PDT

So, I have a 2017 MacBook Pro and long story short it was wiped and the OS had to be reinstalled. When I got my Mac, it had Sierra on it - so the drive was HSF+. Since then I'd upgraded to the newest OS every year.

Before it was wiped, the computer was feeling pretty sluggish. I'd run the BlackMagic disk Speedtest and the speeds were pretty slow, less than 500 for both... And yes I had tried a lot to speed it up and made sure I had enough free space etc...

At this time I assumed that it was formatted for APFS since I assumed that it did that when updating to High Sierra. Turns out it didn't... I know this now since I used Disk Utility quite a bit and the APFS file system looks very different to HFS+ in Disk Utility (with its containers and all).

When I reinstalled everything and put all my info back, it felt so much smoother and quicker! Then I did the disk speedtest again and suddenly it's way over 1500 (Like it was on day one).

So I just want to let anyone know that it does not reformat itself and apparently, after Googling, I've learnt you had to tell it to reformat? Anyway, just a friendly reminder from my experience!

Problem with MacBook Pro and macOS Catalina

    Posted: 09 Aug 2020 01:50 AM PDT

So I have a Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" and I installed macOS Catalina on it with a Patcher and after a while of using it, it no longer booted correctly (it used to have some issues with the ram but after that I decided to change it) so I decide to install a fresh copy of macOS El capitan so whenever I try to install it it starts to boot the patch, and I decide to erase everything from the HDD with an external enclosure and another MacBook Pro but even after that, some part of the patch still runs, how can I erase it?

    heavy battery health drop

Recently got 2020 base MBP 13". After only 31 cycle counts design capacity went down all the way to the 92.7%. Is this software or hardware fault? Or am I doing something wrong?

    4K YouTube on Safari

    4K YouTube on Safari

I am incredibly sorry if I am just super late to this, but as of MacOS Big Sur 11.0 and Safari 14.0, we now officially have support for 4k YouTube on Safari! I always used Chrome instead for this so this is super awesome.

    Mac OS Catalina

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:50 PM PDT

Why do I have to grant access for every little thing now? Photoshop wants to use the colour picker - grant permission, want to save a file - grant disk access, want to install a program - approve the developer. Do you want to use the computer - are you sure? Are you sure you're sure? Using the computer could be dangerous. Are you sure?

I have to enter my password about 15 times every time I turn on my computer. I think I spend a good 10% of the time I use my computer in system preferences approving shit for use or bypassing ridiculous restrictions in terminal. Lucky I managed to change the minimum password requirement of 4 characters or I probably would have given up long ago.

    Other problems

    • 32 bit software is totally out the window, so good luck getting any even slightly older games to run.
    • Safari can only use extensions from the app store
    • Gradual dumbing down of software (for example disk utility and bootcamp)
    • the total castration of iTunes and iOS device connectivity/app file transfer

MacOS has become a curator's dream but a user's nightmare. I remember when OSX was a haven for mac app and game developers and tinkerers alike but now it's just shite.

Should I upgrade my iMac 27" 2011 from Sierra to High Sierra?

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 11:25 PM PDT

High Sierra is the last OS officially supported. It's pretty happy on Sierra right now so are there any benefits to going up to High Sierra?

New to MacOS and have a question

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 08:56 PM PDT

    Hey all,

It took me about 15 years of my life to finally switch to the mac, and so far I have no regrets!

Just a quick question for you guys, I'm using my macbook pro screen as one display, and another monitor as my 2nd display. Whenever I'm using apps like Photoshop and Premiere, photoshop is opened on my Macbook display (which is what I want) however, whenever I open layers or anything from the window toolbar, they are hovering in my second window. I'd like everything to just be opened on my Macbook screen so that I can use the second monitor for other work.

    Cheers!

MacOS Big Sur Restore Error -1008F

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 08:29 PM PDT

I recently had to erase the Apple SSD disk after having a software issue on my Mac where I couldn't get past the Lock Screen due to the white loading bar getting a quarter way through and then the MacBook would restart. I first tried upgrading MacOS to the latest version compatible by using Option-Command-R, which didn't end up working. Then I tried reinstalling the MacOS software version that came with the MacBook, by doing Shift-Option-Command-R, which also didn't work. Then I went into recovery mode, erased Macintosh HD and tried reinstalling MacOS from the recovery mode utilities window. This also did not work, having the MacBook screen shut off some point in the process and not being able to turn on. Now that's how I got here to deleting the Apple SSD media disk, and after doing that, I restarted the MacBook, then it asked me for a WiFi connection, and brought me to a white bar screen. And when the bar completed, I was greeted to a black screen with the error Apple.com/support -1008F.

    Help with Time Machine

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 07:09 PM PDT

So I installed the Big Sur public beta and just didn't like it so I decided to downgrade back to Catalina. I made a new Time Machine backup and successfully downgraded to Catalina, but now for some reason it doesn't recognize the files on the Time Machine backup. It recognizes the drive as a Time Machine backup, tells me that it contains several gigabytes worth of files, but it doesn't seem to be able to restore them or even show them. It isn't recognized in Migration Assistant, and when I tried to restore in Recovery, it gets recognized as a Time Machine backup, but it tells me that "No MacOS system backups were found" when I try to restore it. Any help is appreciated.

Wifi not working for specific wifi connection

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 06:00 PM PDT

Sorry for the block of text ahead!

For a bit of context, I have a Macbook 12 inch 2017 base model and had no connection problems (or any) until now. I also have Norton (I know, please don't kill me in the comments) installed for the past 3 months.

My usual wifi connection (the one I've been using ever since getting the laptop) has not been connecting to my Macbook as of a several hours ago. This happened soon after supposedly clicking "deny" (even though I swear I clicked "accept"?) when Norton asked whether to accept or deny the connection for rapportd. After that, only that specific wifi connection does not work. The router has no problem (it connects to every other device in my household) and my computer has no problem (I'm able to connect to the internet with my hotspot no problem). The wifi connection still shows up but apparently it is using a Mac-designated IP address since it cannot connect to the router.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling Norton, forgetting the specific wifi connection, trying to make a new location in system preferences, resetting the data, etc (basically looking throughout Reddit and the internet to no avail, all the advice wasn't helpful). I am worried that this will continue and I desperately need this computer and this connection for online classes (as I am a student taking mostly online classes remotely and my hotspot is limited).

Thank you so much in advance!

Help needed with a Macbook Air with suddenly slow SSD and not charging

    Posted: 08 Aug 2020 04:31 PM PDT

I have a Macbook Air 2013 wich has been working perfectly until yesterday. Today I turned it on, and startup chime sounded for the half second I pressed the power button, without completely turning on the computer. I had to keep it pressed for a while for it to finally start, and the starting process took around two minutes, when normally it takes 20 seconds.

Also, the Magsafe cable doesn't charge the laptop at all and the orange charging light doesn't come on.

Thanks in advance for any suggestion.
