My take on some Big Sur Icons (C4D + Arnold)

I thought I'd try to modify the previous FCPX logo to slightly better suit the Big Sur app icon style. What do you think??

Big Sur/Mavericks Finder concept. Found some of the visual changes in Big Sur interesting and decided to put a classic spin on it. It's strangely refreshing.

Something interesting about the feature of Apple Silicon Macs to run iOS apps

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 12:55 AM PDT

There are many media apps that have been highly requested such as Netflix that seem like the would never show up on the Mac App Store. However, with this new feature, apps like Disney+, Hulu, and Netflix are actually usable on your computer natively, giving the ability to download content if traveling offline.

I just thought I would share something that I thought was exciting about future Macs. It made no sense that you could bring a laptop on a plane but couldn't download any content from your streaming services.

Did Apple just put Big Sur's release date as an easter egg in Numbers?

Did Apple just put Big Sur's release date as an easter egg in Numbers?

    https://preview.redd.it/ssuefz8993851.png?width=1884&format=png&auto=webp&s=d763406df07753409d54d67cebc691f4cb68af4a

I just opened up Numbers to create a spreadsheet and the "Travel Planner" template looked nice in the thumbnail so I chose that. Next thing I know I see Big Sur being mentioned for 25 October 2020 at 10:00 AM, could it be the real release date?

It all checks out: 25 October is fall/autumn, Apple has stated "fall 2020" as release date, 10:00 AM is the exact time that Apple always releases big OS updates, and of course Big Sur is the next macOS update.

The fact they chose a Sunday might be to throw us off, so the actual date might become 26 October.

Also, while the end of October is quite a late release date for macOS (most have been released between late September and early October) but Yosemite was released 16 October and Mavericks 22 October. The fact that this isn't a 10.x update but a 11.0 update, and that it most likely will be costing Apple all the resources they have to implement their own ARM architecture and Rosetta 2 and so on, means that it wouldn't be weird at all. Heck, you can even attribute COVID-19 to the (possible) later release date.

I wonder how close to reality this is. Has Apple ever made such an easter egg before?

    Safari, Reddit and memory

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 04:22 AM PDT

Why can my 5 year old 6S with 2gb of RAM scroll through hundreds of pages (with full media preview including autoplaying videos) on Apollo without issue, but my MacBook Pro 2018 with 16gb of ram is constantly slowing down and telling me Reddit is using too much memory? Obviously new reddit is badly optimised but how can it be this bad?

    monitor Control

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 02:20 AM PDT

I just downloaded monitor control from github to change the brightness and audio of my external display. I was hesitant to use it cause I dont like to add 3rd party softwares normally on my mac as over time it starts taking a toll on the system. And also, I thought the software was a hack, a work around of changing the brightness because I thought there was a hardware limitation to communicate between the laptop and the screen.

But this software works flawlessly, I can change the brightness and see it change in the monitor settings as well. Mind blown, right? So it begs the question, why does MacOS limit you for these things? Surely these are considered crucial for anyone using an external monitor. I read someone saying on quora that MacOS doesnt allow you to control other devices :/. If thts true, then why... why.... ?? Is this also true for windows and other operating systems?

    Time to unsubscribe from /r/MacOS

    Posted: 01 Jul 2020 01:00 AM PDT

The mods of this sub don't allow posts from sites that they haven't whitelisted, thereby artificially limiting what news and information gets posted here. This restriction, imo, is bad for macOS users and readers of this sub. So it's time for me to unsubscribe, and I'd strongly suggest others do the same since the information to be found here is limited at best and there's a significantly increased chance of it being biased as well.

Why now? I tried to post a link to an article about an exploit that could be used to bypass security, but apparently since it wasn't from one of their whitelisted (read "promoted") websites they don't think you, the end-user, needs this info; apparently an exploit that could possibly compromise your machine isn't worth our time to read about.

    Be safe and take care.

I just realized that all windows don't have the same color shade, it is just so transparent that it on most sites appers white. They have Clearly just copied Safaris lintel transparency from iOS and implanted it into macOS, without thinking about that you on a computer mostly are working in windows

Update to software as its own application

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:47 PM PDT

I have some software that is running as a beta and I want to install an earlier version of the software (cause it's more stable), but macOS sees it as an update and writes over the beta software. Is there any way to trick macOS into thinking the beta software isn't the same software I'm trying to install? Or this a developer thing, not a macOS thing?

    Ever had this invisibility bug?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:01 AM PDT

If iPadOS can read/write a hard drive without mounting it, MacOS 11 may mark the end of mounting/unmounting hard drives.

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 02:19 PM PDT

Because iPadOS doesn't do any active writing or data modification in Files (besides a file transfer), and doesn't have any delayed disk writes, there's no risk of data corruption when a hard drive is unplugged.

iPadOS doesn't even have traditional mounting and unmounting of drives. Apple's official instruction to remove an external hard drive is to "simply remove it".

With MacOS 11 being a rebuilt platform (and more similar to iOS and iPadOS), there may no longer be a need to mount and unmount hard drives!

Tool to sort through every file on Mac?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 01:59 PM PDT

Hello, I'm switching to a new computer and want to sort though my files to back up some of them. Basically, I'm looking for a Mac feature or app that I can use to sort through every user-generated file. I want all of my files in a list with an option to save or delete each one, without having to sort through folders and hidden files and non user-generated files.

    Does this exist?

    Thanks
