I really can't afford a new appleTV right now, and I'm using it more often since my bedroom doesn't have cable.

Function101 Offering Alternative Apple TV Remote Control for $30

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:07 AM PDT

YouTube app lost ability to FFW/RWD or pull up info on video playing.

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:03 AM PDT

4K AppleTV and a week or two ago I lost the ability to down arrow to bring up a video's info while playing it (title, date published, etc.). It doesn't happen on all videos but it happens a lot.

In affected videos, I also lose the ability to fast forward or rewind through the timeline.

Moving up into main screen to select suggested videos after the one I was watching has ended, this also not possible in the affected videos.

    Anyone else?

Which setting causes that when I close my ipad app, appletv app freezes?

    Posted: 22 Jul 2020 04:06 AM PDT

From the same app to my Chromecast Ultra, I can close the IPad app, and the stream continues. The iPad is on the same router by 5g, the AppleTV is wired to the router.

Is Apple so much inferior in moving and releasing the stream to the AppleTV app?

Now that I'm here, this Apple TV4k is the worst tech buy in the last few years! - This streaming issue - The good-looking but poorly overly responsive remote - The indefinite highlights when navigating - Loosing bluetooth connection to airpods - Complaining only one bluetooth connection can exist, instead of releasing current, connecting pending device

    It's a bummer.

    Apple TV Salt Remote Review

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:15 AM PDT

I bought a Salt Remote for my parents to use with their Apple TV. The Siri remote was too sensitive and confusing for them. Salt claims their remote was designed with input from Apple so I thought it would work better than any other IR remote but that's not the case. Posting this now as it seems like there is a US version (Function101) now available.

    Pros:

    • All of the buttons are nicely labeled and make sense for Apple TV functionality. I like that there are dedicated buttons for skip forward/back 10 seconds as I use that a lot, and most universal remotes do not have those buttons. It looks like the Function101 version changed these to the much less useful chapter forward/back.

    Cons:

    • Salt remote is IR, I saw some people think it was bluetooth but that's definitely not the case.
    • There's no way to open control center, since the Apple TV does not allow IR remotes to program a home button.
    • Volume controls are not sent to the AppleTV, so they will not work over hdmi-cec, they need to be programmed to control your audio device directly.
    • Volume and power button can be programmed to only a single device. You cannot have the power button control your TV and volume control your sound bar.
    • Programming the tv/volume requires pressing a button over and over until it finds the right code. No way to enter a code manually. I gave up after 10 minutes of pressing trying to program it to control their Sony sound bar.
    • The channel rocker does nothing. Maybe it works in Salt's apps, but it did not change channels in the YouTube TV app.

After messing with it for an hour I gave up and drove to Best Buy to buy the One For All Streamer Remote. I was able to program it to control TV, sound bar, and Apple TV with no problem. I programmed the round arrow and the * button to jump forward/back 10s. Annoying that they're not labeled correctly, and still no way to open control center, but after setting it up it works much better than the Salt remote.

Question: What happened to “Recently Uploaded” in the Youtube app?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 02:04 PM PDT

There used to be a "recently uploaded" category on the YouTube Home screen (along with Recommended and other categories that change based on YouTube suggestions). It disappeared about 3 days ago...any ideas why? How to get it back?

    ARC vs AirPlay

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 03:14 PM PDT

I have a question about my setup and if there is any advantage of HDMI ARC vs AirPlay.

Current setup: AppleTV —> TV —> Sonos beam over HDMI ARC

I was wondering if there is any disadvantage to just AirPlaying the audio direct to the Sonos beam and skip the tv.

The reason I want to do this is currently, through HDMI ARC, the tv puts this big ugly volume graphic on the screen and the volume #s don't match the output and skip numbers. Volume goes 0-4-8-12 for some reason.

    Any disadvantages?

Is there any physical difference between the 4th Generation and 5th Generation 4k?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:58 AM PDT

    Hey guys,

Is there any physical difference in the Actual Apple TV 4th Generation and 5th Generation 4K? I'm going to pick up a 2nd hand model but the person using it isn't sure if it's 4th/5th Generation and they don't have a 4K TV so I won't know until I'm back home to check if it's actually 4K. So was hoping if there is any difference in the Design itself?

Dead but slightly different horse: Prime Video UHD (+ HDR) not working

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 12:40 PM PDT

Edit 2: I don't have enough data points but so far I've got 2 west coasters reporting it's fine, and 2 east coasters reporting it's not, so I'm going to assume it's a CDN issue.

So, it's a known issue around here that HDR doesn't work with Prime Video on ATVs, but after enabling the Playback HUD via developer mode on the ATV, I noticed that not only does HDR not work for content reported as such, but 4K "UHD" content is also coming through as 1080p (and then getting upscaled to 4K).

Can anyone else with developer mode turned on confirm this? I've tested Midsommar UHD, The Boys UHD, and Hanna UHD.

Contrast that with Disney+ and Netflix, which all come in as advertised (4K, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, whatever is applicable).

Actually just searched a bit more, haven't seen it reported here, but seems like folks with certain LG sets or the NVIDIA Shield have run into similar issues. I guess that's somewhat of a confirmation so I guess this is now more of a PSA.

    Edit:

Out of curiosity, I tested on some more devices / apps.

Here's some screenshots of what I'm talking about. https://imgur.com/a/eKzB5Er

Video format / audio format is what the content is encoded in, display resolution is what your display is currently doing, and natural-size is what it's streaming in as.

So far folks seem to be focusing on the HDR part, which is already a known issue here (search for it), but I'm surprised people are overlooking the 4K part. UHD content is being advertised as UHD in the Prime app but it's actually delivering 1080P. I haven't figured out how to enable video statistics on my Roku or my Xbox, so I'm not sure what res they're streaming in as, but they looked like 4K.

Device App HDR Claimed 4K but actual resolution was...
Xbox One X Prime Video Yes ? Probably 4K
Roku Prime Video Yes ? Probably 4K
Apple TV Prime Video No 1080p
    Apple TV Netflix Yes 4K
    Apple TV Disney+ Yes 4K

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:22 AM PDT

    Hello,

I just update my Apple TV to TvOS 14 and YouTube still doesn't have option to playback at 4k but on paper it is supposed to. Do I have to wait for YouTube app to be updated then Apple TV can play at 4k? Thank you.

    Radio on Atv3

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 07:29 AM PDT

    Quick question.

Is it possible to stream a radio station on an ATV3 that is not in the default radio application? I have stream url's from the stations that I want to listen to.

Thanks in advance for your help.

HOW OFTEN ARE THE TVOS BETA UPDATES ROLLING IN?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 01:58 PM PDT

    Was this evil?

    Posted: 21 Jul 2020 09:52 AM PDT

So, several years ago I got the free AppleTV with my sign up for DirecTVNow.

This was my first and only Apple Device. I still use it.

When I tried to register my email address, I couldn't. It seems someone had already registered my email address (even though it has been mine forever, as I got it during GMail beta). I attempted to correct the issue with Apple support but they insisted they could do nothing. The account had security questions and I didn't know the answers. So, I had to use a secondary email address.

Flash forward to this weekend and I get an email saying "you have attempted to retrieve your lost password, click here." So, I did.

I am able to change the password but in order to log in and I have to answer three security questions. At the bottom was a link for something and eventually, I was able to get to the point where I could answer one OF three questions and I was able to guess one of the questions.

So, the previous owner's account is now mine. He had no payment information set up and was in his 60's so I don't know if he actually used it, but he was using my email address, so I can't imagine he ever could use it.
