I need a new laptop. Was at the Apple store today and the employee scolded me for thinking an Air is suitable for my needs. What do you think?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:52 PM PDT

The store associate said I was crazy and shouldn't get a 8GB of memory, 1.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.5GHz, with 6MB L3 cache, 512GB. This would cost me $1200. He said I should get a Pro instead which would cost me $1800 for 16GB and said the Air has fan issues.

On a laptop I browse the web, maybe listen to music on YouTube, and some Word and Excel. I also will open Photos sometimes to look at pictures. No games, no video editing. Very straight forward.

I think 512GB is good for me. My previous system I had 200GB left out of the 256GB for a 2015 MBP.

Although I like the 16 inch screen (it looks so nice) I think sometimes a 13 inch screen is sweet for me even if I'm just home most of the time. I don't use external monitors.

Was the store associate looking out for me? Should I go for an air or 13 or 16 pro? I am hoping to keep this as long as I can. I need this now so no waiting on arm.

Soon to be a first time Macbook Purchaser with Questions!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:35 PM PDT

Been using nothing but windows and desktops my entire life. Been wanting a laptop and I've messed with Mac-OS and love how clean and simple it is. I am not gaming on it. My concern is I find great deals on mid-top spec windows based laptops over Mac for less. But the OS itself is what's drawing me to it. Any concerns on if I'm just being overly paranoid?

Played with the 13 Air and Pro and 16 Pro at Apple and BestBuy today. This is such a tough decision. Help!! What’s your experience with these sizes/models?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:21 PM PDT

The 13 Pro and 16 Pro are gorgeous and I was happy to use both. I don't know what to pick and price isn't too much of an issue for me. Both feel great to type on, carry, etc. I use on a desk or maybe my lap. Won't be using external monitors.

Decisions decisions... for those who had experienced both or maybe a 13 or 15 or 16, what are your thoughts and which one did you end up loving/keeping?

Thanks!! I read all comments and appreciate your experiences and knowledge!

Why does the trackpad and keyboard feel so much better on a MacBook Air compared with a Pro?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 04:50 PM PDT

I bought a MacBook Pro two months and my sister bought a Macbook Air (both 2020 models.) the other day. My sister used my Pro while she waited for her MacBook Air to arrive and when it finally did, she commented on how much better typing on the keyboard was and how satisfying the trackpad felt. I had to confirm this for myself and when I did, I completely understand how she felt. The trackpad and keyboard feels so much more solid on the MacBook Air than it does on the MacBook Pro. I'm kinda jealous of it.

    External monitor issues

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:26 PM PDT

    Hi everyone

So I got a macbook pro recently with 16gb ram. I've been having problems with external monitors. I bought the anker direct 7 in 2 usb c hub and the usb a and lightning ports seem to work but using an hdmi cable through it doesn't work. I bought a separate uni usb c to hdmi cable and it works when plugged directly into the lightning port on the macbook, not through the hub.

While the usb c to hdmi cable works, if i make the video on the external monitor full screen, the screen turns green for some reason.

Also, when I'm closing the lid, the sound all of a sudden only comes from my macbook pro instead of through the monitor like i've been doing the entire time and when I reopen the lid, i can no longer change sound output.

I feel like these are very obvious bugs apple should've caught out which leaves me to wonder did I get a defective macbook pro? So many content creators are using external monitors for work and the fact that I can't even full screen on my other monitor is riduclous. I know for a fact that a lot of people use their macbook closed and everything through the external monitor.

My macbook has been upgraded to the latest software as well. Can anyone let me know if they have had similar issues or if this is a known issue?

Check your 2020 Macbook Battery Health! [DEFECTIVE]

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:56 PM PDT

I just wanted to warn others, in case they may have the same problem.

I got my $1800 13" Macbook Pro on May 27th, 2020. My battery began to drain extremely fast. Shortly after I got a device warning saying, "Service Recommend - Battery capacity is significantly reduced. To restore capacity check your service options".

I went to Apple Support and they asked for the following info:

    • Full Charge Capacity (mAh): [Mine was 4974]
    • Cycle Count: [Mine was 25]
    • Condition: [Mine was Service Recommended]

They labeled my battery as defective, and now I have to wait a few days for repair. If you have similar battery health, go check with support. RIP remote work and summer college courses, thanks Apple. This is entirely unacceptable from a device at this price value and being brand new.

This was my first Macbook Pro, so not very happy.

Battery problems after top case replacement

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:19 AM PDT

I just got my Macbook back today after having the top case replaced on their keyboard replacement program. Rose Gold (pink) Macbook retina 12" early 2016 model, my battery cycle count before handing it over was around 4000+, I've received it back today and the cycle count is 1023?! Plus when I click the battery percentage at the top of the screen it now displays "Service Recommended"

I know on some Macbooks they replace the battery along with the top case but this doesn't seem the case but my battery cycle has gone down massively and there were no issues with the battery before handing it over. I'm going to drain it dead and fully charge a few times before I contact apple about it but it's a pain in the arse.

Also my top case is the "new" rose gold which is more gold coloured and my Macbook is the rose gold which is pink, probably the only ones they had left after they discontinued the bright pink, but it's annoying me.

*I've searched everywhere about this issue but can only find issues about battery replacements, I have no idea if my battery has been replaced because the cycle count is 1023 not 1

Edit: I've just used coconutBattery and looks like my battery has not been replaced, I'm v confused now how I've lost 3000+ cycles on my battery and now there are issues with the battery and having a "service recommended" notification after I've received it back

    Accidentally updated OS with patcher

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 06:36 PM PDT

Sooo I used Mojave patcher on my 2011 MacBook pro a while ago and today I accidentally updated my OS without even thinking about the patcher. Not surprisingly, it's not working anymore 🤦🏻‍♀️ it gets to the boot screen, loads about 80%, then restarts again. And it just keeps doing that.

Any ideas on how I can fix this?? THANKS!

Need advice: How to reset a Macbook (2008) *without* the password

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 05:47 PM PDT

A neighbor kindly gave me an old Macbook. Previous owner passed away and no one has the password. I'd like to wipe it and set up for my kid to use. Anyone know how that could be done?

Looked up the serial # and know more about it (will add below). Cannot get past login screen. No idea what OS.

    I do know:

    MacBook "Core 2 Duo" 2.4 GHz. 2008. Model A1181

Edit to add: Command + R while rebooting isn't working.

    Thank you!

[HELP] FaceTime and Messages login error

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 01:35 PM PDT

Sooo I'm new to this Macbook stuff, and I just bought my second one second hand. (The first one was a 2011, so I couldn't install Xcode and had to upgrade after 3 days.) No one cares, but now I'm writing on my MacBook Air 2017, and I my problem is that I can't log onto FaceTime or Messages, but I can log in everywhere else. (iCloud, Apple-ID, I have my contacts etc) This wasn't a problem with my 2011 one, where I automatically got logged in and received my calls. When I try logging in now, it says (translated) "This account does not include any reachable addresses. Log in at appleid.apple.com and add one" in FaceTime, but I have 3 email addresses already (added one to check if it worked, but no). In Messages it says "There was a problem activating blah blah", but I'm certain it has to do with one another. When calling Apple support, they couldn't find anything in their system stuff, but I didn't bother waiting hours for the expert section at apple... We managed to make it work when creating a new test user account locally on the Mac, so I reinstalled Catalina, and tried again with my main user account, but as soon as I logged in to my apple-id in system preferences, it broke again. I think its weird that it worked well on the older one running High Sierra, but now it doesn't seem to activate or whatever...

Soooo I need help from the smart people of Reddit <3

2015 Macbook Pro randomly powers down..

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 07:00 AM PDT

Happens even when plugged in. Quite random, as sometimes it doesn't happen for hours or even days and then sometimes it's more common.

Anyone know what it could be or if it is even possible to fix?

Future of non-Intel Chips for Dual Booting

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 11:47 AM PDT

Looking to buy my first MacBook soon. I'm going to be doing a good bit of development on it, so the ability to dual boot Windows is a must for me.

I've seen in a few video reviews that once they move away from Intel chips, this might cause problems with the ability to run Windows. I know some of the original Microsoft Surface computers than ran ARM processors were a headache to code on.

So, with the ability to dual boot being a hard requirement, should I go in on a Pro with future proofed specs now? What's the rumor mill saying about them maybe dropping another Intel based Pro before they transition fully?

I keep getting the spinning beach ball on final cut help!!!

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 10:44 AM PDT

I literally just spent $2700 at Best Buy on a 16 inch Macbook Pro for better video editing. I had the MacBook Air and I found that it wasn't great for Final Cut Pro because of the lack of storage. Just one day into using it final cut is already buffering. What should I do? Should I return the device?

Sudden slow down on MBP16 base model

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 09:43 AM PDT

Hi, I've been experiencing this for the past couple of days, and my VMWare even thinks there's not enough memory when I'm actually having fewer tabs open on Chrome and generally not have many things open. I've tried a normal reboot and a hard reboot, and while the first couple hours were fine, it's slow again. Even using EtreCheckpro doesn't reveal much. What other procedures can I use to troubleshoot the problem? Thanks!

Edit: Tried SMC reset and it fixed the problem. Didn't cross my mind it was something to deal with power, but now it makes sense because the fan is now working much more actively and the CPU also ramps up a lot more.

Would a loud sound break MacBook Pro speakers?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 05:56 AM PDT

Since may seem like a dumb question but I am worried about it. I connected MacBook Pro 15 2017 to external display, and forgot to change sound output to display speakers. I was asking Siri to change volume to 20%, when it changed to max. Then Siri's voice played very loud on my internal speakers. Would one loud sentence damage my Mac's speakers?

is the Macbook Pro (mid-2012) or Macbook Air (2013) better?

    Posted: 29 Jul 2020 08:18 AM PDT

hey, so i'm only focused on using the laptop for school projects and zoom meetings, or watching Netflix/YouTube. which one would be better performance wise? i'm totally new to macbooks and have been using HP my whole life. though i much prefer a lightweight laptop of course, i'm also someone who thinks performance is better than that. which would you recommend for a newbie? i'm on a $400 budget and i managed to find both of them at the same price, now the hard part is deciding which is best for me.

    please help!
