2011 MacBook Pro 15” brought back from the dead!

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 09:47 AM PDT

At the end of 2011 my parents bought me a brand new 15" late 2011 MacBook Pro for my photography degree I was starting the following year. My MacBook has lasted me since then through to June of 2018 when I moved to Spain, and has literally traveled the world with me. Unfortunately, once we had arrived in Spain, the infamous GPU failure hit, and I could not even boot my Mac anymore. Having just moved, I was in no financial position to replace the logic board, and shelved the laptop in hope of one day reviving it.

Recently, there have been so many videos on YouTube of the 2011-2012 Unibody MacBook Pros being restored and upgraded, especially regarding fixing the GPU temporarily. After watching many many videos, I took the plunge and bought all the necessary pieces online - a heat gun, thermal paste, and a screwdriver kit. I also bought new screws and feet, as mine were missing, and upgraded the ram to 16GB while adding a second 500GB SSD.

After carefully unscrewing and removing the logic board and heat sink, I cleared all of the old crusted thermal paste from the chips with some 96% alcohol. I then placed the board gently on some flat, smooth tiles and switched on my heat gun. This isn't anything fancy, it cost 16€ on Amazon and heats to 350°C. I know so many people will say this is too hot, but hear me out. I held the heat gun variably between 3-5cm over the course of 5 minutes, not allowing the full heat to touch the GPU. After the 5 mins, I let the board cool, reapplied thermal paste, and put the whole thing back together.

My MacBook Pro LIVES! The scariest part was removing the logic board, but take your time and breathe. I know this is only a temporary fix, and I will be buying a new Mac in the next year, but I am so happy to still be getting usage from this machine. It runs High Sierra very snappily, I simply disable the GPU using gfxcardstatus. Pics to come (:

If anyone wants more information on the process feel free to let me know, it was my first time ever attempting something like that and it was actually quite painless!

Err.. is this normal? MBA 2020 i5. My old £250 laptop can run this game!

Does anyone have experienced their MacBook Pro suddenly dropped the CPU frequency to 1.10 GHZ and stay in that range for about 20 secs and come back to normal (2.5ghz+) ? I'm having a Late 2019 MacBook Pro 13" with 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

    Vinyl palm rest?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:59 PM PDT

Has anyone seen or heard of a vinyl palm rest?

I wear bracelets and I am super worried about scratching my MacBook. I know they make vinyl covers for the outside, I'm curious if a small sticker would effect the closure of the MacBook or not.

My 2019 MBP is receiving incoming calls from random numbers and the callers are dialing numbers not connected to me whatsoever.

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 12:03 PM PDT

Today I've received 4 calls from people who have dialed NOT MY NUMBER and have reached me through my 2019 13" MBP. When these calls came through, none of my other Apple devices rang.

This is an Apple Certifed Refurbished device that I've had since April 2020. This is the first day/instance this has happened. Running 10.15.5

I asked the last two people what number they were trying to reach and they both said different numbers, neither of which were my number - and neither were close. I went to search the numbers on my mac and it brought up this .igs file both times for both numbers from a folder linked to my iCloud Drive. AFAIK this file is unrelated as it's a supplementary file for a 3D printer.

Can anyone explain why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?

ETA: When I search the number with dashes nothing comes up, just the mathematic equation, so it's probably not related to the issue.

Does the Space Grey come off easily ?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:56 AM PDT

I was able to find some older threads but nothing recent. I was wondering if the Space Grey Macbooks paint is thick or long lasting ? Kind of scared to scratch it to show the silver underneath.

    Thanks a lot.

Fried battery, charging circuit chip, something worse?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:39 PM PDT

Hello all, greatly appreciate your input.

I spilled wine on my 2017 MacBook Air 13" two nights ago. I immediately flipped it upside down, unplugged it, it powered down, and I let it drain/dry for 24 hours. 24 hours later I was able to get an iFixit pentalobe screwdriver kit and access the insides of the computer. I used 70% isopropyl wipes (all I could find) to gently clean the entire inside, at least what I could access (I took apart whatever seemed easy to take apart and reassemble). I am not computer pro by any means but was following internet advice.

I let that dry for another 14 hours or so, then reassembled the computer. It actually powered on and is working 95% perfectly but ONLY when connected to AC power. If the cord disconnects the computer shuts down.

A few minutes ago I accidentally unplugged the AC cord (while raising the computer to my ear to listen for the fan lol) and I was unable to power it back on again, even on AC power. I did a SMC reset (whatever that is) and also flipped over the head of the AC adapter itself so that the opposite side was pointing up (the same way it was inserted when I had it running before this most recent failure). The computer powered up.

It is definitely is running a little more slowly and more choppy than pre-wine bath. But trackpad, keys, sound, WIFI all seem to be fine. I just tried to open Sims 4 and it is laggy and glitchy. Another strange thing is that my desktop background has been reset to factory image, I think even before the SMC reset.

However, I am writing this post from the computer.

When reassembling the computer I did struggle to connect the battery but I feel like I got it hooked up. I don't know how else it could connect and it matches the photos I took prior to dissembling.

I read a similar sob story and the guy's issue was resolved like this "He'd tested charging circuit of Logic Board and found damaged chip. It's chip ISL6258A which controls battery charging etc. It's partly damaged (one 'foot is fried' as he reported it) and it can be replaced without replacing whole Logic Board."

Given these symptoms, do you think my battery is effed, or perhaps I did not install it correctly, or a chip associated with battery charging is damaged, or my Mac is signaling more serious damage?

I have a Genius Bar appointment for next Wednesday and that's the earliest I could arrange :(

Thanks so much for reading and weighing in.

AirDrop declined by Macbook on iMac

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:26 PM PDT

Maybe someone has an easy fix for me...

I'm trying to airdrop a folder of about 43GB from an iMac running Sierra (version 10.12.6) to a MacBook running Mojave (version 10.14.6).

Both machines are on the same wifi network and Bluetooth is on.

From the iMac, I go to the finder and go to airdrop.

Then from the MacBook, I go to the finder and go to airdrop and force it to find older macs.

Then both machines see each other on airdrop.

But when I drag the iMac folder to the MacBook icon, I get an instant pop-up on the iMac that the MacBook "declined your request."

Wanted: bluetooth/wireless mouse for my MBP that isn't tiny and doesn't need it's own receiver

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:25 AM PDT

Been looking for a wireless mouse for my Macbook 13 for a while now and it seems most bluetooth mice are compact travel mice which is no good for me as someone with reasonably large hands. I'm just looking for a standard sized mouse, nothing clever, that doesn't require its own receiver.

    Any suggestions? Thanks!

Edit. the Apple Magic Mouse isn't one I'm considering - I find it pretty uncomfortable to use because of the low profile.

Oh, and one other issue - I'm left handed so most ergonomic mice are no good either as they never come in a left handed model!

Will the new ARM MacBooks support Ubuntu?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 02:21 AM PDT

I am a programmer and I think in future I might have to work on Linux. And I have to buy a new laptop soon. So will the new ARM MacBooks support installation of Ubuntu using Bootcamp?

I'm asking because I think Mac is based on Unix and Ubuntu on Linux so if ARM architecture allows MacOS it should allow Ubuntu too right?

And if Ubuntu isn't supported then huge section or programmers who use Macs will be extremely disappointed I wonder.

The problem with the GPU / display MacBook Air 2020

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 06:00 AM PDT

The problem with the GPU / display MacBook Air 2020

I bought a MacBook in May. Took the new Air on i5. Waited a month. And then he finally came. But I almost immediately noticed that broken pixels sometimes fall out. I thought that a software error, reset, the problem remained. I turned to the service center, where under warranty they replaced the motherboard. But the problem is back again! Today I rent again to the service. Who faced this problem, what does it come from?

I enclose a photo of the defect. When updating the screen, the defect disappears.

    Air vs Pro

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:24 PM PDT

    Hey,

So I am in the process of choosing a new setup, currently have a bit of a busted 2015 MacBook pro and am wondering if I should get a really optimized Air which will still be cheaper than a Pro by a few hundred with the same specifications, like 16 GB ram, at least 512 GB hard drive , only 1.2 GHertz with i7 processor instead of like 1.4-1.7 on the pro. Does the pro have a substantially better/faster function if dealing with heavy programs? I'm just not sure which one to go with, but I like to play games time to time, use Adobe programs, sometimes Maya for 3d rendering. Also, am going to grad school pretty soon, but I can't seem to make a decision.

    Any opinions?

Edit: also, what is ARM in the new pros. I know they are switching from Intel, will it make a drastic difference in function?

Wait for the new MBA to come out or buy one now?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 01:14 PM PDT

With the new processor Apple is coming out with, I am concerned that the current MacBooks are not future-proofed anymore. I am also wondering how the current intel processor will function with the new apps and app updates that will be prioritized for the Apple chip? Any insight will help. Thank you

USB-C to mini displayport adapter vs USB-C to displayport cable

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:27 AM PDT

Recently upgraded to a new Macbook and wondering if there are any downsides to buying a USB-C to mini displayport adapter as opposed to replacing my previous 2 video cables.

I currently own a mini displayport to displayport cable for my desk monitor and a mini displayport to HDMI when connecting to a TV. I'm only ever connected to 1 at a time, so it seems like an adapter would be the cheaper option but maybe there are disadvantages I'm unaware of. Thanks

    Macbook Air Fan Issue

Hey, I've got a Macbook Air early 2015 model. I recently installed Macs Fan Control to control fan RPM and heat. The problem is it only shows the Exhaust fan as you can see. My question is that does this model not have any other fans then the exhaust fan, is my other fan broken/undetected, appreciate all help, thanks.

    Macbook shortage?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 11:11 AM PDT

Has anyone recently attempted to purchase a MB or MBP? I'm using the education store and all of the shipping times don't have it arriving for an estimated two weeks? Seems like the stores are low too which is odd because Best Buy has them available for pickup today. Just wanted to take advantage of the special on the Airpods :/

Why does the 2019 Macbook pro get so hot ?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 10:07 AM PDT

I have a 2019 13'' 1.7 ghz macbook pro and when I use chrome with multiple tabs open it gets very warm, and when I open up Minecraft (a game that came out more than a decade ago) for 10 minutes it gets so hot that it kind of hurts when I touch the area above the keyboard.

I think a computer that costs more than a grand should have a better cooling system or better processor.

2020 MBP or Upgraded Spec 2020 MacBook Air for Grad Student?

    Posted: 08 Jul 2020 08:55 AM PDT

    Hello,

I'm entering Optometry school this Fall and I'm debating between two laptops that will be in the same cost range (~$1379-$1399)

I'm debating between the MBP (i5/8 or 16GB RAM/256 to 516 SSD) vs MacBook Air (i5/16GB RAM/516 SSD). For the MBP, I would only choose to upgrade the RAM or storage, which I haven't decided on and so I would appreciate suggestions on which one!

If the specs are relatively similar, what are the major benefits/cons of a pro vs air? The only thing I can see superficially is the TouchBar, which I don't think I'll find myself using very often.

My day to day uses would be Microsoft, Zoom, Note taking, lectures, various optometry/pre-health softwares, writing, and other average daily activities (mail, streaming, social networking etc.).

My current laptop is a 2012 MacBook Air and I'd like this to last for quite a while.

    Thank you!

Edit: For Context, I also own the entry level iPad Pro 11
