Posted: 26 Jul 2020 08:56 AM PDT Hi all, I have already ordered a Macbook (8th gen, i5/16gb/256gb) for school (Business Management). I am tempted to purchase the iPad Air (64gb, wifi only) (S$719 with free Airpods). I have always heard people saying that the iPad can complement the Macbook for studies. How so? Please advice, thanks! [link] [comments] | ||
[concept] Multiple call screen Posted: 26 Jul 2020 10:40 AM PDT It seems like a lot of people are stressing over the multiple call screen on iOS. The problem with the current implementation is having one screen to display multiple calls with confusing icons, so I have decided to tackle the problem with a simple card-based UI. Current layout:

WWDC Insight: How memory management will get better in iOS 14 Posted: 25 Jul 2020 08:57 PM PDT This post was made in a similar format to this post from two years ago because I love reading about any kind of performance or efficiency improvements that can be extracted from existing hardware and I'm sure all of you do as well. Before I switched to the iPhone I was amazed at how efficient these phones were with memory. When Apple switched to using 2GB of RAM for the iPhone 6S the results were phenomenal and it was owning all of the competition(not just because of memory management but also NVME, but that's another story). Then I got an iPhone 7 in 2017 and I very much enjoyed having all of apps open, all the time. However this efficiency kept going down over the years and now we're in 2020 with iOS 13 reloading apps even on iPhones with 3GB/4GB RAM. My 2GB RAM iPhone 8 reloads the YouTube pretty much every time. Luckily it seems like Apple is making a great deal of progress on this problem with iOS 14. iOS 14 is adding a number of APIs that provide more detail to the developer of why their app is being terminated in the background. Developers will now know if their app is being closed due to excessive background CPU usage, excessive memory usage, iOS needed the memory elsewhere and a whole host of other reasons. In addition to this Apple is encouraging more extensive usage of the "State Restoration" kit that they provide which can help save user inputted text, video play time, etc so that you don't even notice that an app is going through a cold start rather than being resumed from RAM. All of these improvements make the upgrade to iOS 14 really exciting, but I haven't jumped on the public beta because it seems that most of these improvements are supposed to be implemented by application developers which will take time and we'll likely see the improvements from this in September. But those of you who have upgraded to iOS 14 are you noticing any improvements in memory management that comes from the system side? [link] [comments] |
