iOS 14 addresses most of what kept me with Android

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 09:30 AM PDT

I have always kept an iPhone (currently a XS Max) but with the new features in iOS 14 I don't see myself switching back to Android. Namely, the app library which allows for a less cluttered layout: I never liked page after page of undifferentiated apps. Now I keep the most important ones on the homescreen and have everything else in the library. I'm not a huge fan of Apple's "smart" categories: Amazon is in Lifestyle? I guess? And then there are the widgets: I keep the large weather widget at the top of the page.

I wish iOS allowed you to arrange apps at the bottom of the screen; with ever-larger phones, Apple should embrace design principles that enhance ease of use.

Otherwise, while 14 appears in some ways to be a fairly minor update, these changes are long overdue and sorely needed.

Will Apple ever make the fastest consumer laptop again? - How the switch to Apple Silicon might give Apple a chance

    Posted: 17 Jul 2020 08:47 AM PDT

Back in the day, Apple used to make some of the fastest laptops on the market. Does anyone think that this will happen again as Apple improves their own silicon and software?

I think Apple might be able to do this. ARM chips generally run much cooler and are much more power efficient than x86 & x86_64 CPUs. This could enable Apple to push their new CPUs to higher speeds and core counts that wouldn't otherwise be possible due to power and heat constraints.
