    New Macbook battery draining fast

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 02:45 AM PDT

    I got a new Macbook Pro 13 inch 2020

    1.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5

    16 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3

My battery is draining like 20% per hour, and I'm only surfing the web?

I ran a diagnostics test and it was all clear.

The status of the battery is normal.

I also did an SMC reset.

I spoke to Apple and they didn't really have any further advice?

The only reason I can think that it's doing this is because I'm using a mains extension to charge it. Is this normal? Should I potentially send it back?

OSX won't detect external drive until reboot

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 01:03 AM PDT

    Hi

I wonder if anyone can suggest a solution to this issue. I have a MacBook Air running Catalina 10.15.4 but it was an issue in all previous versions too.

I have an external drive that I use for time machine. If I sleep my machine without ejecting the drive first when it comes back from sleep it will no longer recognise the drive. I have tried unplugging and powering off the drive but that doesn't work. The only think that works is to reboot my machine which is a faff.

The disk is shown in Disk Utility but is greyed out and says "unmounted".

I have tried using Jettison to eject the drive before sleep but that doesn't work for reasons I can't fathom.

Any suggestions as to how to make OSX see the drive without a reboot? Happy to get my hands dirty on the command line!

    2019 15” MBP Not Displaying 3440x1440

    Posted: 31 May 2020 06:55 PM PDT

I recently got a new AOC 34' curved 3440x1440p 144hz monitor. My personal 2019 13" MBP runs 3440x1440 at 120hz with no problem, but my brothers work 2019 15" MBP can only run 2560x1080 at 60hz. I've tried resetting SMC,PRAM but still can't get 3440x1440 to work.

Were using the same usb c to display port on both laptops. When I first connected the cable to his laptop, I did see 3440x1440 for a quick second, and then the screen went dark and now that resolution doesn't show up on his 15" MBP.

Any ideas what we can do to fix this? The 15" MBP has a better graphic card than the 13" MBP so there's no reason why we can't get 3440x1440 to work on his laptop.

    Thanks!

Is it worth updating my Mac's OS?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 07:14 AM PDT

I have a non-retina MacBook Pro mid 2012 with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 and 8GB Ram. Due to my stupidity and fear, I haven't really updated my OS since El Captain, do you guys think it's worth updating for the security updates ect?

I'm hesitant about the more newer OS, since my Mac is so old (almost 5 years) which would best the OS to update to that won't ruin my Mac? And how would I go about doing it?

    Thanks!

Airplay symbol consistently in toolbar after 10.15.5 update

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:51 PM PDT

I now see the airplay icon and yesterday I saw a airplay device listed when I clicked on it. However I only have Roku and Chromecast, and neither of those devices are "airplay" devices. There is nothing else connecting to my Wifi that I can think of that is compatible.

Does anyone know if they added additional support for Airplay in 10.15.5?

When I reboot the MBP the first boot results in the "no entry" sign; cycling the power will reboot correctly. I have run various check disk programs including first aid and nothing reported as an issue - any ideas?

Is there a Screen Share issues between OS versions?

    Posted: 31 May 2020 12:40 PM PDT

I'm currently running Mojave 10.14.16, and I can ask to share their screen with a number of folks, and it works fine. The one person I need to is running Sierra 10.12.6, and while he sees my invites, and even accepts, all I get is he's not available or unable to communicate with the standard requests to check the remote computer isn't blocking screen sharing.

Apple's gotten involved. They seemed to be able to screen share, once, from their end with him. After a while, they just gave up.

Are there known problems Screen Sharing between these different versions of OS X / macOS? Ports or protocols change?

[The backstory is the guy I'm trying to help is an internationally known calligrapher and font designer, and when he upgraded his machine not only did his font making tools stop working, but his machine ran horribly slow. That did result in 400 miles of driving to take him to an Apple Store, in which they discovered his iMac, which was certainly capable according to specs, was slightly older and manifested a bug within Catalina. They reinstalled to what came with the machine, and that resolved the speed issues, the software issues, but introduced the Screen Sharing issues.]

    Scheduling on Mail

    Posted: 31 May 2020 12:00 PM PDT

I am using Mail v 13.4 on macOS Catalina 10.15.5.

I am trying to schedule an email to be sent at a specific time. When I Google this problem there is lots of suggestion that there should be a scheduling button adjacent to the send button in the mail window, but its not present. I've searched the app help directory for "schedule" and found nothing.

    Can anyone help with this?

    Re-format a iMac late 2012 with hdd

    Posted: 31 May 2020 11:57 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have an iMac 21.5 inch late 2012 with an HDD and 10.15.5 . Since the APFS change it's been slowing down constantly at the point that is a pain to use. This is because of how APFS work, making it slow for HDD. It's not used heavily, just mail, chrome and ms office.

Changing to SSD unfortunately is not a choice - I have to stick with an hdd.

I would also prefer to stay on the latest software, which will be likely be 10.15.5 . I understand that earlier software versions do not force to change to APFS, but I prefer to stay with Catalina if possible.

My plan is to backup everything, format and reinstall the os (with a usb stick with the Catalina installer), restore everything and putting as much stuff as possible into an hfs+ partition, so the slowdown slows down (lol)

How can I backup the following?

Mails and their documents Desktop wallpaper Settings Voice memos Safari passwords, settings, extensions, reading list

I've read that it's possible to change the users' home directory. I plan to do that to put it into an hfs+ partition. Is there other stuff I can move into the hfs+ partition?

    Thank you.

Battery discharging when plugged in after 10.15.5 update

    Posted: 31 May 2020 04:55 AM PDT

Hi, so after updating to the latest macOS, it seems as if one of the features of the improved battery condition handling is it discharges for some percents when my MBP 16" is plugged in and under light load.

Have any of you also experienced this? I haven't had this "issue" before so I'm wondering whether it's normal or not.

Apple iMac (Late 2009, 21") always selects the wrong boot device

    Posted: 31 May 2020 10:48 AM PDT

    Hello!

I still have got an iMac from late 2009 at my house. I figured out that my grandparents could make good use of it, so I tried to repair it. Unfortunately, it always selects the wrong boot device by default. I tried installing Windows 7 via BootCamp back in 2014. The installation failed because the iMac had two hard drives, which the Windows 7 installer had problems with. After restarting the Mac, it always tries to boot into the boot stick, which is not there anymore. So the Mac boots up into a white screen, does the startup chime, and after 5 minutes, a blinking cursor on a black background appears. No Apple logo does appear during the startup. However, I can still boot into macOS (High Sierra) by pressing Alt before turning the Mac on and selecting the SSD as the boot device. Also, the Mac does not take all key combinations during startup. I'm unable to boot into Hardware test, Recovery or PRAM reset. Even resetting the SMC did not work.

Sorry for my bad english. Ask any questions if you need to.
