16-inch Macbook Pro with Catalina: Black Screen / freeze after wake up from sleep Posted: 03 Jun 2020 01:39 AM PDT Hey guys, I started to have this problem recently. I got a new 16-inch Macbook Pro, less than 1 month. I started noticing this issue I think after the last update to 10.5.5. When I let the Macbook sleep and wake it up it always freezes/has black screen and nothing wake's it up except a hard reset. I tried the trick with deleting everything in /Library/Extensions -> actually I found out that when I delete Dropbox.kext and restart then it didn't happen, so I though the issue was fixed. But then again after a longer period of sleep when I tried to open the Macbook it was frozen again. I should point out that it's also connected to external display with DP to USB-C cable. Anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks. [link] [comments]
Hoovering mouse over volume icon results in a network performance drop Posted: 03 Jun 2020 02:50 AM PDT In Romania we have a saying which goes like "you hit something in one place and it cracks in another place". Well this seems to be the case with Catalina. I've been running lots of Zoom calls as part of my job and noticed that everytime I adjust the volume with the slider in the menu bar voice session drops. This has been constant behaviour for the past few good months, throughout the minor OS updates. After some investigation I concluded the events are indeed related although can't understand why really. Whenever I click on the volume icon latency spikes to 10x-15x the regular one and remains irregular for at least 2-3 seconds, resulting in some packet drops and some jitter. It probably has something to do with OS querying AirPlay devices but honestly I don't know. Anyway - I installed a latency checker which pings 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1 every 0.8 seconds and displays the result in the menu bar. I recorded a video as a proof and reaching out to wider audience here for opinions - don't even know where to start troubleshooting. Here is the screen recording: [link] [comments]
MacOS 10.15.5 Supplemental Update making regular kernel panic reboots Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT Since I installed the supplemental update, my MacBook Air is regularly kernel panicking (watchdogd not responding for 9x seconds). Anyone else experiences the same? [link] [comments]
Have you ever been curious about the purpose of .DS_Store files? Posted: 02 Jun 2020 12:23 PM PDT I have a digital forensics channel on YouTube, and create content (on a Mac) covering Windows, macOS, and Linux forensics and other information security-related topics. I recently released an episode about .DS_Store files, their purpose, and their forensic/investigative value. I thought it might be of interest to some here. [link] [comments]

Facetime app won't end call even though call ended on iPhone Posted: 02 Jun 2020 10:40 AM PDT When the Facetime app is not closed on macOS (MBP 2017), and I receive the call on my iPhone (iPhone XS), the side bar that shows Phone Number using your iPhone Video, Mute, End won't close. Clicking End button doesn't do anything. Only quitting FaceTime app would make that notification disappear, but after that, and restarting the FaceTime app still triggers the same notification on the top right, making the FaceTime app on the mac unusable. Ending the phone call on my iPhone doesn't seem to do anything either. macOS Version: 10.15.5 iOS Verison: 13.5.1 connected on same home Wi-Fi. [link] [comments]
Accidentally Deleted Mac OS Partition - Running Windows 10 Bootcamp Posted: 02 Jun 2020 09:51 PM PDT So I recently tried to partition my computer so that I can create some more space for games on Bootcamp. When using the partitioning wizard, I accidentally deleted the unallocated space (MacOS) instead of the new space I created (D:) drive. I tried using Mac Recovery (Command R) and it looks like my files and operating system are lost in limbo in the unallocated space. I tried using Test Disk but it couldn't find it. On startup, nothing happens unless if I hold the option key to start up on Bootcamp I don't want to pay for the other programs to recover what I did. Is there any way I can somehow recover my files without going to an Apple Store (closed because of quarantine?) [link] [comments]

Make sure to report any issues to Apple through Feedback Assistant Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:19 AM PDT This subreddit is usually used for technical help and/or asking help/workarounds for existing bugs. The community here is very helpful, but usually this help is in vain, when the issue is related to an apparent bug. Apple allows bug reports from users through Feedback Assistant app (if you are enrolled in a beta program) and Feedback Assistant website (https://feedbackassistant.apple.com). I am not sure that Apple QA staff follows this subreddit, therefore in order for Apple to see the issue, a bug report is the only way. This is the only way that Apple engineers can be notified of your issue. I can't say Apple fixed all the issues I've reported in the past, but in my experience, a significant portion has been acted upon. To mods: Please consider making this thread sticky, or any other thread with the necessary info you deem fit. Thank you! [link] [comments]

Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:52 PM PDT I have a 13" early 2015 retina MBP. It shipped with a 60w power adapter. It's a work computer I inherited in January. My predecessor did not use it much. I bought a powerbank for it with PD output rated at 87w. The powerbank will charge the MBP while the MBP is off, or idle. But if I'm using it the powerbank charges for a couple of minutes and then switches between charging and powering for a few seconds and then switches off. The MBP battery reports normal health (see below). The MBP charges from mains power no problem while in use. The people I bought the powerbank think the issue is the MBP battery. Does that sound likely? Could sitting unused for long periods have led to battery deteriation not reflected in the cycles or reported health? Auto dark mode doesn't work? Catalina 10.15.5 Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:24 PM PDT Something I've noticed on both my Macbook Pros, one 2014 13" and one 2019 16", is that my dark mode set to auto doesn't seem to work on both machines. I've tried the shutdown/restart and turning on night shift. Some older posts I came across were adamant that night shift is tied to dark mode (because when the feature first came out when you hovered over the Auto option a tooltip would pop up saying so, but that's since been removed as far as I can tell). What's weird is that my Catalina Dynamic Wallpaper adjusts accordingly to time but my menu bar will just remain in Light Mode until I manually go into General settings and re-toggle Auto (when it's night time past sunset) - which sort of defeats the purpose of auto mode. One poster on MacRumors forum said he has the same issue and it seems Wallpaper and system Night Mode (stuff like menu bar and other apps) have separate servers that dictate when your sunset is and so when to enable night mode. I've seen one post on Apple's discussion forum mention that the setting could be tied to DNS, but I'm unfamiliar with how to change that setting on macOS. Has anyone had this issue and fixed it successfully? [link] [comments]
Posted: 02 Jun 2020 07:19 PM PDT I've received a MacBook Pro 2011, gifted from a friend. It's currently running macOS Lion and I am wanting to update it to Catalina with a patch (please tell me if this is a bad idea, Mac newbie here). From what I can tell so far, in order to do that, I need to upgrade to Sierra, then to High Sierra, then I will be able to use the patch to get to Catalina. My boyfriend did update some hardware, including a new SSD and ram, if that's helpful. So my question is essentially, am I going about this the right way? Is there another path I need to consider? Mac OS 10.15.4 Infinite Loop on Late 2015 MacBook Pro Posted: 02 Jun 2020 06:23 PM PDT On my late 2015 MacBook Pro it says there's a software update for 10.15.4, so I try and update it like I've done dozens of times This time though it starts to update, downloads, restarts, and immediately asks to update again. I've done this 4-5 times now and it's almost in an infinite update loop where it's not applying the update. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Skype lowers volume on mac - didn't used to Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:39 PM PDT I teach online and often need to play audio or video clips to my students while I screen share on Skype. This worked well until today when the volume was radically reduced, seemingly by Skype (but perhaps by the mac system?) Any ideas how to override this? Any alternatives I can use on a mac to play audio and video clips for my students? Any help much appreciated!! [link] [comments]
Odd results after installing latest OSX update Posted: 02 Jun 2020 05:01 PM PDT I installed the 10.15.5 update on my MBP 16" a few days ago and had no issues. Today I installed the 10.15.5 supplemental update (build 19F101). After rebooting, the resolution on my external monitor became drastically reduced; disconnecting and reconnecting the external monitor didn't help. In addition, Finder didn't see a thumb drive I thereafter inserted (using Apple's USB-C to USB-A adapter). After trying numerous things I finally gave up and rebooted again. That seems to have solved the issue. Anyone else ever experience something similar after installing an OS update? [link] [comments]

Early 2011 MBP upgrade questions Posted: 02 Jun 2020 04:20 PM PDT I'm on High Sierra currently and looking to do a fresh format. I've got all my docs backed up and looking to create a boot from my thumb drive after I updgrade. I've ordered my SSD and my RAM. I'm looking to go to Catalina but don't know if I can boot into Catalina or if needs the patch. I can do my thumb with High Sierra and then do the patch? I don't mind downloading the OS twice if it's safer or the correct way to go about it. Any other input greatly appreciated [link] [comments] |
