Anyone able to help diagnose repeating kernel panic on 19F101? Can’t login after running softwareupdate -ai Posted: 11 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT Tried running software update from terminal and restarted my machine with a power down (per instructions here: https://medium.com/@bepieter/how-to-fix-problems-with-installing-the-macos-catalina-10-15-5-update-de666fc7cf9 ) , and now it boots straight to login screen. With black background. When I select user, it centers profile, and there is a flashing cursor in top left. but no option to enter password or anything else. Can't boot into safe mode, as I don't see the Apple logo. Tried a first aid in recovery mode and nothing changed. Also tried to force boot into safe mode through recovery mode term with " nvram boot-args="-x" and nothing changed. Any suggestions, or is it time to reinstall through recovery and hope? Booting hiccups in Catalina, normal? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 08:49 PM PDT I just upgraded the ram of my iMac 21.5 4K (2017) and everything seems to be working as it should (now faster and smoother), but I have a small question about the booting screen. When I turn on the iMac the Apple logo and the progress bar show up as always, but when the progress bar reaches about 50% the screen goes blank for a second and then the logo and the bar reappear and the boot finishes normally (in about 13 seconds). As I said, everything else is working correctly, but I don't remember that the boot screen had that small "hiccup". Can someone confirm that this is normal behaviour? Do I have to worry about something? Thanks in advance! [link] [comments]
How do I turn off the mic icon? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:17 PM PDT I enabled dictation 2 weeks ago so I can speak and essay. It was nice, but when I double clicked "fn" again, it won't turn off. Even in system preferences it says that dictation is turned off, but the little microphone icon is still there. All it says is "Wake Up" and "Sleep". How do I get rid of it??? Also, all apps are closed. [link] [comments]
Cannot Boot Into Safe Mode. Is There An Alternative Without Holding "Shift"? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 10:08 AM PDT Is there a backdoor way to load up Safe Mode? My 2012 MBP has been acting up the past few days and I'm trying to boot into Safe Mode, but it will not take. I trying holding either Shift button down during system start. It boots to the file vault log-in screen. I enter my PW, then hold shift again. During the loading progress bar, it loads way too fast (normally Safe Mode creeps along), then at half way loaded, the screen goes black and the system shuts off. I've done the NVRAM / PRAM and SMC Reset procedures as best as I can tell (there's no confirmation notice). No new software installs. No new OS upgrade. Still on Mojave. [link] [comments]

Catalina: WiFi Monitor mode for external devices? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 09:40 PM PDT Can external devices on Catalina go into "monitor mode"? The internal WiFi cards on Macbooks support it without any problem, but plug an external WiFi card in via USB and that external device can't go into monitor mode. Am I just using the wrong device / drivers? The device in question is an ALFA AWUS036ACH using the official latest drivers from ALFA. This exact same device has no problem with monitor mode when running as a device inside a VM on the same Macbook. [link] [comments]

Help! Over 50GB in 'Other' Storage Posted: 11 Jun 2020 05:29 PM PDT Can someone give me tips on how to free up this space? I've already made sure my trash is empty and I don't even have iMovie or any backups that I can find taking up space. I've tried deleting caches but I don't really know what they are for and I don't want to delete them all in case I erase something important. Late last year, Photos took up most of my storage and 'Other' was basically nonexistent. I've already put my pictures in iCloud and Photos is now 100 MB, I don't know what happened with OTHER. Do you know of any program that can clean this up that won't get me a virus or leave me with even more storage? Or can anyone help me actually know what could be taking up space in there? Literally my own stuff takes up 12GB, and freaking Other is 56GB. Also, my Storage is only 121 GB so this is really a problem. I need help please! [link] [comments]

2019 Macbook pro goes deep sleep and kills access to webapps it runs Posted: 11 Jun 2020 03:33 PM PDT I bought a 2019 16" macbook pro with the hopes of it replacing a desktop in my setup. It has 64GB ram and runs a number of web apps I access from across the network. It also has a bunch of external drives attached to it that also serve the network. The issue is I can not get it to not sleep in such a way as to cut off access to the applications or disconnect the drives from itself. It is very weird, I have it set ( on power settings) to never put the display to sleep, to never power down the drives, to wake on network access and to prevent the computer from sleeping automatically when lid is closed, yet every night the system goes to sleep and webapps stop responding. Any suggestions? [link] [comments]
Is Catalina required to run Xcode? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 05:22 AM PDT Hi. I'm going to be developing an iOS app with Xamarin, and run into problems with it because Xcode is missing. Upgrading Mac book pro Mid 2012 Memory Cards Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:37 AM PDT So I have a mid 2012 13" Mac book Pro - 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 its maxed out at with 2 - 4GB cards of memory, I plan to do an update myself of 2 - 8GB cards to get me to 16 GB. I work with a lot of adobe software and its hard to get anything done with all the freezing. I've seen multiple tutorials online and it seems pretty straight forward, enough that my lack of tech skills can probably do it. I just have a few questions and worries I was hoping I could get help on.
thanks for any insights! I appreciate it. [link] [comments]

Posted: 11 Jun 2020 01:16 PM PDT Last night I set up a Bootcamp partition and used it most of the night. When I went to sleep I just closed the lid on the laptop. Woke up this morning and opened it back up and it was booting back up into windows even though I never shut off the computer. I held the power button so I could restart into MacOS but after the computer shut off I haven't been able to turn it back on. Spoke to Apple support, tried a few key combinations including resetting SMC and holding for ten seconds and then pressing. Have had it plugged into power for hours now and nothing at all. It's a 2016 MBP on Catalina. I made an appt at my local Apple store but it's a week from now and I need my computer so if you're willing to offer some solutions I'd be so grateful. Computer shows NO signs of power Thanks. [link] [comments]
Snap to Grid all folders in Catalina? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:57 PM PDT I can't seem to find an option to snap to grid as default when I go into view options, which I think is not logical as I want my items to look in line with every folder I go into, having to snap them to grid one by one seems very silly. Did Mac remove this option? Because my online research showed that this was possible back in 2012, and I can't see why they would get rid of such a useful function. [link] [comments]
Macbook Pro does not recognise trackpad/keyboard on wakeup Posted: 11 Jun 2020 06:46 AM PDT Hey all, I have been using a new macbook pro from the beginning of this year and it is a frequent thing that, when opening the lid (and the OS waking up) my trackpad + built-in keyboard are not recognised, they simply do not work... system is irresponsive to any of their inputs. They eventually get recognised (maybe 30 seconds after?) or sometimes I must close the lid once again and reopen it for these inputs to be considered by the OS.... I do not use any external peripherals, so these are the only inputs connected. Does somebody else have the same issue? [link] [comments]
Customizing "Applications" in the Dock? Posted: 11 Jun 2020 12:05 PM PDT Is there a way to use Group by Category within Application folder that's sitting in the Dock? I know I can use View - Group By - Application Category in Finder when I'm looking at my applications, but I'd like to use this feature when I'm clicking on the Applications icon in the Dock. The Applications Category isn't perfect, since a lot of applications don't have a Category assigned, and there doesn't seem to be a way to add a category to the application. But, I have a lot of apps and I'd like to use list that pops up when I click on the Applications icon, instead of using the "Open in Finder" option at the bottom. Is there an app that will reorder the list for me? The Category field is nice, but it's not customizable. Thanks. [link] [comments] |
