Hard-line separating work from play on MacOS? Posted: 10 May 2020 12:10 AM PDT This is a cross post from learnprogramming since it apparently isn't appropriate for their sub. I'm an academic who has strict legal requirements to keep my work and non-work online interactions very much separate due to legal regulations around working with children. Recently my workplace has instituted a bring your own device policy which has me concerned. Maybe 15% of my present job is programming or programming related. I have a set of dot files and online logins that are provided by my work institution (think G-Suite and other such educational tools, printer and network share access, etc.) I have a separate set of dot files and online logins for my own personal projects outside of work (like this Reddit account), and a third set for professional work away from my institution (think conferences or journals or whatever that all of their own submission formats and tech requirements.) Obviously, before I would just use two different machines but that isn't an option now since we are moving to BYOD, and I simply have my personal MBP. I don't want my employer (or students, for example) knowing I might be searching out other employment opportunities or putting together a portfolio, working on a zombie shooter in my spare time or whatever. You can imagine how jumpy people are about this type of thing causing issues in education, I'm sure. I also don't want to fire up the wrong YouTube account by accident because of browser cache or previous logins. Surely this is an issue programmers also have to deal with when it comes to copyright assignments and work searches. I don't think running a bunch of VMs are good solution here. Yes, I'm prematurely worrying about cross contamination between these three very different domains. Other instructors at my workplace are equally as concerned and as I am the nominal "programming teacher", they are looking to me for suggestions. It obviously isn't as simple as when using multiple devices. TL:DR; In a BYOD scenario on a MBP, how do you make sure your work stuff, personal stuff, and whatever other stuff, don't get mixed together and cause copyright issues or embarrassment during meetings? I've tried running VMs but that's a ton of overhead and not really a viable long term solution I don't think. MacOS doesn't have jails and managing every app or browser instance with chroot seems needlessly inelegant. [link] [comments]
App for comparing two .docx file side-by-side? Posted: 09 May 2020 11:27 PM PDT I want to compare two Microsoft Word files (.docx) just like you can do with source files, text files, Markdown files, and so on within vim `diff` command (inside the terminal). There is this cool app draftable that does precisely what I want (plus some other cool features) but it's only for Windows. I live my life on the Apple ecosystem, so that's not a solution for me. I've also stumble upon Kaleidoscope which also seems quite powerful and Diffchecker. They both provide desktop apps for macOS at a reasonable price, however, these two only compare text files, not actual Word documents. (the only solution would be to copy-paste the text from the two .docx files, which is not very feasible since I have like 600+ word docs with headers and footers). So my questions is: does anyone know a direct alternative to Draftable that is available on macOS? [link] [comments]

Macbook Air 2012 on life support Posted: 10 May 2020 12:22 AM PDT I have an aging but still competent MBA from 2012. It is still snappy and quick for most tasks, but after I have HUGE issues with useless background MacOS tasks slowing my computer down. The issues became worse after I upgraded to Catalina. I now consistently have these tasks running, eating up 50-90% of my capacity consistently:
I managed to kill off photoanalysed after decoupling iCloud and force quitting that process, but the ones above keep on popping back up everytime I force quit them (and yes, also with terminal commands to properly kill them off)! My upgrade to Catalina was more than a month ago, so it would be ridiculous if the OS was still 'indexing' my stuff. Anyone know tricks to kill off all these tasks? They don't seem to be doing anything at all and are drastically slowing down what is actually still a good and healthy laptop :'( [link] [comments]

Posted: 09 May 2020 11:30 PM PDT Hi there guys, just want to ask someone who's a lot more experienced with Windows 10 Virtual Machine on Parallel Desktop. Does the Macbook Pro 16" i9 2.3GHz 8 Core/5500M 4GB/16GB RAM/1TB SSD offers a better performance when running the Windows 10 virtual machine on Parallel Desktop compared to the Macbook Pro 16" i7 2.6GHz 6 Core/5300M 4GB/16GB RAM/512GB SSD I would like to purchase a 16" Macbook Pro, I don't mind a second hand/used one and so far the lowest price for second hand Macbook Pro 16" are:
Don't know if it's going to be worth it to go for the higher configuration so I can get a better performance for Parallel Desktop Windows 10 Virtual Machine. Thanks heaps! [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 May 2020 03:09 PM PDT I'm sure this has been asked before, but I can't find where. My mac has 121GB of space or so, and 55+GB are taken up by "the system". I've been looking everywhere online to find out how to reduce it, and I ended up on daisydisk. I can't find many heavy files, though. I tried to delete my time machine backups and it turns out I have none. I've had it disabled for as long as I can remember. Also, now I just want to backtrack on downloading Catalina altogether but I can't. The terms&conditions can't be closed, even when I turned my laptop on and off. I tried to delete Catalina from apps, but not only will it ignore my delete command, but it also says its weight is 8GB even though it ate up A LOT more than that when I first tried to download it. I desperately need help, my country is on lockdown for at least 3 more weeks which means there are no apple stores open to go and ask a tech for help :/ [link] [comments]

Mac OS Catalina 10.15.4 and Docking Station Posted: 09 May 2020 11:22 AM PDT I just recently got my new MacBook Pro 16 and really content with it. I have this generic USB C dock from my previous Window notebook that I wanted use with MacBook. All ports except the HDMI ports work as expected. The MacBook doesn't detect the monitors. I reseted the NVRAM serval times but I couldn't get it working. Did anybody else encounter this issue? [link] [comments]
I need to restart my Mac almost every day... this is ridiculous Posted: 09 May 2020 02:58 PM PDT Sorry if this isn't the place to ask, but it's a problem I can't ignore anymore. I am running Mojave on a 2015 15-inch Macbook Pro with 16GB of RAM. Overall, I don't have many complaints, the performance is good and can play most of my games with a butter-smooth framerate and have no trouble running multiprocess computational workflows. My amount of free memory has hovered around 5-10GB which I'll admit isn't great but I don't download that much these days. Starting a few months ago, I was getting an issue where either a screen popped up saying that application memory was low and I needed to shut down some programs, or I wouldn't be able to save due to not having enough space, and looking at the available storage it would be in the MB's. However, it didn't happen that often and I did tend to leave my computer on with a lot of chrome tabs open in the background, so doing a full reboot a week here and there would be enough to deal with the problem. After restarting, the amount of free memory went significantly up so I thought it might be an issue with tmp files building up or something. Jump forward to today and I literally have to do this everyday, sometimes multiple times a day. For the RAM issue sometimes restarting chrome would fix it and sometimes it wouldn't. As for the no space available issue... restarting or shutting down while keeping windows open wouldn't be enough. It has to be a full shutdown and startup, after which the amount of system memory would jump by several GB. Any guesses as to why this might be happening or some potential solutions? Haven't found any references to this online so really any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks! [link] [comments]
Changing itunes to play off an external drive? Posted: 09 May 2020 11:31 AM PDT I'm trying to change my itunes library to play off of an external hard drive, but every time I try to switch the location I get an error message (see video). Can anyone help with this? [link] [comments]
Posted: 09 May 2020 01:42 PM PDT With the jump to MacOS and the Music app from OSX and iTunes I noticed that Apple had changed the behavior of the shortcut ⌘+L. I don't know if anyone else has noticed or if they did, it doesn't bother them as much as it does for me. This is minor quality of life change that I cannot understand why it was changed in the first place. What I am talking about is that when you are in the list view of your songs, back in iTunes hitting ⌘+L would jump the list to the currently playing song. Now in the Music app when you hit ⌘+L it jumps to the album view. It's maddening, and even worse, the official support page still claims it does the old iTunes behavior! So my reason for this post is to try my luck and see if anyone else has noticed this, hates it as much as I do, and perhaps even found some kind of plugin to correct the shortcut behavior. Help with 2013 Macbook Pro (possibly OS issues) Posted: 09 May 2020 04:32 PM PDT First issue: Whenever I go into my browser I can only open one tab at a time, like it is not showing the hotbar above where I can switch between different tabs easily. I am using safari. How do I get the hotbar that shows the multiple tabs? Second issue: The trackpad is annoying to use because ever time to click on something I need to fully press down. I would prefer to have it to where I could touch. My chromebook is a lot easier to use with the touchpad. Also the DPI of the touch bar is too low, I would like to know how to adjust this. Third issue: It is minor, but whenever opening it, I smear my fingets on the glass bezel leaving a fingerprint mark. How do I open it without doing this? Any answers would really improve my experience with this machine. [link] [comments]
