Can I buy a MacBook from Apple with the education discount with all Apple/iTunes gift cards so I don’t have to enter my credit card?

How does Apple make sure you are a student for the student discount? I went to checkout to see and they didn’t ask for a .edu email or anything.

best place to get macbook (mid-2012) ram?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 11:01 PM PDT

I have a mid-2012 Macbook pro with 8gb ram and I'm looking to upgrade to 16gb. I've seen some options for $64 but I want to see what other options are out there.

MBP 2019 baseline upgrade to MBP 2020 baseline or 10th-gen

    Posted: 09 May 2020 10:55 PM PDT

I have been using 13-inch MBP 2019 baseline model for a year. I do coding and occasional number crunching with it.

Now that the new models are out, I am thinking about upgrading to the new 13-inch MBP 2020 but I am a bit torn with the choice.

    1) Go for the 8th-gen. Basically this would be paying $600 after trade-in for the new keyboard.

    2) Go for the 10th-gen. I don't use graphics, but the higher-end models have two fans whereas the baseline models have only one fan. Better thermals would be a nice thing to have.

    3) Stay and wait for the 14-inch. This way I keep the money, but the trade-in value will decease over time.

I am staying away from 16-inch models because I need portability.

How noticeable is the screen difference between the 2020 MacBook Air and Pro? I heard that the pro is more colors accurate, but how noticeable is it, and is this the only difference between the screens?

Would a MacBook Air 15.4" + MacBook pro 14.1" make sense in the lineup?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 05:40 PM PDT

Everything is in USD in this post.

As the title suggests, would there be a place for a 15.4" MacBook Air with the MacBook pro 14.1"?

With the addition of 15.4" MBA, and removing the basemodel 13.3" with only 2 ports, the lineup could be like the following:

    • MacBook Air 13.3" - $999 [Y series i3, 256gb ssd, 8gb RAM, 2 x Thunderbolt ports]
    • MacBook Air 15.4" - $1,350 [Y series i5, 256gb ssd, 8gb RAM, 2 x Thunderbolt ports]
    • MacBook Pro 14.1" - $1,799 [U series i5, 512gb ssd, 16gb RAM, 4 x Thunderbolt ports]
    • MacBook Pro 16" - $2,399 [H series i7, 512gb ssd, 16gb RAM, 4 x Thunderbolt ports, Radeon Pro 5300M]

I think the rationale for this would be simple:

    • Better distinguish Air vs. Pro. Most people don't know the differences between different versions of i5 chips. Making the screen size even slightly bigger helps (e.g., iPad Air 10.5" vs. iPad Pro 11")

    • Related to first point, the "Pro" labels make more sense in terms of weight as well. I think almost subconsciously people can relate weight to power. 16" MBP is bigger and heavier than 15.4" MBA; 14.1" MBP is bigger and heavier than 13.3" MBA.

    • Also related to first point: All Air models have 2 ports. All Pro models have 4 ports. Simple.

    • There are people who really want a screen that's tiny bit bigger than the 13.3". that additional two inch of screen real estate means wonder when you have split screen work. The point is to have options. Also I really believe older users like bigger screens, but are not willing to spend $2,399 for the MBP 16".

Thoughts? Would having 15.4" MBA and 14.1" MBP in the lineup be stupid and useless?

[HELP] MacBook Pro w/Catalina overrides HDTV display settings

    Posted: 09 May 2020 04:39 PM PDT

I am connecting my 2016 13" MBP running Catalina with a Samsung 4K TV via Type-C to HDMI. My Samsung TV has calibrated display settings tuned to how I like my display.

However, whenever I connect my MacBook to the TV, the TV's display settings are completely overrides and it doesn't respect the individual gamma/brightness or other inputs I had provided.

Is there way to avoid that? Alternatively do I need to change the colour settings on my Mac.

PS: I have always change settings from Mac settings to output 4k/60 via the cable. Just that the image is too dark.

I have an early 2015 mba with the i5, 8gb ram and an upgraded nvme 256ssd. Will I have enough processing power to learn a good foundation? Also, do you think it's worth getting a 2nd screen?

Continuous charging when connected to external display

    Posted: 09 May 2020 07:15 PM PDT

Hi, I have a 2020 MacBook Pro 16" and I use it with the lid closed, connected to an external LG 34" 5Kx2K Nano IPS display. The laptop is being charged by the display and sits at 100% battery even without the charger being plugged in.

I tend to just leave everything on about 15 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Will this significantly decrease my battery life? I bought the MacBook in the first place because I need to take the laptop with me on the road for work, so I must maintain as much mobile power capacity as possible.

MacBook Air 2020 i5 vs base model MacBook Pro 2020 battery life

    Posted: 09 May 2020 03:02 PM PDT

Hey guys so I'm a student hoping to get into medical school in the next two years. I'm using an older windows laptop right now and want to get a MacBook so I started doing a bit of research. In the end it came down to the MacBook Air 2020 with an i5 processor for an extra $100 or the MacBook Pro 2020 base model. With my education discount I can get them at the respective prices of $999 and &1199. I will be doing mostly lighter work but might maybe edit like 10 minute YouTube vlogs or play legends of runeterra (riot games' card game pretty light game). My biggest concern is battery life and would like to get the machine with the better battery compared to performance unless there's a huge performance difference. My iPhone 11 Pro Max made me realize how much I value battery life. From my researching, I'm getting mixed results with the Pro sometimes having better battery life but some saying the Air does. Does anyone have real world experience with any of the machines that could help me out for my needs? Thank you for your help.

Is MBA 2020 enough for web-designing?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 10:03 AM PDT

Basically, subject. I'm only about to start learning web-design, but I haven't had a laptop for 7-8 years, so I'm completely out of the loop on specs and everything. I'm not even sure how much "horse power" I will need to comfortably run a good amount of browser tabs, Photoshop and possibly music simultaneously. Considering that I'm gonna use Photoshop, Sketch etc a lot, will MBA be enough? And if so, which one exactly? Due to traveling a lot (under normal circumstances) I like MBA more than MBP, so there's that. I've read countless reviews on every possible option, but would love to hear an opinion from someone who actually does web-designing or something similar. Apart from work, I'm only gonna be using it for music, movies and YouTube/Reddit, usual stuff. No games, I have other devices for that.

I don't use my 2008 MacBook Pro because multiple things have failed, but can it be refurbished?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 02:41 PM PDT

I don't use the MacBook anymore because multiple parts are not working- wireless internet card seems to be no long functional, battery life is horrible, and the mousepad doesn't work. Also, it makes a lot of noise now. This MacBook has been just sitting in my closet for about 2 years now, but a recent YouTube video I watched made me wanna bring it back to life. I got 10 years' use out of it, and if I can make it work life a new MacBook after just replacing a few parts, I want to try to do that.

Can this be done? If yes, do you know anyone who is good at refurbishing old MacBooks?

    Thank you.

    MacBook/PS4 Help

    Posted: 09 May 2020 06:10 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered but I can't seem to find answers so I thought I'd try it out here.

I've been having some complications trying to use discord on my MacBook and play on the PS4.

So my problem is that I can't play a game and chat with my friends at the same time on discord. This is my current headphones that I use https://www.turtlebeach.com/products/recon-50p-headset.

I thought maybe if I buy a splitter cable [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01M315XJT?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share] then I can make it happen. I plug my male connector to the MacBook and the headset to the female connector.

The mic works until I plug in an aux cable from my PS4 controller into the other female connector [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01I0SI1SG/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_Ly0TEbPJZCZDR.]

Once I do that the microphone stops working and the in game audio plays through the headset and my friends only hear my in game audio and not my voice.

I'm not sure why the happens and maybe someone here can help me out or just point me to the right direction. I was thinking maybe I should buy this aux cable instead [https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0793KB2KD/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_nB0TEbZEFQKGF.] Not sure if that'll help though. Please help.

Replacing logic board in 12" MacBook "upgrade"?

    Posted: 09 May 2020 09:30 AM PDT

My 2016 12" MacBook recently died due to not receiving power. I took it to an Apple authorized repair shop which said the logic board needs to be replaced for about $500. They said they would have to send it to Apple.

It currently has a core m5 processor. If I sent it in, would the replacement logic board be the same or a newer version (i5 like we're on the 2027 models)?
