Catalina totally unstable (Late 2013 Macbook) reinstall or downgrade? Posted: 28 May 2020 06:48 PM PDT I upgraded when it first came out and regret that decision, I am actually a new Mac user after switching from PC after my whole life. I wanted better iPhone integration. Every night when I close it I come back in the morning and it reboots and has a sleepwake error. Sometimes the iCloud stuff gets disconnected and my Firefox always restores the last session. I did upgrade my reminders and use them heavily. If I downgrade my Macbook won't see the changes right? Could I make new reminders and migrate them to the old format? If I did roll back what is the easiest way to do this, I have hundreds of GB of data. If I reinstall Catalina what is the best way? I do have time machine backups on a Timecapsule. [link] [comments]
Beware!! Catalina 15.5.5 may brick laptop battery! Posted: 29 May 2020 03:51 AM PDT My Macbook Pro (13', 2019, 2 ports) STOPPED CHARGING after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.5 (19F96) today. I'm using the default charger and cable, which worked without any issue before the update today, yet the battery keeps depleting! The top left battery icon shows as if the battery was charging, yet when I click on it, it says "Battery is not charging". And indeed. What does NOT help:
I'm quite worried when I completely run out of battery juice I won't even be able to install the hopefully forthcoming software fix either... Any help would be much appreciated. Link to an Apple discussion I also opened: [link] [comments]
macOS 10.15.5 menu bar missing on secondary display? Posted: 28 May 2020 03:10 PM PDT I just upgraded last night from 10.15.4 and noticed that I don't have the semi-transparent menu bar on my secondary display anymore. Additionally, I'm unable to activate the dock by moving my cursor to the bottom of the secondary display. As of now, both the menu bar and dock are only usable on whichever display I set as the primary. Anyone else observe this or know how to adjust it? Edit: I found that re-enabling the "Displays have separate Spaces" setting in the Mission Control system preferences pane did the trick for me. [link] [comments]

New to Time Machine, what do I need to know ? Posted: 28 May 2020 03:02 PM PDT I am getting my new MacBook soon and I want to use Time Machine with it but I never used it on my current one. Do you have advice for that ? How much storage do I need to have ? I will use an external drive and save my computer every other day (if that's the way it works), I'll have a 1TB SSD but not going to fill up very fast so I'll be safe with that storage for a while. Also, what is the impact on the computer while it's saving ? In terms of time/performance. Thanks ! [link] [comments]
macOS 10.15.5 Sidecar and Touch Bar Improvements?! Posted: 28 May 2020 09:36 AM PDT For starters, I'm a fresh macOS user; I used to only depend on my iPad Pro as my main computer. However, I'm now studying Swift and Xcode, so that's why bought a MacBook Pro 16". I got it a week ago; before macOS 10.15.5 was released to the general public. Now with the new update all I have to say is.... wow. Am I the only one who noticed the improvements with Sidecar and the Touch Bar? Why didn't Apple mention this in their release notes? With 10.15.5 there is a noticeably smoother/faster black screen transition when connecting/disconnecting my iPad Pro from Sidecar. ALSO, I notice that the Touch Bar on my MacBook Pro finally understands which screen I'm focusing on. While using Sidecar before, the MacBook Pro's Touch Bar would only change for apps on the MacBook Pro display. But now it changes even if I switch focus to an app on the iPad Screen. Please tell me if I'm dreaming this, because this honestly makes my first impression of Sidecar even better. (Also my impression and productivity on the Touch Bar a lot more positive.) Can’t delete plist file (Catalina) Posted: 28 May 2020 08:04 PM PDT Hey guys I can't find any fix for this everything I try doesn't work when following tutorials... Problem is my MacBook Pro is running slow as battery is dead and can't afford to fix it right now. I'm just trying to get it back to full speed. Apparently deleting a plist file is the fix for the issue but there's no option to delete it for me. My computer won't let me change disk permissions for these files either. I just tried entering recovery mode and turning off SIP through terminal but I still get no option to delete the file. Any ideas? TL;DR: how the hell do I delete a plist file? [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 May 2020 07:06 PM PDT in this past few weeks, whenever I start my mac, it always take around 10 full minutes to do the startup after login, during that 10minutes, every apps that I start become "not responding". any suggestion how can I catch which apps causing this? Posted: 29 May 2020 12:53 AM PDT With all the back and forth over the flaws in Catalina, many users recommend a clean install over the standard upgrade route. The received wisdom for OS X/macOS in the past was that upgrading was perfectly fine and the only real benefit from a clean install was psychological peace of mind. Is there and genuine argument im favour of a clean install from Mojave to Catalina (mid-2014 MBP Retina)? I've only upgraded before and never experienced any issues. But now caution reigns! How to get a custom Dynamic Wallpaper to work? (MBA 2020) Posted: 28 May 2020 08:29 PM PDT I just got a 2020 Macbook Air, looking to personalize it. I found this guy https://www.dynamicwallpaper.club/wallpaper/ze2isquaf7n, but when I set it as my desktop, it doesn't seem to want to change with the time of day. Am I doing something wrong? I downloaded it, right click it, and set it as Desktop Picture. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 May 2020 11:51 PM PDT I'm trying to download XCode but the one on the AppStore wants me to be on the latest MacOS update. I don't really want to update my OS because I heard that Photoshop CS5 will no longer work on Catalina, and I'm not really in the mood to pay for the new monthly Adobe subscriptions. But that's beside the point. How do I download the latest compatible version of XCode? I'm on Mojave Ver. 10.14.6 [link] [comments]
New challenge! Hide Finder from the dock. Posted: 28 May 2020 10:58 PM PDT So I use Pathfinder and have been for some time, as its a replacement to finder I've been using the "hide finder" option from the dock. I don't need two Finder icons down there, but of course with Mac OS updates the continued attack on fun and customisation continues. Due to whatever security advances in Mac OS Cocoatech has relented and can no longer offer this feature. So you people out there in the internet, can we find a way to remove the Finder Icon on Mac OS 10.15.4? [link] [comments]
Newly updated Catalina users, do you still experience random Bluetooth disconnections? Posted: 28 May 2020 06:01 AM PDT If you did, were you able to resolve the issue by either resetting the Bluetooth module or deleting Bluetooth's preference list? Or did you use some other solution to fix the problem? [link] [comments]
Running Catalina on Mid-2012 13" Macbook Air w/ 4GB RAM Posted: 28 May 2020 03:51 PM PDT Have an older Macbook Air with High Sierra that I want to use with my phone (i.e. Airdrop and other features) and Sidecar with my iPad, but I only have 4GB of RAM. Apple's website says 4GB is the minimum, and I don't know if it'll be a big bottleneck or not. Do you have any suggestions for running Catalina for a smoother experience, or should I just go to Mojave or stay on High Sierra? [link] [comments]

Shrinking partitions in Lion (or direct clone to slightly smaller drive?) Posted: 28 May 2020 03:26 PM PDT Yeah, I know this is ancient history when it comes to MacOS, but... I have a 2008 MacBook (The black version. Stop laughing...) that is running MacOS Lion, which I basically only keep around for running iPhoto and making photo slideshows because I haven't found any other solution that has results that I like better for that. Yes it's old and slow, but it works - but I was hoping to boost its speed a little bit. It has a 250GB Fujitsu HD, but I have a 240GB SSD that I have left over from other computer projects. It's only 10GB difference, and my experience in the Windows/Linux world (where I have 30 years of experience) tells me that this should be a lot easier than what MacOS's standard tools are telling me. First I tried booting to recovery mode and restoring the 250GB Mac HD to the SSD, but it was not big enough (even accounting for the used space on the HD) - OK, so I tried shrinking the partition to ~200GB, but it hung at around 70% through the process, and after 2 days of waiting I forced a reboot, did a repair, and did not lose any data (it kept sleeping during the process so i had to kick it to wake it up every 20-30 minutes). it's somewhat obvious this is not going to work in recovery mode, but it wasn't giving any diagnostics so I am not sure why it is hanging. Today, I tried shrinking the boot partition in regular mode, but it has been sitting at about 60% for the last 8 hours with no progress (it is not sleeping every 20 minutes, which is good - but not progressing either). I am not holding out much hope for this completing successfully. So far I have not tried any non-Apple solutions/SW for doing this migration - is there anything in the Mac world that will let me clone my Mac system HD to a slightly smaller drive without shrinking the partition? Because it looks like the shrinking is not working on my decrepit MacBook. Any pointers to software/procedures will be appreciated. Oh, I also thought about doing a fresh install of MacOS on the SSD (connected via USB) in recovery mode by accessing the app store, but my login did not work (assuming it is because the login is not supported any more - i am able to log in with my Apple ID via the web on another computer, so it is not a password issue). I do not care about losing any personal data on this laptop, I just want access to the software/OS. I might still have my old Snow Leopard OS DVD somewhere in the house, but this should not be this hard, especially for a company that claims to value the user experience as much as Apple. Sheesh... As a last resort I might get a SSD that is big enough for a direct clone without shrinking the drive ($60), but given the results that I have seen with the Apple tools I am not holding out much hope that it will complete successfully, even though the OG Fujitsu drive is not reporting any errors/issues. Aside from the migration issues, I have had a good experience withe the MacBook. I use it to do 2-3 slideshows per year using iPhoto's 'Vintage Prints' template @1080p and the results are good, even though it takes about 1.5 days to render a 1-hour slideshow. :) Not willing to get a newer MacBook/Mac Mini at this time, unfortunately. Any pointers? [link] [comments]
Spinning Beach Ball - way to log? Posted: 28 May 2020 03:01 PM PDT I have a fairly recurring spinning beach ball problem on my Macbook Pro. I suspect it's Microsoft Outlook (or other Office apps), but I am not sure. Is there a way to log and track these instances over a period of time, so that I can figure out what any regularly recurring culprits might be? Happy to consider purchasing an app if that will do it. I realize I can check Activity Monitor for apps that are hogging the CPU at any one point, but I would prefer a diagnostic method that doesn't depend on me being quick enough to switch over to Activity Monitor right as the beach ball is happening. Any ideas would be great. [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 May 2020 08:41 AM PDT Okay, so I recently upgraded from sierra to catalina. The only problems I have had with catalina has been that my 2012 mac mini doesn't want to auto sleep anymore. Other than that, catalina has been fine except for some small bugs here and there. Do y'all think I should downgrade to mojave? [link] [comments]
Keyboard shortcuts glitching out Posted: 28 May 2020 10:44 AM PDT I have a late 2012 MBP running Mojave but the issue has also taken place while typing on my iPhone. I have a few keyboard shortcuts setup for some common words such as turning 'u' into 'you' or 'nvm' into 'nevermind' and so it goes. But recently it has been glitchy and everytime I use one of the shortcuts it just doubles the last syllable. Like you becomes youyou or nevermindmind. It's quite bizarre honestly. I've removed and re-added the shortcuts but the issue remains. I have absolutely no idea where it's coming from but it's super annoying because instead of making typing faster it just forces me to go back and erase the double ending everytime. Has anyone experienced something similar? [link] [comments]
