I know very little about computers and I bought an old iMac from Macofalltrades and I need help?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:10 PM PDT

I bought a really cheap iMac from 2009 on Mac of all trades 2 years ago and it has no apps on it. No iMovie no GarageBand. I need voice editing software for my stand up comedy monologues and video editing software. I also need Microsoft word I'm mostly a writer and astrologer and Occasionally post on YouTube. I don't use any other programs. I wanted to know if I should use my stimulus check to buy a brand new MacBook Air or if there is some way I could work with this dang computer to make it suit my needs? What the hell is wrong with it??? Any other cheap Mac alternatives? Thanks I hope I'm posting to the right group...

    Safari is not working

I am on Mojave 10.14.6 using Macbook Pro 13 Early 2015. For some reason, safari does not seem to load any webpages. I tried clearing history, cache, cookies but no luck. Also tried changing the DNS to 8.8.8.8 and still no luck. I use Chrome as my default browser(working flawlessly) but I just need access to Safari to add my gmail account into my mail app and its requiring me to go through safari to do that. Help! Here is a picture of whats going on:

Screen video recordings are blurry in Catalina

    Posted: 02 May 2020 01:18 AM PDT

I am trying to record my Mac screen, and the quality is a smidge blurry. I have tried using the command + shift + 5 shortcut as well as opening QT and doing a screen capture there, and it produces the same lackluster quality. If I recall, the screen recordings used to be identical in quality to what the screen actually looks like, and I also recall quicktime having a "quality" option (which is now missing). Is there some way to increase the quality somewhere in some setting? I would prefer to not have to buy third party software, or even install free bloatware when Mac comes with the feature included.

LG Ultrafine 5K won’t turn off (persistent white screen) after Macbook Pro sleeps

    Posted: 02 May 2020 12:29 AM PDT

Just got a brand new 16" mbp and LG 5K display, primarily using it in clamshell mode. Sleeping the macbook pro also sleeps the display for about a second, before it turns back on and displays a white screen that won't go away unless I unplug the power. I've also tried disconnecting the TB3 cable from the mbp to the display, and the same thing happens: display turns off for about a second (goes black) before turning back on again with a white screen. Any ideas? Seems like more of a display issue than a mbp issue.

    Dark mode on login screen?

    Dark mode on login screen?

After reformatting my Macbook pro, and re-installing macOS Catalina, I noticed that my login screen seem to be using a `dark mode` version of the Catalina wallpaper. I initially though this was just because of the dark mode setting being on auto, though it doesn't seem to be the case. Is there a way to reset this to use the default Catalina wallpaper?

Open safari window/inastance with own settings

    Posted: 01 May 2020 11:32 PM PDT

Hi, I would like to have an specific site (youTube) to open as independent Safari window with its own settings (hidden bookmark bar, position on the screen, etc.). Is there any way to do it? I have tried some options like Flotato, Fluid and nativefier, but for instance, full screen mode for YouTube videos is disabled and I cannot use PiP either. Any idea how I could do this? AppleScript? Automator? Thanks!

Macbook slow to shut down and just slow in general after Catalina

    Posted: 01 May 2020 09:42 PM PDT

    Greeting:

I recently upgraded my macbook pro from Sierra (2015 Macbook pro) to Catalina, and I noticed that it has became incredibly slow, loading apps / opening apps / files and folders used to be almost instantaneous and now there's always a delay. And when shutting down my macbook it would get stuck on the wallpaper for ~10 seconds before it actually shuts down.

Anyone else has the same issues?

    Thank You

Erase entire disk or just startup disk during re-install after virus?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:29 PM PDT

I have a Macbook Pro on 10.14. I picked up a virus at some point recently. Luckily, Little Snitch caught it attempting to send data back to its server. It was recommended to me previously that I should erase the entire startup disk, not just the startup volume, prior to re-installing a fresh copy of MacOS. My only concern is that I want to stay on 10.14, however the Apple support link below states that, if I erase the entire startup disk prior to re-installing from the recovery partition, the recovery partition will only offer me the MacOS version that came with the computer, which is 10.9.

    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204904

If that happens, will the installer allow me to upgrade back to 10.14.6, the latest version of 10.14, or will it force me to go all the way to the current version of Catalina, since my computer is compatible with it?

Also, is it truly important to erase the start disk versus just the startup volume?

Unable to boot into Mac OS (Macbook Pro 2012)

Unable to boot into Mac OS (Macbook Pro 2012)

My sister's MacBook Pro 2012 just stopped working the other day, and I've been trying to fix it ever since. At first, we were faced with a flashing folder icon with a question mark. After googling the error I tried booting into Recovery Mode (Cmd + R) but it kept defaulting to network recovery, and for some reason that isn't working at all (I stayed up at night retrying many times but to no avail.. the error code is -2006F if I remember correctly). She stores lots of data in her MacBook and, hasn't been backing it up. Currently, the data stored in the MacBook's SSD is really important and so I was worried it might've been the hard drive dying. I created a bootable USB drive with Lubuntu and the hard drive is connected and "Okay" according to Lubuntu's drive health info. I looked into trying to mount the drive from Lubuntu and copy the data from there but that also didn't work.
I've just created a bootable macOS Mojave USB drive and was finally able to launch Disk Utility and run First Aid. It gives me the following error :
There are obviously no time machine backups (if they were they'd be stored on the drive but macOS is unable to read it..), And no apple repair shops in my country. I don't know what to do.. my hope is resting on the (re-)installation of macOS but I don't know if it will properly work nor if it'll keep the data stored on the disk.
Any help would be appreciated! thanks!

(I took an image with my phone because a screenshot is infeasible..)

Trying to use bluetooth headphones + mic

    Posted: 01 May 2020 08:11 PM PDT

I have a set of bluetooth headphones that have a mic built in (like most, if not all headphones nowadays) but when I set the input device to my headphones, the output quality gets really terrible. Is there a way to remedy that? I'm on a 2012 mac mini on catalina.

Went from 120GB free space to 90GB randomly... What happened?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 07:41 PM PDT

I was at 120GB free space a few days ago after cleaning up my HD a bit and now I am at 90GB out of nowhere... I didn't download or add anything to my HD. What happened? Is this a virus or something? I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Early 2015) and running version 10.15.4 (19E287) of macOS

edit* I restarted my mac and it went back to 122 GB. no idea why this happened or if it will stay like this.

Is enabling sharing (mainly screen sharing) option in system preferences safe?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 06:48 PM PDT

Will my macs only be accessible to each other over the network they're connected to or are they exposed to the outside internet as well?

I just want to be able to enable screen sharing for when my devices are both on the same home network.

Where did all my disk space go???

    Posted: 01 May 2020 10:48 AM PDT

Ok I get it, space is always an issue on a tiny MacBook like mine. But ever since I upgraded to the latest version of Catalina, my storage has been completely destroyed. The HD says it has 8.8MB available.

First, my stats: MacBook Air 13" Early 2015 Edition i5 4gb RAM, 128gb SSD MacOs Catalina 10.15.4

Next, what I've done, and what's going on.

I've deleted over 40GB of files. Cleaned user folders, downloads, backups (visible ones, at least), etc. But every time I delete something though, I watch as, over just a few seconds, those many gigs I just freed up whittle away to something between around 7 & 30mb (not gb).

    I've deleted and emptied trash.

    I've rebooted

I've run fancy disk cleaner apps that was really hard to install because I had to offload like 5gb, and install the program before those 5gb were completely eaten up.

On the root folder, - My Users folder is 16gb - Library is 4gb - Applications is 11.96gb - System is 19.12gb - The HD itself says 8.9mb available of 121.12gb (That actual number goes up and down every few seconds but never gets above 40mb)

But that's barely 50gb. Where's the other 70GB of disk space?

Thanks for any help you can give!

Catalina OS 10.15.4 Eating up disk storage

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:56 PM PDT

I've been seeing this type of problem recently. I just updated to this OS from Mojave for XCode. I'm gravely mistaken.

My storage is getting eaten up right before my eyes. I'm not even downloading anything. I actually factory reset my macbook air 2017 because of this hoping to fix the problem but it didn't. Additionally, my console have been logging these errors:

    • All kCFPreferencesCurrentUser domains in this process will be volatile, because homeDirPath starts with /var/empty
    • unable to create CacheDeleteDaemonVolume for <private>
    • <private>: remoteObjectProxyWithErrorHandler error: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=4099 UserInfo={NSDebugDescription=<private>}

    • Sandbox: bluetoothd(96) deny(1) mach-lookup com.apple.server.bluetooth

With the first one (Bolded) being the most logged. What on earth is happening? I have bootcamp

Hide active app icons in dock for Catalina?

    Posted: 01 May 2020 05:49 PM PDT

    Hi,

So I would like to hide active app icons in the dock. Inserting the LSUIElement and setting it true in the info.plist file of the app only works until the computer is restarted. After a restart, the app will then get killed immediately upon launch. A launch from terminal creates the response "zsh: killed [app path file]" I'm guessing it has something to with the code signature no longer matching the package contents?

I also tried running it with "xattr -rd com.apple.quarantine [app path file]" with no luck...

Does anyone have a fix for this?
