Posted: 08 May 2020 09:48 AM PDT Hey everyone! I've been jamming on this for a couple years now, and would love to share it with you and hear your feedback. I messaged mods ahead of time, so I hope talking about this is OK. We all know about the Mac's "Spaces" feature, and - as someone who always has a few different areas of focus - I like to group my related apps across these virtual desktops. CurrentKey Stats lets you assign names to these virtual desktops (the app calls them Rooms) and lets you assign a custom icon for each one, so you always have an instant visual reference of where you are (you can disable that if you want). You can also assign global hotkeys for each Room, so you can move directly to any one without clicking. Because macOS' public APIs are limited, the names stay in the app and don't show up in Mission Control. But they are persistent. Next up, it helps you track how you spend your day across your apps and Spaces, with pretty graphs and stuff. Finally, with its latest update, it adds a means of triggering custom events via AppleScript upon entering/leaving specific Spaces. I wrote about one fun use case here, of giving each Space a custom radio station: https://spencerdailey.com/2020/05/07/how-to-give-each-of-your-macs-spaces-a-custom-sound/ The app is completely free on the App Store and will remain so (it's a labor of love). https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1456226992?pt=119982183&ct=r&mt=8 I would love to hear what you think! Tips for clearing up some extra storage? Posted: 08 May 2020 10:01 PM PDT I unfortunately only have a 128GB Mac mini, and could always use some tips to keep as much storage on there as possible just in case. I try to keep everything as clear as possible and routinely delete old files, apps, etc., but if you guys any other tips it'd be greatly appreciated. [link] [comments]
Posted: 08 May 2020 08:55 PM PDT Again, sorry if this isn't allowed here, but it's a bit of a continuation of my Mac Mini post, and also a slight review for anyone looking for Mac peripherals for cheap. So, as someone who was laid off due to the virus, I've been collecting unemployment. Not the best situation to be in but I literally cannot find another job, I live in a small city and the shutdown crippled a large majority of businesses here. I've been saving most of my money but looking for things on the cheap to keep myself occupied. I picked up a 2.5ghz '09 Mac Mini for cheap, upgraded it with 8gb of RAM and an SSD and installed Mojave. Works great for what I need it for. So, I needed the rest of the setup. I have a relatively small desk so needed to stay smaller, and Walmart is pretty much my only option to get things in person. I already had a small 19" monitor that I eventually want to replace (something the same size but higher def) that I could use just fine with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI. At Walmart I managed to grab both an iHome wireless mouse and an Anker Ultra-Slim keyboard. It was sold near the iPads but was advertised to work with Mac, and was the ONLY keyboard they had that had Mac buttons. They both fit the minimal white aesthetic I was going for and the keyboard sold for $20 and the mouse for $15. I also bought a Blackweb mousepad that had a built in wireless charger for use with my iPhone. So, I didn't have high hopes for the Anker keyboard. I haven't had good experiences with cheap keyboards in the past. But this thing really blew me away at the price point. It's got a nice look that fits right at home with my Mac, it's got a metal finish (not far off from the older Aluminum MacBooks) with white keys, and the keys feel great. Nice amount of travel, not too mushy, nice click to them. Which surprised me, because when they say ultra slim they really mean it. This thing is THIN. But for $20, it fits the look I'm going for and is small enough to fit on my desk comfortably but still be a pleasure to use without feeling too cramped. The mouse was great too, although it feels like every other sub-$20 mouse, I just bought it to match the look I'm going for. All around, I'm very pleased. Maybe not here, but in a lot of Apple circles I'm apart of, be it real life or Facebook, I always hear that you have to shell out for the newest computer and peripherals to have a good experience. And I find that to be not true at all. I'm using a Mac from 2009, that I've upgraded to be more than capable with most basic tasks today, all together paid under $100 for it, and paid another $35 to get a full working setup that feels great to use. Would I pay more? Maybe, if money weren't an option, it'd be nice to try newer hardware. But as it stands? I'm completely satisfied. I'm running (almost) the latest OS (I did test Catalina and it also ran fine), and my computer has little to no lag (on most things). I guess the point of this ramble is to let people know you don't have to pay top dollar to get into the Ecosystem and have a good experience. [link] [comments]
Help! Mac not showing up on network when it's asleep Posted: 08 May 2020 08:27 PM PDT My 2010 Mac Mini running High Sierra (10.13) suddenly stopped being visible on the network by my other machines (MBP's) when it goes to sleep. It does become visible when I tap the power button or when it first boots up. As a result I am unable to mount it from another machine unless I manually wake it first. It was working fine up until the other day. I have rebooted, toggled Wake for Network Access off and on, and I have reset SMC. How can I resolve this? Thanks! [link] [comments]

How to set a backup of mac os finder directories on external drive correctly? Posted: 08 May 2020 12:45 PM PDT Good day. I have an SD card permanently in my MacBook 2015. There I store my photos. I want to store some of them also on my macbook drive. All the photos are organised in a special way (folders, names, etc.). I want to make it so, that when I change something in the folders on SD, the same effect is on macbook drive. If I delete, rename, add or something else on the first drive, the same should happen on the second drive automatically. But of course, if happens something unforeseen to one of the drives (e.g. crash), files on the second drive stay safe. How it can be realized? [link] [comments]
Why does my Time Machine disk use HFS+ instead of APFS? Posted: 08 May 2020 12:37 PM PDT From what I know, APFS is newer and better than HFS+. However, I recently noticed that my Time Machine backup disk is using HFS+. Is there a reason for this, or did I just chose this setting way back when and forget about it? Is it worth changing if so? Can't remove folder on macOS - Directory not empty Posted: 08 May 2020 12:09 PM PDT I have strange problem with removing empty folder on macOS Catalina. Right now I have ended up with new ideas how to remove that thing. This folder is not being used by any application. I have already tried to remove it while starting macOS in rescue mode. Question regarding Catalina battery drainage Posted: 08 May 2020 02:16 PM PDT I just recently upgraded from majove to catalina because I wasnt using my mac at all for the last few weeks/months and without knowing about the battery drain issues I upgraded it. I cant even properly watch youtube on safari on low screen brightness without my battery completely getting drained and it also drains battery when the lid i I tried a fix in terminal I saw in a yt vid but the terminal asked me for a password and it didnt work. Kinda makes me regret getting a mac cuz the main reason was that macos had less issues than windows. Is there a way to fix this or do I have to wait for catalina 10.15.5 for a proper fix? Unlocking Mac mini with Apple Watch never works?!? Posted: 08 May 2020 09:06 AM PDT Just wondering if anyone else has seen this issue and has figured out what to do: I have a 2014 Mac mini and the "Use your Apple Watch to unlock your Mac" feature never works for me. I can see there is some kind of connection with my watch and the mini because I do see the "your watch must be unlocked" message if I have just put on my watch and haven't unlocked it. I also get prompted to double-click the side button when I need to give macOS admin permission, so it sure seems like unlocking the mini should work as well? One thing I read after googling the issue is that in order for things to work properly, the mini must have WiFi turned on. So, even though I'm connected via Ethernet, I turned on WiFi (and yes, Bluetooth is also on). So what's the deal here? What else needs to be done to make this handy feature work for a mini?? TIA for any tips... [link] [comments]

Can I create a folder based on template? Posted: 08 May 2020 01:52 PM PDT I'm a web developer and for each project I like to create a folder with certain files, sub folders and more files. Is there a way to natively or with an app, create such a structure from a template and maybe even adapt based on a few conditions I tell it? I find copying a template folder in Finder pretty inelegant. [link] [comments] |
