    MacBook Pro 2020 fan noise...

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:52 PM PDT

Hi, I recently received the MacBook Pro 2020 13 inch base model, and what I noticed is that the fan has a high pitch sound even when not on high rpm. for example, when I set the fan speed to 3000rpm with Macs fan control, I can hear this high pitch that gets a bit irritating. This wasn't happening on my MacBook Air 2020 that I returned due to cooling issues, I would put the air to 3000-3500 rpm, and the sound of the fan would be smooth and close to silent, even if a bit audible. The MacBook Pro however has this distinct high pitch that doesn't sound right, unless there's a difference between the MacBook pro and air fan? maybe has something to do with being connected to the heat sync in the pro? any ideas? thanks!

How has your space gray MacBook held up over the years?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:22 PM PDT

Asking because I saw some comments saying that space gray is much less durable (anodized color starts wearing off) with time. How has your space gray MacBook held up after many years of usage? Pictures showing the palm rest area would be appreciated!

Is Apple not accepting 2019 Macbook air for tradein?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 09:14 PM PDT

I bought a macbook air like a few weeks before the 2020 macbook air came out. I knew the keyboard was crappy and that there were fan issues, but I still got it. And lo and behold, I am currently facing the same issues. I tried to trade it in, but their online portal keeps telling me that my new (3 month old) macbook is not eligible! Any idea what I can do? I cannot use my current macbook efficiently anymore

    What should I get?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:42 PM PDT

Looking to get rid of my Late 2014 Macbook Air and replace it with a Pro, but I'm tight on money. Should I buy a 2014/15 model with more processing power and storage, or a newer model with just the basics?

I could potentially keep my air and just by a basic iMac but idk if thats a good idea.

I am a musician and use my laptop everyday, usually running multiple softwares and using a lot of data.

Help needed for fixing my broken MacBook Pro!

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:21 PM PDT

Hi there! I was trying to fix something on my MacBook Pro 13(mid 2012) and broke the joint that connects the motherboard to the keyboard cable. I don't know how to get my Mac working again. Could anybody help me please?

The new Macbook air is still not available in my country. Would it be worth it getting an older version?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 11:17 PM PDT

Or should I just wait for the 2020 one?

I have not used a mac before, and this will be my first if ever I purchase.

For anyone thinking about going with the 2019 MBP 13" Refurb (base w/ 256) vs. the new 2020 MBP 13" Entry Level, I received mine on the 6th. Here's my experience over the course of a week. Hope it helps you make your decision.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 05:34 AM PDT

EDIT: I initiated the return with Apple, and purchased the 2020 MBP 13" Base model from Best Buy. I will receive the new one Monday, and I'll be able to spend a little time with both machines before making up my mind. I've certainly seen valid arguments for keeping and returning. Best Buy finally got stock so I'm gonna side-by-side compare... and then send this 2019 back more than likely.

First off, I'm not a Power User, and if you're looking at the base model MBP 13", I am going to assume that you are not either. My use case is pretty simple: web browsing, streaming video on occasion, GarageBand, Evernote for writing, and a little iMovie fun once in a while, but nothing crazy.

I saw the 2020 MBP drop and immediately knew I was about to save $200+ on a 2019 and took the leap - bought from Apple Refurbished store for $1059. This is technically my second MacBook, but since the first was an m3 2015 MacBook 12" that I only kept for 3 days, I'm counting it as my first.

This MacBook is just so very nice to use in almost every way. I have not experienced any lags, stuttering, or force-quits at all. Battery has been great, and the screen is beautiful. BEAUTIFUL. The laptop is beautiful - I get that it's a pretty subjective statement - but it is a gorgeous machine.

I haven't gained an appropriate appreciation for the Touch Bar yet - I assume the more time I spend in GarageBand and editor tools, I may find some enhanced use for it, but as of now, I'd just like to kinda have a physical escape key. Not a deal breaker, just a little thing.

Aaaaand now to the keyboard. I'm sitting here typing on the MacBook butterfly keyboard right now, and in a moment, I will return to my work PC (and my Surface Keyboard) and it's night and day, a different typing experience. If you've never typed on one of these butterfly keyboards before, it's similar to the cloth Magic type covers on iPads (before the new "Magic Keyboard" came out for the iPad Pros, in that there is so little travel that if you're a "heavy-finger" typer, you're going to actually notice a bit of pain from extended typing sessions. That's just physics unfortunately - less travel downward, means more force reverberation upward through your phalanges. Overall, I don't hate it, but I don't love it like every other feature of this laptop, and that's unfortunate, because the keyboard is so pivotal to the experience.

So, I've got another few days to initiate a return if I want one and I'm still considering it, and replacing with the base 2020. The 3-year lifespan of the keyboard warranty concerns me a bit, as I was hoping to keep whatever I bought for 4-5 years, and I know they can't "just replace the keyboard with a new Magic Keyboard" because they're engineered differently (different thickness). I'll update if I send it back.

Mid 2017 MacBook Pro 13 Base (8/128) to 2020 MacBook Pro 13 10th Gen (16/512) Upgrade now or just wait for the 14 inch model?

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:47 PM PDT

Using machine primarily for software development work. My current MacBook does not have enough memory for my needs. 2019 MBP 16" is too big for me.

Only fear with the 14 inch model is that if they introduce new tech, i.e mini-LED, it may have a ton of issues at launch. Seems like the 2020 models have all the kinks ironed out.

Bootcamp MacBook 16inch 2019 - Windows 1909 - Lag when gaming periodically, cursor lags behind about 1-2 seconds, same with graphics lags and then catches up and repeats.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 04:40 PM PDT

    MacBook 16 inch - 5500M 8GB

This happens on all games, once it starts I have to close the game and this immediately fixes the lag. Cursor back to normal etc. Can open the game straight away and it could be fine for hours.

I am using the latest drivers available from here https://www.bootcampdrivers.com

Does anybody else game on bootcamp on their 16inch? Trying to figure out if this problem is with my MacBook or those drivers or something else.

I've checked all windows event logs and there is zero error related to this. Any feedback is appreciated.

MacBook Air stuck on loading screen

Zoom Making the Fans go Bezerk

    Posted: 15 May 2020 03:45 PM PDT

With the global pandemic going on, zoom has become a basic application which we all use. After speaking to a couple of friends who own Macs, we have all had the similar problem of the fans going ham when using the application, or any other video conferencing application. Is it just me, or do you guys have the same problem; if so, do you guys have a quick fix for me.

An amateur 2011 Macbook Pro user, in need of some help. Loud fan.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 08:53 AM PDT

    Hello,

I have had my Macbook for nearly 10 years, I can't believe it! I love this thing! This thing is my saving grace. I use it for work, school and music production on the road. Today, rather, this weekend. Im doing a big back up to save my tooshi in the case something happens to this thing.

My fan, has gotten so loud within the last few months, even on simple tasks of just playing iTunes. or writing a word document. I'm not an expert at all when it comes to computers. If you were to ask me to come up with a fully produced jazz piece or old soul, that's the easy stuff.

Im in need of some help. What can I do to save this thing?
    SPECS:
OS X Yosemite (I was told to not upgrade after this by some dude awhile ago).
    Processor 2.8 Ghz
    Memory 4GB

I'm a frugal guy, I'm going to see if I can get at least one more year out of this thing before I upgrade to another unit. Thanks for reading, peace!

Help: Splotchy static flashed on my screen while gaming via an external hard drive? (MBP 13" 2017 - No touch bar.)

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:58 AM PDT

So, I was running the Sims 4 yesterday from an external hard drive for about an hour or so and everything was fine. Then suddenly random static started flashing across my screen. The static wasn't solid and didn't fill the whole screen. It was large though but kinda spotty - almost shaped like a lightning bolt coming in from the top-mid/left and flashed every 1-2 seconds or so. I started to freak out because I had a horrible time with my old 2011 MBP over the years. (It finally died a very sad and dramatic death in 2018...)

I've only had my 13" for around a year and a half. So, naturally, this flashing static on my "new" MBP had me extremely concerned and I was expecting the worst to happen. I quickly saved my game/quit, ejected my external HD... and the flickering stopped. My mac has been fine since. I feel like this might have something to do with the game causing my MB to overheat or something? Idk. Any ideas or solutions? I don't usually play games. It was my first time playing the Sims in just under a year. Sooo, now I'm terrified to play the game again lol. Thanks!

Note: I'm currently running Mojave 10.14.6. I've been working on some projects and I'm too scared to update my software for fear of it not being compatible with certain apps, etc. Also the external HD I'm using is a My Passport for Mac. Haven't had any issues with it!

Base 2020 MBP W/ EXT. monitor

    Posted: 15 May 2020 10:05 AM PDT

How will the base MBP with 16gb ram perform with an external monitor as opposed to the 10th gen base, I'm aware the 10th gen has dual fans please lmk, as the savings would be good however if it won't perform properly with a monitor I'd spend the extra

    Upgrading from a mid 2009 13" MBP

    Posted: 15 May 2020 07:44 AM PDT

Just wanted to get some opinions about how I should proceed from here. I was all set on buying the rumoured 14" MBP to replace my 2009 so naturally I was a little bummed about the 2020 13" refresh.

Using my MBP for Ableton, light coding and day to day.

    Options I am considering:

    a) Spend ~$200 on keeping my 2009 alive for another year or so, and wait until the fall or next year to see if a better 13/14" model comes out. My 2009 is doing surprisingly okay for its age, but I think I could breathe some life into it with a new battery, SSD and 8GB ram.

    b) Go for the $1799 13" MBP and if/when the 14" comes out, sell it to get that one.

I'm leaning towards the first option given that the supposed 14" would be a perfect option, but I'm also a little wary of spending $200 on my current machine that is already completely obsolete. Any thoughts?

MBP 13 vs MBA Value retention

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:36 PM PDT

    Hello guys,

I'm close to upgrading my windows laptop to either a MBP or MBA (required by my uni). I was doing my research on to choose which way I wanted to go. On thing that struck me as a long time windows user is the value retention of those things.

Anyway, my question was: how do the two laptops compare when it comes to value retention? I would logically believe that the MBP is better in this aspect but I wanted to have the opinion of Mac users before making any decision.

MacBook Pro return during COVID 19

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:32 AM PDT

Hey! I got myself a 16-inch MacBook Pro from Apple Store Eaton Center late March. As I changed my mind and decided to return it for a smaller laptop, I figured all Apple Stores across Canada were shut down indefinitely. I am an international student and I need to return to my country ASAP. However, because of this laptop and the uncertainty as to when Apple Stores will start functioning, I am stuck in Toronto. I cannot afford to keep the laptop either as I have lost my job too. Can someone advise me something on the resolution of my situation?

MacBook Pro 2020 Extra SSD Drives

    Posted: 15 May 2020 01:11 PM PDT

Hey everyone! Super excited to have purchased my first MacBook with the 13", 10th gen, 16 gb RAM, and 1TB of storage specs yesterday! Was thinking about getting the 2TB, because I have a lot of files and photos I'd wanna store throughout the years, but figured I'd start with 1, and get some extra drives down the line. Anyone have any recommendations on which external SSD would be compatible and the easiest to hookup and maintain? Thank you!

My MacBook Pro 2015 won’t turn.

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:54 PM PDT

HELP, so my MacBook Pro 2015 suddenly turned off whilst using it, it was on 80% battery and then when I plugged it in it just kept turning off as soon as a I booted it up. When I unplugged my charger it instantly switched off too. After trying to get it to work by resetting the SMC and stuff it then turned to it being stuck on the charging screen where if I plug a charger in it recognises it's charging but won't boot up it's been on charge for over 2 hours and still won't turn on? Any help will be appreciated as I run my business from this MacBook and can't take it to repair due to coronavirus. I'm thinking it's a battery fault. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks in advance.

    Minimal water damage MacBook Air

    Posted: 15 May 2020 12:23 PM PDT

I spilt a tiny bit of water on only my charging ports of my 2019 MacBook Air. Everything was still functioning except when I plugged it in to the charger initially it would read the charger but after 2 seconds it no longer charged. So I turned it off and sat it on that side for about an hour to let it dry. I also tried to dry it with a tissue a bit. After that hour I hit it with a blow drier and turned it back on and it was charging again like normal. It's currently turned back off and on its side again to make sure it's fine.

But I was wondering if anyone knows if I am actually in the clear with this or if I should be worried about potential future problems.
